"I'm surprised that the Dems aren't using the 'promote the general welfare' part from the preamble to say whatever they do with health care is constitutional."
Eric provided links to people like Madison saying, "That's not an omnibus deal, it doesn't mean you can do whatever you want".
Well, looky here. Steny Hoyer, noted Constitutional Scholar and man who's better and smarter than we proles, says,
“Well, in promoting the general welfare the Constitution obviously gives broad authority to Congress to effect that end,†Hoyer said. “The end that we’re trying to effect is to make health care affordable, so I think clearly this is within our constitutional responsibility.â€
I sent that story to Eric and he replied that it was at least a step to the good that they were actually attempting to consider the Constitution.
Me? I think it's the worst thing that could happen.
If they can make that stick, then they can do whatever the hell they claim is for the "common good".
If the Supreme Court can allow John McCain and Russ Feingold restrict political speech, then they'll allow just about anything.
We are so screwed.
I didn't put this in "Funniest End of Civilization Ever" because, while it's darn endy, it's not funny at all.

Over on my blog, I wrote a very long musing about how Andrew Jackson's 1824 post-election strategy relates to Sarah Palin and Barack Obama.
It's probably drivel, but you might enjoy it if you can read all the way through it.
I only tell you here because something like two people read my blog, and both of them live in my house.

I can't wait for you to be a less-than-one-and-done. You walked away from Denver Public Schools, reneging on your promise to stay the course, and now you're walking away from your own constituents.

Who the fuck cares what these fucking losers have to say? Seriously, think about it. All these dolphin fuckers can teach me is how to lose a campaign.
This certainly was a much needed shot in the arm for Republicans. And should be a dire warning sign for Democrats … [Yet moving forward] The smart Republicans {sic-ed.}are looking at it and saying ok, we're not dead yet. But we can't assume that the election of these two Republicans means that the voters think we are right and are embracing Republican principles {if you call being assfistingly retarded as a principle-ed}.
Maybe. Maybe not. But you know what? Fuck you up your fist friendly goatse is what. Maybe the voters aren't embracing GOP Principles, unless you believe that being so fucking stupid you'll fuck up a two car funeral as a principle, but they sure the fuck are turning their back on Obamanomics, Corruption, and The Teh Awesomeness Of Captain Awesome And His Statehouse Puppets. And maybe, just maybe, we can use that as a starting point to convince the voters that NoObama is the way to go. And to hear from two losers who helped lead the failed campaigns of "Get Along" Senate Relics on what we need to do from today on is tiresome and probably counterproductive.
Hey, I admit I have no idea what to do next. But maybe, just maybe running as A FUCKING CONSERVATIVE might not be a bad fucking idea. Just a hunch.

Fuck anybody who votes for this piece of crap.Fuck anybody who tries to help the Democrats, especially Lindsey Graham. Fuck them with the ravaged carcass of the US Economy, because that is all that will be left of it if this legislation passes. all this bill will do is cripple the economy while Manbearpig gets richer and fatter.
The bill approved by the Environment and Public Works Committee will now become one of several initiatives in the Senate aimed at attacking global warming. But they are unlikely to produce legislation that would be voted on by the full Senate until next year at the earliest.
With Republicans boycotting the environment panel's measure, saying more analysis of the legislation was needed, 10 Democrats approved the bill and one Democrat, Senator Max Baucus, voted against it.
Senator John Kerry, who co-authored the bill with fellow Democrat Barbara Boxer, is leading an effort with some Republicans{yeah, like atomic fistee Graham-ed.}and the White House to draft a compromise.
Democrats in Congress, working on a major plank of President Barack Obama's agenda, have been anxious to show at least some progress on enacting a domestic climate change bill before December 7, when an international global warming summit convenes in Copenhagen.
While there were scores of amendments to the bill that environment committee members wanted to debate and vote on before approving it, they were unable to because of the Republican boycott.
Under committee rules, at least two Republicans had to be present to debate and vote on changing the bill.
Boxer delayed work on the legislation for two days, saying she was giving Republicans the opportunity to collect more information from EPA officials and to offer their own amendments.
But Republicans did not take her up on the offer and by Thursday, Boxer had lost patience with the delay.
Oh, and if anybody truly believes that any of this shit will help the planet,. I have a couple of Carbon Credits to sell you.

The Francop, the German-owned vessel seized early Wednesday by the Israel Navy that was carrying weapons destined for Syria and Hizbullah, is the second German-owned ship found carrying Hizbullah-bound arms in the past month.I'm sure Hezbollah was just importing weapons to protect their people from lions and tigers and bears, oh my.
Chancellor Merkel is at least pretending to be outraged about the incident, I suppose we should wait and see if this happens again before we go invading Germany. Oh, wait, the arms themselves are coming out of Iran, so maybe we should invade Iran! Oh, wait, we have a pretty princess for a president who would rather see Israel be exterminated than invade Iran. No, I think I'm being charitable there in overestimating Obama's love for Israel...
Updated with a picture of our pretty princess president.

Them: Two armed active-duty fighters killed by angry bear, possibly over pic-a-nic basket. Two others missing, wounded, and presumed scared.
Us: Ex-soldier kills bear with a freaking log.
Are you absolutely sure you want to continue to screw with us?

Security agencies have long used the canine nose to sniff out contraband like explosives, drugs, human traffic and the like by picking up the scent of criminals’ illegal cargo. Now British scientists are developing two sensor systems that sniff out the criminals themselves by zeroing in on a specific pheromone emitted when humans are in stressful, fearful situations.

