When drive-thrus are outlawed, only outlaws will...uhh...

Looks like there's some stupidity brewing up in the Great White North. Thankfully, at least it doesn't have anything to do with banning excerpts from Mark Steyn's books this time:

Calgary should consider banning new drive-thrus, two aldermen say -- a suggestion that received a chilly reception from some drivers Wednesday.

In a city trying to put pedestrians first and cars last, blocking new drive-thrus from being built makes sense, said Ald. Brian Pincott.

"We've got to start designing and building our city for people and drive-thrus are not about people, they're about cars," he said.

Uh, yeah. And the last time I checked, those of us who don't live in Pixar movies understand the fact that people drive those cars. Dumbass.

Of course, anybody with more than a couple of firing neurons can see where this is all coming from:

Ald. Druh Farrell backed the idea.

"We're making huge strides away from our auto focus," she said. "I think we need to look at all sorts of means to reduce our carbon footprint, and this is one of them."

Someone should come up with a drinking game for this sort of thing where whenever someone mentions a "carbon footprint," you chug a bottle of something and then throw that bottle at their head.

Both aldermen said banning new drive-thrus would drop carbon emissions from idling cars that wait in line, while Pincott said it would improve communities by making people talk face-to-face instead of through a speaker.

Right. Because we've all had such deep, life-changing experiences when we walk into a burger joint and talk face-to-face with the person behind the counter. My "Why, I think I will have fries with that" epiphany of 1999 was a real turning point in my life.

If you read the whole thing, you'll find a number of people quoted who don't think this is a good idea, including one who has a rather salient point about people not really wanting to, uh, walk around outside in Calgary nine or so months out of the year, for some reason.

The best way to fight sexual assault is by not really fighting it

Of all the defenses of yesterday's Supreme Court ruling on child rapists and the death penalty, this has to be the most vile:

But the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault, a nonprofit victim advocacy group representing 80 rape crisis centers, applauded the ruling.

"Most child sexual abuse victims are abused by a family member or close family friend," the group said in a statement. "The reality is that child victims and their families don't want to be responsible for sending a grandparent, cousin or long time family friend to death row."

First of all, what kind of advocacy group for victims of sexual assault is in favor of rewarding those who perpetrate sexual assaults? Did it form alongside the American Hunters and Shooters Association?

Secondly, if a "grandparent, cousin, or long time family friend" raped my child they would be lucky to make it to trial.  Any parent that would rather keep an association than seek justice for their child doesn't deserve to be a parent.

The Move America Forward donation drive

This is a donation drive put together by some of the big conservative talk radio hosts and pundits to put together care packages for the military.  Most of you will see this being advertised somewhere, but I thought I'd put up links, you'll be able to watch a live stream of the event being held, and watch the meter here, details on where to donate are at either place if you're interested.

Moron of the Day: Tim Blair

Okay, the story doesn't actually name Tim Blair as the offender but I think we all know it is him:

Police in Australia have charged a man for drink driving in a motorized wheelchair after he was found to be six times over the legal alcohol limit, local media reported on Monday.

Police in the tropical northern Queensland city of Cairns said the man had a blood alcohol reading of 0.31, and was so drunk he was asleep at the controls of his motorized wheelchair in a turning lane of a major highway.

My only consolation is knowing that, because it was Tim Blair, that motherfucker was supercharged.

Update: Heh:

Alaska State Troopers used lights and sirens to apprehend a North Pole man suspected of driving under the influence after he allegedly led them on a slow-speed chase that covered several lawns.

The 20-year-old man was on a riding mower. Sunday's pursuit lasted about 200 feet and reached speeds of up to 5 mph before a trooper got out of a cruiser and told the man to stop.

Troopers received a call early Sunday complaining of an intoxicated man driving a mower. They said Wyatt Lewis's blood-alcohol content was 0.18 percent, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

Chimpy McHitlerburton's cowboy diplomacy claims another victim

This time it is The Littlest Tyrant, Kim Jong-Il:

North Korea has handed over a list of its nuclear programs, clearing the way to be removed from the US terrorism blacklist amid years of efforts to get the North to abandon the atom bomb.

South Korea announced that officials had delivered the dossier to China - the host country for six-nation talks since 2003 that have tried to entice the North into exchanging nuclear weapons for aid and diplomatic concessions.

