A Third of Secret Santa Gifts Get Tossed
Wow, I figured it'd be high, but not a full third. Half say the gifts they get suck, and most return the favor.
Some etiquette expert in the article says to keep it personalized and cheap, and don't give female employees things that could imply "sexual overtones" *cough* BS excuse for harassment lawsuit *cough*. Why not just say that's what it really is lady, some guy tries to be nice, and some greedy co-worker decides to cash in. Am I to assume that honesty isn't part of an etiquette experts repertoire? Blech, I hate people who use stupid crap to cash-in on a lawsuit.
She also thinks baking cookies is an awesome plan, because its cheap, and people love cookies, plus you made them yourself!
How many people know at least one person who think they're awesome at cooking or baking, but they can't fry an egg without screwing it up, yet constantly try and foist their crappy food on you like they're some 5-star chef?
Beyond that, you know there are people who would cheat buy a sheet of Pillsbury prefab cookies, and sure, they might be good, but c'mon! How lame is that?

School Shut Down and Locked Down After .22 Found on Sidewalk
This might have been a bit of an overreaction, but I'm giving it a pass because most schools are so woefully unprepared and lackadaisical about their security. At least we know they're prepared to do this much. But I can tell you this usually isn't the problem.
From my own experience with a school shooting, and from reading about others, below the jump I've written what I believe are the real problems that need addressed to significantly address the problem. I don't want to come off as a know-it-all, or a wannabe know-it-all. I just know that even though it was a small incident where no one died, I had friends and family where it went down. I know what it could have been, and I would have been in no position to stop it, or try to.
I strongly believe that doing the following can sharply reduce the threat that school shootings pose to students. I hope that people I talk to take these into consideration, and work to make their student's schools secure from these tragedies.

Brilliant: Airlines Underfueling Their Planes To Get Priority Landing
Basically what is happening here is, with increased fuel costs, airlines are purposely putting less fuel in their planes, so that air traffic controllers are forced to get the planes on the ground quicker so airlines can cut fuel costs. This is gonna cause a disaster, our major airports are taking on way more traffic than they can handle as is.
Pilots have been forced or pressured by to carry less fuel by their airlines, and a retired pilot has come out and stated that he was pressured by his airline to carry less fuel, he refused, not only because he tried to follow safety regulations, but because of increasing delays at already overburdened airports, which suck up fuel while you wait to take off.
In 2005, only five planes landed with minimum fuel at Newark Airport. This year, seventy-three have had minimum fuel, and another ten were in emergency fuel situations and had to be landed immediately, or else they would have run out of fuel.
Between the story of illegal immigrants with bogus IDs working in sensitive places in O'Hare and airlines now cutting corners on safety regulations, its a recipe for disaster. There needs to be a crackdown on the airlines, the decay of safety and security standards need to be addressed, now!
In the longterm, we need to increase and rebuild our infrastructure. Our airports are taking on way more traffic than they were ever built to handle already, and air travel continues to grow. Our Federal government has done everything but the basic duties it was designed to perform. They are failing to provide basic security, and failing to maintain basic infrastructure, and the costs to our nation will be dire.

Julie Myers Nomination to head ICE Hits Snag
Senator Claire McCaskill put a hold on the nomination when it came out that Myers was one of three judges of a costume contest for a Homeland Security Halloween party in which the winner dressed in dark makeup, dreds and a prison uniform.

How stupid do you have to be to do this at a party associated with a Federal Agency? The fact that she was incompetent enough to let herself get tied to a politically toxic thing like that is reason enough not to give her the position.
The article goes on to say that it wasn't technically blackface, but dark makeup...I guess like C. Thomas Howell in that crappy movie Soul Man. Myers claimed she couldn't see the makeup, but that others had and complained the next day.
There was a picture of her and others with the guy in dreds that was destroyed. McCaskill wants to know why the picture was destroyed, and other details about Myers interaction. McCaskill's not a fan of Myers, as the article makes clear.
The picture probably would let us know if Myers could have seen that it was makeup. The fact that it was destroyed makes it look that way. I wonder if they'll dredge up another copy or another pic. If she's being dishonest, then she deserves the abuse McCaskill's giving her.
Oh, and the guy who wore the costume has been disciplined.

