Which of you morons got a liver transplant?

I'm certain he just wanted to make sure it was working OK.  I'd love to see how each of us functions at 0.56 BAC.

Hey Mickey!

I've mentioned before that I've got to hand it to Mickey Kaus for actually running for Senate to make his point. This has brought about comedy gold like his debate of an actual box when Boxer didn't show (I maintain that the box was better). Now? He's listed the jobs he'll take as a bribe to drop out.

Seriously, stuff like this is what will make this story stick.

Taken out of context

The best part of this story isn't the story, it's the comments.

You know, I can't even imagine how many robberies happen per day. But because he did it for something other than money or valuables, he's some nut who deserves to be locked in a mental hopsipal? What about all the other robbers who kill someone in the process? No one was hurt when this happened. The only "Tool" he had on him was a flashlight.

Hey, guess who agrees with Helen Thomas?

Taking a break from donning a Deerstalker cap, grabbing a magnifying glass, and trying to climb up into Sarah Palin's womb, Excitable Andi, in a post titled "Israel Derangement Syndrome" (no link, natch) attacked our staunchest democratic ally in the Middle East yesterday (he apparently doesn't get that the "Derangement Syndrome" thing is meant to refer to someone you support and whose detractors you see as irrationally opposed to—what a surprise), and it's one of the stupidest things he's ever written:

To read Charles Krauthammer today is to enter a twilight zone of an alternate reality. A country permanently occupying and colonizing a neighboring region, and treating its original inhabitants as dangerous interlopers, is the victim.
Okay, where to begin? First of all, Israel isn't "occupying" nor "colonizing" Gaza, permanently or otherwise. Additionally, Israel has pulled out of the West Bank, Sinai, and Lebanon, and who has been the victim since? Innocent Israeli citizens, who have been besieged by rocket attacks by Islamist fanatics.

Moving on, Sullivan continues with the sarcasm (feel the burn!):
An elite commando unit attacking a ship carrying toys and wheelchairs in the hours before dawn are those we should feel pity for.
If all these people were carrying was a bunch of fluffy goodness, why did they insist on docking in Gaza, instead of going to an Israeli port and having their cargo inspected and then trucked in overland, like most other humanitarian shipments to the Hamas-controlled area? Oh, right. I suppose the evil Jews must have wanted to steal all the wheelchairs and toys.

Oh, and I do feel something, though I wouldn't say it was "pity," exactly, for a group of soldiers who were trying to stop a bunch of "humanitarians" who were trying to illegally run a blockade (which is also enforced by Egypt, I might add) and were greeted with a bunch of armed thugs, beating them with pipes and trying to stab them with knives. Seems there might have been a slight miscommunication there, eh, Andrew?
A country with 150 nuclear warheads and the strongest military in its region, the victor in every conventional war it has always fought, is somehow also always fighting for its very existence.
Aaaaaand, here's something interesting. Why mention Israel as the only country with nukes in the region? Sully's native UK (along with France) is one of the only two Western-European powers with nuclear weapons, but I don't recall him ever mentioning that in terms of, say, Ireland. Should my Mick cousins be nervous?

And can you blame the Israelis (this is a rhetorical question for our demented blogger) for having the strongest military in the region when it is surrounded by countries that would like nothing better than to wipe them off the map, not to mention the fact that their founding was necessitated by FUCKING GENOCIDE? A fight for existence is THE VERY FUCKING PURPOSE OF THE NATION.

Sullivan goes on to claim that the late incursion into Gaza resulted in the "hideous murder" of civilians in the name of "the tribe" (got that reference?) and ends with the following:
Something has been wrong here for a very long time, and now it is inescapable. Until the discourse is rescued from the victims of Israel Derangement Syndrome, Israel and America will slowly be drawn into wars they cannot ultimately win, lose every other ally they ever had, and embolden and fortify the very Islamist forces we are seeking to defuse and defeat.
What a triumph of diplomatic thinking! We'll get someone to pretend to like us for now, and the Jews will give up a little bit here and there.

Then, when they've been driven into the sea (or the ovens, again) and a couple of American or Western European cities are smoking, radioactive charnel-craters, hopefully, Andrew Sullivan will be the last homosexual to be hanged or to have a stone wall collapsed upon him.

Fuck you.

