Personal stuff update

I wanted to give a quick update as to what's going on with the BFF.  The original CT scan showed a mass so she had a biopsy done a few weeks ago.  That biopsy came back showing an irregular mass but no definite sign of cancer.  Since then she's had a bone scan and another CT scan with dye and I think some other test.  She heard today that those scans show no evidence of cancer.

She's still very ill and can't hold down solid food but, right now, all the tests are coming up negative for cancer.  Presumably, the next step is going to be removal of the mass.  She should hear about that either later this week or next week.

Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers and all the rest.  It means more to me than I can possibly express.

That "Reset Button" really worked!

If you missed Cold War cloak-and-dagger skulduggery, the Russians seem to have pressed that button pretty damn hard...

The FBI accuses the SVR, the successor organisation to the Soviet Union's KGB, of running a network of "illegals", described in court documents as Russians who received training in languages, codes and ciphers, invisible writing and counter-surveillance before living in the United States under false identities.

Each of the 10 was charged with conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison on conviction.

They were alleged to have met US government officials given codenames such as "Farmer", "Parrot" and "Cat" as well as engaging such tried and tested espionage methods as dead drops and brush passes.

Hawkins to Frum: Here is why you cannot haz

So The Twat, in his commentary on Weigel, was crying about the fact that he was denied access to the Conservative Blogads Cloud by Hawkins.  He says,

You may say: Well who cares what John Hawkins think? Reasonable point – except that Hawkins is the person entrusted by Google to determine who may join the conservative blogads cloud. (Disclosure: He decided that FrumForum could not participate. We no longer qualified as conservatives because we had criticized other conservatives, particularly Rush Limbaugh.)

The cloud is basically where, if you're promoting conservative sites or wares, or want to promote your goods or services to that audience, you can try and become a part of that package of advertisers through Blogads, and sites can choose an ad package that reflects their content. 

Hawkins administers that cloud, and knew he was going to have to respond to this at some point, and does so effectively here.  Note the, "this may become a story at some point"-type threat from The Twat and his spokesdouche.  John's response was great, as is the whole post, that must have been awesome to smack Frum like that directly.

A simple solution

I'm not sure why this hasn't occurred to anyone yet, but it just popped into my head. We could get President Present focused like a laser on the problem at hand if Congress would just approve a resolution changing the name of the region to the "Golf" of Mexico.

Only one vowel changed and the problem is solved. It's elegant, really.

Up to 1,000 jobs at Bucyrus International Inc. and its suppliers could be in jeopardy as the result of a decision by the U.S. Export-Import Bank, funded by Congress, to deny several hundred million dollars in loan guarantees to a coal-fired power plant and mine in India.

About 300 of those jobs are at the Bucyrus plant in South Milwaukee, where the company has 1,410 employees and its headquarters. The remaining jobs are spread across 13 states, including Illinois, Minnesota and Indiana.

On Thursday, the Export-Import Bank denied financing for Reliance Power Ltd., an Indian power plant company, effectively wiping out about $600 million in coal mining equipment sales for Bucyrus, chief executive Tim Sullivan said.

The fossil fuel project was the first to come before the government-run bank since it adopted a climate-change policy to settle a lawsuit and to meet Obama administration directives.

I was just thinking

In the wake of the Dave Weigel debacle Ezra Klein has decided to kill the JournoList listserv, but we all know it will be back.  maybe we should setup a competing list serv.  I know we aren't journalists or heavy duty right wing pundits but there are at least according to people on Ace of Spades quite a few of those people who visit his site and we get some crossover.  I would do this a little different than Klein however.  First off everyone would be anonymous so that the type of exposure Klein faced couldn't happen to our members.  Second I would scrub the topics so that the type of thing Klein wrote didn't survive.  I am interested in making a point not running people down.

I say I and we but I am only using that as an example of how I would do things, someone with more credibility than myself would need to set things up.  I have no contacts and I have no credibility outside my own deranged fantasies so I am in no position to do anything.

Another thing I would like to set up is a conservative only chat system.

Thoughts from a Ratfucker: The Dave Weigel resignation

Blah.  Well, I did have something long and snarky written out, but my computer did that thing where you hit the backspace and it takes you to the previous screen rather than erasing the last letter you wrote.  Yeah, fuck you, too, Steve Jobs. 

Anyway, long story short: Dave Weigel got fired because the Washington Post had to admit that he was what any thinking person to the right of David Brooks knew all along: he is a liberaltarian, not a conservative.

What's surprising is the reaction of some pretty established bloggers, such as Ed Morrissey, who are lamenting Weigel's, ahem, "resignation."  I understand what Ed is saying about Weigel being a nice guy.  DC is a small town, and I know several people who know him as a friend and would say the same thing.  I also know that most of my friends here are either liberals or just plain leftists.  I think they're nice, but I would not want them writing for WaPo to cover conservatism. 

I think what Ed and others are doing is the blogger version of a Capitol Hill GOPer shielding Democrat Congressman and Senators from criticism from the Right on the grounds that "I know Sen. Feingold. He's a charming fellow and a fine family man."  Yeah, he may be, but that doesn't make him above criticism when he's wrong.  *Sigh*

Also, why should we weep for Weigel?  The Narrative is on his side.  The Left and the MSM (BIRM) will send all of his previous writings criticising the Right down the memory whole.  Weigel will claim his mantle as someone who was really conservative, until those darned teabaggers and Palintards got ahold of the party.  I can just smell the Strange New Respect already...

Weak: FDA officially bans candy cigarettes

Seriously, who was even buying these except adults feeling nostalgic?  I couldn't even find them in stores, and believe me I always kept an eye out for them.  I could find them with online vendors though.  Did they really need to be banned?  I know, I know, it was For The Children^TM.