WWI Officer's Recently Published Memoirs Offer Moments of Humor Amongst the Horrors of Trench Warfare
It written by Captain Alexander Stewart, who served in the 3rd Scottish Rifles, its called The Experiences of a Very Unimportant Officer. He served until he was injured in 1917 The article gives a few highlights,
Stewart was haunted by his experiences long after the war, Stewart's son, now in his eighties, recalls that his father would wake up in the middle of the night screaming. Stewart rarely spoke about his time in combat.
I might have to try and track down a copy of this book, it offers a unique perspective on war in that era, and you don't see that published often.
"After my third or fourth shot, I found that the bowl of my pipe and the smoke from it was obscuring my line of vision as I was firing slightly downwards all the time. Much to my annoyance, I had to put my pipe in my pocket alight as it was; it was lucky that it did not burn my jacket."Just as I got my rifle working I saw a man in the trench calmly kneeling down and taking an aim at me. At the moment I saw him he fired. But in a miraculous way he missed."
This is good too.
Describing the injury that ended his military career,In them, he details his annoyance at being woken up by pointless edicts from headquarters asking him how many socks his men have.
"I reply 141 and a half. I then go to sleep; back comes a memo: "please explain at once how you come to be deficient of one sock". I reply "man lost his leg". That's how we make the Huns sit up."
"I started to cough and brought up some blood and a bit of the shell which must have stuck in my wind pipe. My servant very kindly retrieved the bit of iron out of the mud and, handing it to me, remarked that I might like to keep it. This I did and my wife has it now."
He also complained of rodents eating the hair cream out of his hair while he was sleeping.
Stewart's grandson, who is an actor, found the memoirs, and decided to publish them.

Gay Panic?
The Romney campaign was advertising on a popular gay dating/matchmaking/social networking site, and hurriedly had those ads pulled when they realised they were showing up there.
I wonder, was this them pulling the ad because it was a waste of money to advertise there, or because Mitt, who's been putting himself out there as strongly against gay marriage and pro-FMA, doesn't want to have his campaign associated with teh ghey?
It seems to come off more as the latter, and it looks clumsy and bad. He shoulda let them run for a little while, then quietly have them discontinued.
I should note, I'm in the Fred Thompson camp on the gay marriage issue, I'd be in favor of putting up laws or an amendment if necessary to stop judicial fiat, the issue should be voted on in state legislatures for individual states. And on a personal level, I don't care either way.

Good News: 23 Illegals Busted Using Bogus Badges at O'Hare International Airport
Delightful. They had access to fairly sensitive areas too. The illegals were employed by Ideal Staffing Solutions, which appears to have a somewhat shady reputation. They did work for United Airlines, KLM and Qantas. Some employees are facing charges for hiring the illegal workforce. In March, questions started getting raised about company practices by a US Customs and Border agent.

Pat Robertson Unleashes Prayer Assault, Endorses Rudy
I got nothin', I just wanted an excuse to post this picture.
No, actually, I do have something...do people take Pat Robertson seriously? Look, it probably helps in a general sense because it might talk down some of the social cons who are threatening to pull the trigger and go third party or stay home, but people who think this is a big boost to Rudy himself are I think gravely mistaken.
In fact, I'm not sure it helps him with the popular social con movement in a huge way either. These religious endorsements are of limited use, particularly with Protestants, who will simply find new leaders (we Papists know how you guys love to split off to do your own thing).
Beyond that is the undercurrent that people are forgetting and I keep bringing up, and that's the Second Amendment types. Neither Rudy or Mitt are paying proper attention to them and mending fences. They aren't as shrill as the Evangelical leadership, but they probably hold as much or more clout, and you ignore them at your peril. They can and have made and broken candidates, and if you don't believe me, I'll leave you the words of a former President (from the NRA Wiki),