Good luck when you get held up at gunpoint someday

I'm sure that whenever that eventually happens, the cops will race to the scene and bust their butts to investigate the crime, never resting until the perp is caught and convicted.

Yeah.

The latest in the world of union thuggery

The SEIU are disrupting Red Cross blood drives because the Red Cross is cutting benefits and raises in response to the down economy.  I've about had enough of the SEIU.

Anyone shocked and outraged by this should remember that Hamas produced this:

And from Heeb, via Agent Bedhead, comes a PR suggestion that, thanks to the general ignorance on the left, would probably have worked just fine.

No. EN-OH. No.

I accept that language is an evolving, complex thing.  Heck, I took some linguistic classes in college.  I'm aware that modern American English is very different from modern British English, which is different from Middle English, which is different from Ye Auld English, which is different from German, which is different from High German, which is different from Low German, and now I'm getting silly.

But I think that's the point.

I'm not a linguist by any stretch of the imagination, but I am a lover of words.  Words like "ever" and "enough" and "ought".  And, while, like any dumbass using the interwebz, I will occassionally use words like, well, interwebz, I also recognize the difference between "ever" and "evah" - as a cultural inflection.

Which is why, to the four dumbasses in DC, I say, "No."

Four peaceful protesters, some dressed in full-length black and yellow bee costumes, represented the American Literacy Council and the London-based Spelling Society and stood outside the Grand Hyatt on Thursday, where the Scripps National Spelling Bee is being held. Their message was short: Simplify the way we spell words.

Roberta Mahoney, 81, a former Fairfax County, Va. elementary school principal, said the current language obstructs 40 percent of the population from learning how to read, write and spell.

"Our alphabet has 425-plus ways of putting words together in illogical ways," Mahoney said.

The protesting cohort distributed pins to willing passers-by with their logo, "Enuf is enuf. Enough is too much."

According to literature distributed by the group, it makes more sense for "fruit" to be spelled as "froot," "slow" should be "slo," and "heifer" — a word spelled correctly during the first oral round of the bee Thursday by Texas competitor Ramesh Ghanta — should be "hefer."

I guess all I have to say to that is - fr srsly?

H/T to my husband's Facechimp page.  I hate it when he beats me to a good story.

Helen Thomas: Israeli Jews should go back to Europe

To the Europe that tried to exterminate them and damn near succeeded, right Helen?  Sick fucking slag, the only reason she's lived so long is because even Death is repulsed by the thought of touching her.

Saved or created

Normally, you'd think that adding 431,000 jobs to our economy in a single month would be reason to jump up and down with joy for the massive upturn in our economy.  It is, after all, about twice the number of jobs that have been added every month since the beginning of the year.

So what's the FAIL?  Only ten percent of those jobs were private sector jobs.  411,000 temps were hired for the census.  Private sector hiring actually dropped from an average of about 200,000 jobs a month to about twenty percent of that.

If Chad's experience that most of those workers have already been laid off holds true for most of the census offices (the ones that aren't inflating their timesheets anyway - if I had a guess, there's some of both Chad's and James O'Keefe's experiences going on) then we're in for some very interesting employment numbers next month.  Especially if we have another month of only hiring 41,000 real workers.

At least they hired the most obnoxious people they could find for census workers. (Chad notwithstanding, of course.  Although he may be insulted to not be included in the most obnoxious.)  I'm sitting at my desk in my home office one day, finally getting down to figuring out a pretty complex issue in some documentation, when the doorbell rings.  I ignore it.  It rings again.  I ignore it again.  Pounding starts on my door, I figure someone's house is on fire so I'd better check it out.  The person at the door was a census worker, asking me if I knew who lived across the fucking street.  And then she wouldn't leave when I told her I don't know their names. (I really don't, I know her first name and I know what kind of work her husband does, and I know they have obnoxious dogs.  And they know I have guns.  That's all we need to know about each other.)  I literally had to start yelling at her to get off my property to get her to go away, and this was well after explaining to her that I was trying to work.

Bravo.

Useful information for the coming zombie apocalypse

A couple weeks ago I was cleaning out an old briefcase and found the sheet we used to use to train sailors on the 6 basic GITMO woulds.  At the time GITMO wasn't a terrorist interment area it was just the Fleet Training Center for the Atlantic Fleet.  Anyway I thought I would share:

Ummm what?

