I actually got to meet Ray Bradbury at a fundraiser for a local community college's planetarium a few years back. He signed a coffee table book about the artwork associated with his books and the movie adaptations that had been made about them that my brother and I had given to my dad (a huge fan of his work) the year before and even included a little doodle with the signature. I should explain that I meant, "People who are really bad parents" when I wrote, "Just like them", obviously not just Nazis.
So I guess it depends on your definition of "as bad as". My definition is pretty loose, but I still don't think taking kids away for anything except where both parents are also locked up for breaking laws that relate to abusing kids. The recidivism rate for people who beat women or kids or molest or rape kids is high. .
I really don't want the State taking kids. I think that's the worst thing there is and far too easy a process to abuse, as we often see parents losing kids because they come under the eye of the local children's social services.
There is nothing worse to do to parents than take their kids.
If the father was breaking the law, lock his ass up. If he was encouraging the kid to break the law, lock his ass up. But if he was just teaching his kids shit others don't like, well, that's part of what freedom is. You have to allow the edges to go almost all the way to illegality or they tend to shrink too far and/or slide in the wrong direction.
Many places hate home schoolers and would love to have the threat of taking them away to make them go to a school. That already happens occasionally and always makes me see red.