Well,
For starters, the guy isn't just vaguely pro-choice like a few GOPers, the guy is rabidly pro-abortion, he's got a 100% rating from the ghouls of NARAL and similar high ratings from Planned Parenthood.
On top of that, he's also a gun-grabber, and has a D rating from the NRA. I remember reading that he was endorsed by the Brady Fascists at one point, so there's another thing. (Actually, I'm seeing elsewhere he now has an F, but I don't have anything solid, if anyone wants to confirm this, that'd be great)
On energy, Kirk voted to allow more refineries, but of course knocked down any efforts to actually tap for more oil and gas, voting to bar drilling in ANWR and offshore.
If Palin does her homework and finds out what Mark Kirk's record is, in particular his ghoulish zeal for abortion, my guess is she won't endorse him. There's being pro-choice, and then there's being 100% rated by NARAL. If Palin is anything, she's pro-life, so I don't think this'll fly. Palin's an active hunter, so my guess is a D-rating from the NRA isn't going to endear him to her either. Then of course, Kirk and those who rejected drilling in ANWR probably denied billions of dollars in revenues to her home state. Let's not forget that Todd Palin worked in oil extraction operations in Alaska up until very recently.
No friggin' way would Palin support this guy if she takes the time to read up on him.

Because Emmerich and his co-writer didn't want to get fatwa'd. (btw if fatwa'd isn't a word it totally should be. Must credit atc)
What's actually interesting is to contrast this with the people who wanted to get their landmarks trashed. Look, I'll admit that I don't really blame Emmerich for taking the less than brave way out. It's an idiotic destroy the world movie. No point in getting all head chopped because of it. On the other hand, this is the kind of self-censorship that's creepy. Really creepy.
Also, I will totally and freely admit that this post is just an excuse to post pics of Amanda Peet. Why? Because she's awesome is why.
Pics below the fold.

WTF?
I have family in Kingston, Ontario. We used to go visit them a lot, I was a smug, superior American icehole whenever I went but they always shut me up when they talked about beer. I had to shut up and admit they were right. Bud in Canada even tastes good.
So I'm torn on this one, on the one hand, I'll be able to stay a smug, rude, annoying American next time I go, on the other hand, Oh Canada, WTF?
Every Olympics the Dutch set up a Holland House at a bunch of venues where they provide tasty suds of the beer variety for thirsty sports fans.
It's all over Holland House, the hospitality event the Netherlands Olympic Committee and the Dutch government want to hold during the 2010 Games. The Dutch have a simple idea, one that has been a roaring success at every Olympics since Barcelona in 1992.
This year? The Canadians said "No, eh".
Canadian bureaucrats want everyone to know they have power. At all the venues they're setting up petty, bureaucratic obstacles and hassles. The article talks about needing permanent plumbing for a 3 week event, not allowing 3,000 people into a hockey arena and this one takes the cake
Finally, there's Ottawa.
It's insisting Dutch organizers must prove no Canadians are losing out jobs to the 330 Dutch citizens coming in to run Holland House. Ottawa wants all the jobs posted for two weeks, to see if Dutch-speaking Canadians might apply.
Unbelievabile. And I thought the Olympics were when the world came together.
Too bad they forgot to bribe the bureaucrats.

The EUnuchs say Italy has to remove crosses from classrooms.
That could be huge for a few reasons.
First, for Italians the Catholic Church is theirs. They own it, they're very casual about their religion, but that's because they've owned the Church for so long. Sure the last two popes weren't Italian, but before that they were Italian for a long time. The last non-Italian pope might have been during the Avignon Papacy (when there were two popes for a while), at least the last non-Italian pope was hundreds of years ago.
They're Catholic and that's that, at mass they'll bring lunch, climb over the pews to chat with friends and are generally very possessive about the Church.
Second, and possibly even more important than the first point, is that they're having problems with Muslim immigrants. They're new immigrants and aren't very assimilated and they're mostly still poor and are the beggars. The French and some other countries just stick their Muslims in ghettos and let them be poor and unassimilated, Italy hasn't gone that route. They're the country most like America in that respect (I think of them as our hillbillly cousins).
When I was there in the 80s, black Africans were a decent sized immigrant class, but they were assimilating and they worked hard. They weren't disliked, they were even liked as they were often the ones selling stuff on the streets the way you can buy stuff in Chinatown in NYC or something. Italians like buying stuff that "fell off the truck", it's in their psyche (the stuff in the Egypt museum in Turin "fell of the truck", Napoleon was transporting his plunder through Italy to France and it was in Turin when he fell so they kept it.)
Muslims aren't learning Italian and they aren't even trying to assimilate. I saw a number of newspaper articles when I was there talking about how Muslims had little loyalty to Italy. There were also stickers all over the place with "Muslim" with the red circle and slash (no Muslims in other words).
Third, Italians already aren't really happy about being part of EUnuchstan, they really don't like the Euro very much, or at least the ones I talked to in 2006 didn't. Pretty much everyone I talked to wanted the Lira back.
Italians are a weird people. They're not into conflict in general, they just want to eat, drink and be merry. But..... I don't think they're as beat down as so many of the other EUnuchstanian people appear to be so I have a feeling this will be huge.
The EUnuchs are telling them to change their whole culture and the Italians will see it as the EUnuchs sticking up for Muslims against them.
The backlash against the EU and Muslims could be huge.
The decision is being appealed, I predict that appeal will fail and I predict that Berlusconi will then tell the EU to go screw and that he'll be viciously attacked in the media (the part he doesn't own) and will become even more popular with the Italian people.
It'll be interesting to see what happens after that. I don't know if they'll revolt against the EU, but I bet a lot that they'll never let them take the crucifixes from their classrooms.
I have to admit, I agree. Italy was like that when the Muslims moved in, if they didn't like the Catholic Church they shouldn't have gone to Italy, they should go where they are willing to be dhimmis.
What the EU does after that will be interesting. They'll do economic stuff against Italy and then it gets interesting. Overreach can be an ugly thing.