So. Here's this article about high paying low stress jobs.

Let's start with "high paying" meaning apparently $45,000 and up.  If that doesn't say something about the current economic environment, I don't know what does.

Now let's move on to "low stress".  How the hell is being a civil engineer low stress?  If you fuck up, a bridge collapses.  A building falls down.  Things go boom.  Personally, I'd find that a wee bit stressful.

Then there's being a computer engineer.  What the hell universe do the people who wrote the article live in where a computer programmer isn't under high stress?  Hell, some of the big gaming companies got nailed a few years ago about making people work 70+ hours for weeks on end trying to hit deadlines.  Tiny bit stressful.

Sure, neither of those are being cops or soldiers but I wouldn't call either of those low stress.

Gaia's wrath in action

With the rising sea levels, the wrath of Gaia has been threatening to wipe out most of the Pacific Islands for a very, very long time.  It's a terrifying prospect for many proud peoples living in tropical island paradises that may, one day very soon, find themselves underwater - and why?  Because of the greed of the West, and our evil consumption of oil, and our complete lack of compassion for nations less fortunate than we are.

Wait, what was that?

In recent times, the inhabitants of many low-lying Pacific islands have come to fear their homelands being wiped off the map because of rising sea levels.

But this study of 27 islands over the last 60 years suggests that most have remained stable, while some have actually grown.

Using historical photographs and satellite imaging, the geologists found that 80% of the islands had either remained the same or got larger - in some cases, dramatically so.

They say it is due to the build-up of coral debris and sediment, and to land reclamation.

Associate Professor Paul Kench of Auckland University, who took part in the study, says the islands are not in immediate danger of extinction.

"That rather gloomy prognosis for these nations is incorrect," he said.

Oh really?

I am having a little trouble buying into the Big Government census fraud expose

Over that past two days Big Government, the site that brought us the ACORN killing videos last year has taken aim at the US Census Bureau with allegations of rampant fraud and implied allegations of misconduct in hiring and screening practices. That hasn’t been my experience.

I have mentioned before that I am working as an enumerator this census season. It was a temporary job that could fit around a school schedule so I took it, and while it isn’t my dream job, myself and the people on my crew that I have contact with have tried to conduct ourselves professionally.

Most of the issues that Big Government seems to be trying to expose deal with training and pay during training. The training that O’Keefe, and Adeleye received is at odds with that I received.

1. We only received pay for the time we worked plus the travel time to and from training.

2. Our training days went the full 8 hours.

3. As near as I can tell our time sheets are audited. I have had two returned because of questions.

4. All of us were screened before beginning field work. Our first day of training was on a Tuesday, we were fingerprinted, sworn in, and went through all the regular employment rigamarole in the morning and did our first 4 hours of actual training in the afternoon. We were then sent home until the following Monday, at the time we were told it was to allow time to process our fingerprints.

5. The office I work out of is apparently very budget conscious. Half the enumerators in my crew were laid off after about 3 weeks because we were ahead of schedule. They were going to lay us all off but at the last minute decided to keep some of us on in case follow-up interviews were required.

6. This hasn’t come out in videos yet but I’m sure that they are looking for someway to prove that we are careless with personal information. The number one issue in training was protection of, in government speak, PII. Most of a day was devoted to it. We had to sign statements acknowledging that we could be fined our imprisoned if we reveal personal information to unauthorized individuals, and we are required to give a sheet to very respondent that informs them of this.

In short my experiences have been diametrically opposed to those of the Big Government crew. While the census has problems, it’s computer system being one, and is somewhat inefficient it runs much better than I would expect a system utilizing 650,000 temporary part-time employees to run. That is especially true when you consider the complexities of some of the situations. I can’t go into detail but an example would be non-English speakers, there is a system to insure that we can identify and get an appropriate interpreter if we can’t find one in the household. As near as I can tell it works pretty well. The entire system is like that, a little elaborate at time but it works.

Update - I just went back to work for the census.  Well actually I was one of the retained enumerators, but they didn't have any work for us until today. We were meeting in the same place as another crew from the census office that I am working for.  They are also ahead of schedule and have shed about half their people.  So this office at least is serious about staying on schedule and under budget.
