As an example, in Greensboro, NC, teenage mothers are paid $1 a day by the city if they don't get pregnant. That's not a lot of money, but the small incentive is enough to reduce the rate of teenage pregnancy in the town. The cost of the program is, of course, much cheaper than assisting young mothers with new children. (This reward program reminds me of how people will reduce their home electricity bill if they are rewarded with a smiley face on their power bill.) Cass Sunstein, chosen by the President to run the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, approves of this program because of the way it uses psychology to help people make decisions that serve their best interests.
The piece also explores the origins of behavioral economics, which go back to 1955, when Daniel Kahneman was a psychologist in the Israeli army and learned that his test for choosing military officers (seeing which men in a group took charge of a task to lift a telephone pole over a 6-foot wall) didn't work. Data revealed that his test had no correlation at all with how the soldiers actually behaved on the battlefield. Nevertheless, Kahneman's faith in his own judgment was so great that he continued to put soldiers through the test, ignoring the data that showed his test was worthless. Eventually, Kahneman became fascinated by his own "cognitive error" and started studying and cataloging the different ways that people misjudge the world around them. Thus, behavioral economics was born.

So brandishing a special needs infant as a campaign prop was putting your family off-limits? Pushing your own daughter into the klieglights to divert attention from your own fantastic lies is family-protective?St. Andrew doesn't go into specifics, but one might assume that the "fantastic lies" he refers to are the bugfuck crazy conspiracy theories he himself has promoted about that same special-needs infant being, actually, her granddaughter. Andi also does not provide examples (i.e links) of Palin's baby being used as a "campaign prop."
Hopefully, someday, he'll get the care he needs. Unfortunately, I'm not sure ObamaCare covers his kind of dementia. How ironic, huh?

Asserting that the practice of lobbing fish above the heads of patrons and tourists at the market and other venues is disrespectful to creatures that already have gone through a lot, an animal rights group is protesting plans to stage a flying-fish exhibition at an upcoming national veterinarians conference in Seattle.Pointing this out is probably futile, but first of all, they're fish, and—bear with me here—they're already dead. I sort of doubt that respect is much of a priority for a dead halibut.

Although, if you think about it, a couple of them are actually pretty lucky, considering the circumstances (i.e. they lived).
Update: Heh. I didn't see MP's earlier post.

Since I was about 18 I've been loudly saying that I can't wait until the Boomers start dying off so that they'll STFU about Vietnam. So, yeah, I'm tempermentally inclined to agree with that notion.
Which is not to say I agree with Klein's position, it's just that I find it completely and totally point and laugh hilarious that Boomers are pushing for the type of coverage that will result in them being allowed to die off. Yeah. Don't see that happening, really.

I'm going to say I think this is pretty cool. Certainly, that will be a very special moment for the young lady and vastly more valuable than whatever bullshit she'd have been doing on the last day of school.

Sarah Palin destroys the uber metrosexual Matt Lauer.
Hey Matt... Matt... OK Matt I would say that you and anybody else are extremely naive to believe that very convenient excuse of David Letterman's. It took him a couple of days to think of that excuse and 'Uhhh... No, he wasn't talking about my daughter that was there with me at the game, the 14 year-old. He was talking about some other daughter.' Well I think it was a weak excuse and regardless it was a degrading comment about a young woman and I would hope that people would rise up and decide it's not acceptable. Why do young girls have such low self-esteem in America when we think it's funny for a so-called comedien to get away with making a similar remark as he did....
Oh and a message to all of the Kathleen Parker, David Gergen, Powerline, Beltway GOPers:

My previous post left questions about why I'm not a Republican or a Democrat or a Libertarian so I'll answer these in order. Today I'm doing Republican (I'm not sure there's enough bandwidth to explain why I'm not a Democrat... I'll probably just list their platform verbatim).
Oh, I'm going to get some hatemail for this one...

Say this for Obama: he has mastered the Chicago style of politics.
The White House is going ahead with firing Walpin. The firing apparently stems from Walpin's investigation of a non-profit group, St. HOPE Academy, run by Kevin Johnson, the former NBA star who is now mayor of Sacramento, California (and a big Obama supporter). "[Walpin] found that Johnson, a former all-star point guard for the Phoenix Suns, had used AmeriCorps grants to pay volunteers to engage in school-board political activities, run personal errands for Johnson and even wash his car," the AP reports. In April, the U.S. attorney declined to file any criminal charges in the matter and criticized Walpin's investigation. But at the same time Johnson and St. HOPE agreed to repay about half of the $850,000 it had received from AmeriCorps.

Barry has been overheard saying, "That Chavez guy. I like the cut of his jib."
Chavez on Thursday urged executives at Globovision "to reflect" upon the TV channel's tough anti-government stance — or else the station "won't be on the airwaves much longer."
The socialist leader has threatened Globovision before, demanding sanctions against the channel for its alleged violation of broadcast regulations. Chavez told a crowd of his supporters on Thursday that he "doesn't care" if such a decision were to draw international criticism.
Chavez recently called for sanctions against Globovision, and within a week Venezuela's tax agency slapped the network with a $2.3 million fine, prosecutors charged its president in a probe into alleged fraud and lawmakers began investigating the channel for purportedly joining an anti-government conspiracy.
Broadcast regulators also are investigating Globovision for inciting "panic and anxiety" during its coverage of a minor earthquake last month, when station director Alberto Federico Ravell criticized state television for failing to quickly inform its viewers about the severity of the quake.
Free press and rights groups have condemned the investigation. The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists warned against what it called "unwarranted accusations against the press" in Venezuela.
Chavez accused Globovision on Thursday of "poisoning people" and "sowing hate" among Venezuelans. He denied that he's trying to silence critics, telling supporters they "should not allow themselves to be manipulated" by detractors who "accuse the government of persecuting journalists."

Click on that and try not to puke as a bunch of media types (oooh, I'm sorry, that must be the "code words" that they're offended that we're upset against "some Americans" who are "celebrities") try to justify a joke about the daughter of a political opponent getting fucked in front of the crowd at a baseball game.
I don't have kids, but I think I might be offended if one of you fucking pukes suggested that it was okay that one of my daughters was held up to ridicule in front of a national audience.
And, hey, let's just wonder if it was one of Obama's daughters. Or, let's not. Because you fucking cowards would have an entirely different standard, and you know it. Oh, but there wouldn't be jokes there in the first place.