Naturally, we wouldn't have had to wait this long under an Obama administration.  Had the President Bush been willing to engage in face-to-face, unilateral, and robust diplomatic talks with North Korea, Kim Jong-Il would have handed the nuclear information over to China years ago

Chrysler to fulfill the dreams of bloggers everywhere

Nope, can't see how this could possibly be a bad idea:

The nation's third-largest automaker is set to announce Thursday that it's making wireless Internet an option on all its 2009 models. The mobile hotspot, called UConnect Web, would be the first such technology from any automaker.

Struggling Chrysler is hoping that providing motorists access to the information superhighway will set it apart from competitors and help reverse a dismal year; through May, sales are down 19.3% compared with 2007, the worst drop-off in the industry.
I know some people would welcome this but, speaking for myself, I know that if I had this it would make Billy Joel's driving seem competent by comparison.

Web comic (or something) of the day

Now, I normally don't like this webcomic, as it's too heavy handed in it's liberalism. But this made my day...

Definitely good for McCain, but conservatives can go further

I agree with Vintage here, but I think there's more to be said.  In Vintage's post, he links Hotair, where Allah correctly notes that a lot of social conservatives are going to be pissed about McCain's meeting with the Log Cabin Republicans, and this will probably hurt McCain, politically speaking(I was reading that post too).

This speaks to a fundamental problem, we're beginning to see a rift between small government conservatives and the social conservatives, many want to simply abandon the social conservatives, sometimes out of frustration, sometimes out of animosity or hatred, or personal hurt, many social conservatives want to ditch the small government wing and use the government to protect traditional social views.  Cathartic as it might be, that isn't the answer.  We small government conservatives need to offer an alternate path to social conservatives, and we must do so quickly.

This problem became clear with the rise of Mike Huckabee in the primary this year, those of us that saw Huck for the walking disaster he was managed to stop him from taking the nomination, yeah, we ended up with stupid McCain, but Huck would have been worse, which is horrifying in itself.

Huckabee is still pounding his Christian Democrat message, and he has a solid base of sympathizers and followers.  If you look at that post, you can see how Huckabee slimes small government conservatives and lays waste to several straw men, caricatures of ruthless libertarians and robber barons crushing working people and old folks underfoot.  We know that isn't true, but clearly many people don't, we need to combat this notion, and keep the Christian Democrats from winning the heart of the social conservative movement.

The problem with Huckabee and many other social conservatives is that they're trying to solve social problems largely caused by overreaching government.  In essence, he and those who think like him are trying to cure illnesses by treating the symptoms of an illness, not the root cause.

We have to offer an alternative to social conservatives, and we have to work to convince them that our vision isn't the horror show the Mike Huckabees of the world demagogue and portray it as. We have to explain why it is reducing government power won't create social decay, and will likely reverse it.  How working to allow things like private school vouchers allow them to accomplish what they've tried and failed to accomplish in the courts.  I'm sure you can come up with plenty more examples, but there are a few.

The time to preach the word of small government conservatism is now.

Good for McCain

It seems that Sen. John McCain is going to meet with the president of the Log Cabin Republicans soon.

I think this is bad for John McCain, which is unfortunate, but good for the GOP in general.  There are plenty of gay Republicans out there - moderate ones, libertarian ones, conservative ones, some who don't even agree with gay marriage - and I don't think ignoring that fact is particuarly helpful.

The only thing that bothers me about this is that the LCR, organizationally speaking, tends to be of the thought that the reason the GOP loses elections is because they aren't moderate enough.  But, then again, if we're going to complain about people adehring to that train of thought, we should start with the head of the NRCC, not the Log Cabin Republicans.

A small talk radio annoyance

I appreciate and share Mark Levin's love and support of America's armed forces, but I spending 5-7 minutes of his radio show playing the anthems of each of her branches a bit tedious.

I hope this doesn't cause a suspension in my Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy membership.

They discussed the Alternative Minimum Tax on CNBC this morning.

I think the most surprising aspect of this is that CNBC still exists.

Due to several recent Supreme Court decisions and the anticipated facepalm I'll be doing tomorrow, I've written a poem:

I feel better now.  Feel free to add more creative (and possibly less profane) poems in the comments.

In which I post a 8-month old Charlie Rose video and act like it's news

Last October, Charlie Rose sat down with Gov. Sarah Palin (R-Ak.) and Gov. Janet Napolitano (D-Az.) as part of his "OMG! You have lady parts and you are in charge of something?  How amazingly special!!1!!eleventy!!" series.

I found this interview interesting because they are both mentioned as possible vice presidential picks in their respective parties.   The interview is in the Google Video below the fold, and they appear in the second half of the show after an interview with Cate Blanchett.