No Good Guys
I had wanted to write about the stupid "Dog the Bounty Hunter threw racial slurs at his kids girlfriend" story, but as the story rolled on, I wanted to do it less and less, because it had become so mindnumbingly retarded I didn't want to wrap my head around it. I reached this stage,
If you're clueless on who the guy is, South Park does a pretty excellent goof on the show here. Its South Park so that's your content warning.
There aren't any good guys in this story. When you first hear the story, you're not surprised the guy uses racial slurs. The guy looks dresses and acts like he tried out to be a pro-wrestler for the WWF in the 80's, didn't make the cut and never quite got over it. He even has the pro-wrestler nickname,
Making his way to the ring, carrying a big fucking can of bear mace, Duane "The Doooooooooog" Chapmaaaan!
Then you actually hear or read the audio, and you end up hating the guy. He whines that his son can't bring his girlfriend there because they use racial slurs at the house and didn't want to have it out there in a way that would hurt their career. Seriously, brah? You simply can't be bothered to not use racial slurs when your kid's girlfriend is around? You don't mean to be racist? Well, lemme help you,
and fucking lazy too!
At this point, I thought the guy was a total dickhead, still do, for that reason. Beyond that, I'm pretty sure there are younger kids in the house, so nothing like leading by example...which leads me to the next point.
His kid is a slimy little bastard too. The kid sold the tape of his father's racist rant for a truckload of money. Apparently the kid is a bit of a junkie and spent time in prison for it. It seems like he's sort of the black sheep of the family, which causes problems, so he sold the tape to get back at his family and make a boatload of cash at the same time. He's as scuzzy as his father.
Then there is the parasitic relationship between the media and "black leadership." They live for stories like this, they overplay them, and feast off of the ratings they build with their self important, self created drama. And I can't stand 'em.
The sad part is it takes away from decent media types, who do exist, and real black leadership who make positive change. You'll never hear about the decent black leadership, because they aren't tools like all the ones who spend all their time shamelessly whoring themselves on TV, but you'll feel their effect, and God bless 'em.
I rarely watch the show anymore because both hosts are fucking dunces, but I've seen some of the shameless, overwrought bullshit I've ever seen on TV watching the first ten minutes of Hannity&Colmes over the past two, three days.
Days of bringing in "black leadership" to discuss the stupid story and the deep rooted impact on race relations or somesuch garbage. WWF superstar Duane "Dog" Chapman pathetically flagellating himself on the show after show to try and salvage his B+list fame and try and convince people he's not a racist. Days of Colmes' mindless squishy rambling, Hannity's stupid anchorman "concerned face."
I'm sick of it, put Dog, his kid, all the media leeches, and the attention whoring "black leadership" who are reveling in this stupid media driven melodrama into a TV studio, lock the doors from the outside, and send up a B-52 with a full payload.

Retard Nannies From AFA: Ban Porn at Military Bases
Its not just liberals that have been afflicted with Nanny State Brainrot.
First off, this Morality Police crap pisses me off, its the conservative wing of the Nanny State. If I'm gonna rip on liberal Nanny Statism, I have to be consistent and rip on conservatives that get banhappy too. And its not that I'm being obligatory to cover my ass, I truly do think this whining for a ban from the AFA is fucking stupid.
Beyond that, they show the same sort of obnoxious paternal authoritarianism that the lefty Nannies do. The AFA obviously knows how to live a soldier's life better than said soldier whos spent the past year or more in the fucking desert getting shot at. Pisses me off, I don't like being told what to do by the Nanny Staters, but there's something about trying to Nanny a person who's putting their ass on the line for you.
With all that said, this isn't the first time this sort of story has come up, and it continues to be as retarded as it was last time. Do these people not realize that nearly every significant military encampment has been followed by a large group of prostitutes? STD's have been a problem for many military forces throughout history.
In fact, the prostitution and sexual debauchery between GIs and British girls was so bad in Britain during WWII, the British government held a series of top level secret meetings they were so worried that it was going to damage the Alliance!

Pisses me off, I don't like being told what to do by the Nanny Staters, but there's something about trying to Nanny a person who's putting their ass on the line for you.
With all that said, this isn't the first time this sort of story has come up, and it continues to be as retarded as it was last time. Do these people not realize that nearly every significant military encampment has been followed by a large group of prostitutes? STD's have been a problem for many military forces throughout history.
In fact, the prostitution and sexual debauchery between GIs and British girls was so bad in Britain during WWII, the British government held a series of top level secret meetings they were so worried that it was going to damage the Alliance!

I don't get the feeling that there is a large prostitution problem in our current campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan, which is a really unique thing, my guess is that a combination of disciplined, professional forces and readily accessible porn is probably a major reason for that.
Let's be honest, short of neutering, you have a choice, either let them have their porn, or they'll seek out prostitutes. I'd rather they flog the bishop and make some magazine pages stick together than make it burn when they take a piss. And really, do you wanna pay for a lifetime supply of Valtrex through the VA because the AFA insisted that the soldiers not be burdened with the liberty to look at what they want in a magazine.

Nice Deb is under Best New Blog, she's facing Jammie Wearing Fool from LGF, so we have some catching up to do, nothing against JWF, but we gotta support our fellow morons. She runs a very good site, much better than mine anyway...well, hers is more professional, she covers real news, plus she doesn't bank on linkwhoring for traffic like me.
While not a moron to my knowledge, I'm calling on everyone to vote for DUmmie FUnnies in Funniest blog, its actually a decent site, the guy picks out a bunch of crazed rantings from Kos DU HuffPo and other assorted lefty crank sites and goofs on them. Most people would go insane with rage reading the stupid shit he reads through on a daily basis. If it'll sweeten the deal, he's up against Sadly, No!, which is way ahead, and who will take the category if we don't vote for DUmmie FUnnies.
Ace is right next to Michelle Malkin for Conservative Blog, you morons are doing good, but you need to do better! Vote, Vote, Vote!
For best GLBT site I'm going with GayPatriot, Average Gay Joe is a moron, but I figure he also writes at GayPatriot anyway, and GayPatriot stands a much better shot at winning. I'm guessing he'd rather be a joint recipient of a win than none.
For best videoblog, I'm going with HotAir. As much as I like MKH, HotAir is the only site that has a shot at beating the assholes at Crooks&Liars, but I am voting MKH for best Video of the Year.
For best Canuckistani Blog, I'm going with Mitchieville, because fellow moron and Anka lightman Retired Geezer has asked us to.

For Best Mideast Blog, there's a few good choices, Totten sometimes drops by AoS on Iraq threads, so I guess he counts as a moron, and it looks like he'll win, and he certainly deserves it. Iraq the Model also deserves some respect and would also deserve a win.
That said, I'm voting for someone else who also deserves to win, I'm voting for Rantings of a Sandmonkey, some of you may not know about Sandmonkey, but he is an Egyptian blogger who's a pro-western libertarian and seems like an all around good guy. If do you know of him its likely because of this, he actually had to quit writing for a few months this spring and summer because the Egyptian government started to follow him around. Things began to get too hot, and he had to lay low for a while, thankfully it appears he's back in the game.
And to give some extra weight to the seriousness of this, lets not forget this was around the time blogger Abdul Kareem was sent to prison in Egypt for criticising Islam and the Egyptian government. Any of those three are great choices and deserve to win, looks like Totten will win, but I'd like to see Sandmonkey move up there, his story deserves to be out there.

I'm voting MVRWC for Top 250 because Beth is a fellow moron, and its a decent site, its probably the smallest site on that category, up against RedState, and a few mid to large-size lefty blogs. * Beth from MVRWC said in the latest AoS votewhore thread to vote for whatever righty blog can win. So do that, I guess.
For Best of the Rest, I'm voting Slublog, he deserves it, he does a good job at AoS and at Slubbo HQ and an all around good guy.

No, Just No!
Today's classic about to be destroyed by clumsy Hollywood types is brought to you by Sylvester Stallone and the classic film Death Wish. Yep, studios want Stallone to remake Death Wish.
This is exactly what people think they do, Hollywood has nothing original to create, so they dip into the vault and try and remake the classics, and they always do a terrible job. Maybe if Hollywood wasn't such a dull, pathetic echo chamber, with the same basic storylines and the obligatory lefty morality message, people might start going to see films again.
All I gotta say is....
Don't even think about it dirtbags, there is only one Paul Kersey, and his name is Charles Bronson.
