After watching Penn & Teller's Bullshit, I'm forced to ask:  How is it that the same people who believe in holistic medicine and hate corporations believe that everyone should be required to use corporate health care and that people who keep their children out of the hospital for religious reasons should go to jail?  If that wasn't enough contradictions, they apparently DON'T believe people should get cradle to grave health care if, toward the grave end, they are comatose. 

Its almost like they're all crazy.

Laura Manriquez, a nurse with years of community involvement, is making a second attempt at this seat. Manriquez said she’s running because “I know I can lead our community forward.”

Her top priorities are economic growth, education and health care. She said she’d press for local economic development such as light rail and the emergence of Milwaukee as a freshwater hub. She also supports transitioning local industries into the green economy.

She just stopped by my house and seemed like a nice lady.  Still, not exactly my cup o tea.

Angel Sanchez represented the city’s South Side in the Milwaukee Common Council from 2000 to 2004. He owns a home-improvement business and rental properties and has worked as a substitute teacher in the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS).

Sanchez said his three signature issues are education, jobs and health care. He said his experience in MPS has helped him to understand the struggles of teachers and families. To curb classroom disruptions and ease teachers’ workloads, Sanchez would like to change the school day so that it starts at 7:30 a.m. and ends at noon.

Yay, a teacher.  I'm sure he'll be tough on wasteful spending. 

So, you can tell my enthusiasm will be limited.  Except, well, I know who has to lose:

JoCasta Zamarripa is a community outreach coordinator for Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, and has worked for Equality Wisconsin, 9to5, the Southside Organizing Committee and Fair Wisconsin. Zamarripa said she is letting the voters define her signature issues.

So, after reviewing the rest of it, I'd actually have to support Ms. Manriquez.  But boy, oh boy, do I not have any good options.  Of course, in my district, I don't have any good choices until I get to statewide elections. 

Oh, well.  Its the price you pay to live in the city.

Speculative Fiction

I'm sure it's old, but it's new to me.
It's a huge compilation of free stories from various sci-fi authors. Lots of it is from Amazing and Astounding Stories and stuff like that from the 30s, 40s and 50s.
Very cool.

They're the ones who call it "Speculative Fiction". That's always made me laugh.
It's what you call science fiction in polite company. So naturally I always point and laugh when I hear it.
I don't get invited to polite company too much. Odd that.

I forgot where I saw it, I had a comment thread bookmarked from years ago that I clicked, at Sharp as a Marble, I either clicked his blogroll and found the link at that site or found it in his archives.

Bacteria Destroy World-Ending Oil Plume

Why, Its almost like the environment is a giant, stable system that has existed for billions of years without spiraling out of control.

I mean, it would almost have to have some type of self-regulation system or something.  I know, confusing.

I remember a month or two ago I told my father-in-law that this wouldn't even be remembered in ten years as a major disaster because it would have almost zero long-term impact.  He, being the hippie commie type thought I was crazy. 

Well, where's your ecological disaster now?  As Dr. Ian Malcolm said, life finds a way.  We humans really need to stop overestimating our importance to nature.

Such appearances seem unlikely to sway at least one opponent of building an Islamic center so close to Ground Zero at this time -- Judea Pearl, Daniel’s father and a computer science professor at the University of California at Los Angeles.

Pearl told JTA that while he was “touched” by Rauf’s appearance and speech at his son’s memorial, “many Muslim leaders offered their condolences at the time.” More to the point, Pearl said he is discouraged that the Muslim leadership has not followed through on what he hoped would come from his son's death.

“At the time, I truly believed Danny’s murder would be a turning point in the reaction of the civilized world toward terrorism,” said Pearl, who engages in public conversations with Akbar Ahmed, an Islamic studies professor at American University, on behalf of the Daniel Pearl Dialogue for Muslim-Jewish Understanding. The established Muslim leadership in the United States, Pearl said, “has had nine years to build up trust by pro-actively resisting anti-American ideologies of victimhood, anger and entitlement.

Reactions to the mosque project indicate that they were not too successful in this endeavor."

Be careful where you stick your stick

This is a foreboding warning.  Any terrorist group who has half a brain between the lot of them is going to realize in short order that they don't even have to be on a plane to make it go crashy-boom.

Authorities investigating the 2008 crash of Spanair flight 5022 have discovered a central computer system used to monitor technical problems in the aircraft was infected with malware.

An internal report issued by the airline revealed the infected computer failed to detect three technical problems with the aircraft, which if detected, may have prevented the plane from taking off, according to reports in the Spanish newspaper, El Pais.

I shouldn't have to issue this warning in this day and age, but we're still doing HIV education 20 years later, so I suppose it's worth repeating. 

USB drives are cheap.  REALLY cheap.  One of the semi-local electronics stores here sells them in bins by the cash register like candy, without even any pesky plastic casing to wrestle through to use.  Keep a handful of USB drives around, and take somewhat similar precautions to those that you'd take with your naughty bits - if you're sticking your USB drive into unfamiliar or dangerous territory, and you don't have the equivalent of a kryptonite condom's worth of security on your home system, don't risk your wife computer by infecting her with what you picked up from the local slut who's gangbanged the entire town.  Unlike your naughty bits, you can throw out a USB drive without amputation and blood and guts and gore.

I'm going to do you the favor of not hunting down and posting amputation footage from Piranha 3D.

I Am Troubled By This As Well

Troubled that I couldn't help the sunbather out.

The mother had asked the fashion store assistant, identified only as Luisa under Italy's privacy laws, to cover herself up because her large breasts and the act of rubbing cream on them had "troubled her sons aged 14 and 12."

After the court handed down its decision the young woman's lawyer, Gianluca Arrighi, said he had never had any doubt that the accusation of obscene behaviour was without substance.

He pointed out that it was not illegal to sunbathe topless on an Italian beach and said it was not his client's fault if she had an "ample bosom".

Seriously, lady. Quit being a prude. And let your sons savor the beauty that is an ample bosom.

WTF is wrong with Philly, part eleventy billion and two

If any of our PA bloggers weren't previously disincentivized to move to Philadelphia, they will be now.

After dutifully reporting even the smallest profits on their tax filings this year, a number — though no one knows exactly what that number is — of Philadelphia bloggers were dispatched letters informing them that they owe $300 for a privilege license, plus taxes on any profits they made.

Now if we can just find a 7-year-old to blog about her lemonade stand in Philly...

Those of you who have met her and her hump are probably appreciative of it.

A company called Righthaven is purchasing the copyrights to the content in many media outlets and suing bloggers who republish that content.

As DrewM. notes in email: "There's always the chance some of these folks were re-posting whole articles and we've gone through the fair use thing but when people are basically conducting shakedowns they aren't all that particular sometimes."

Mike Lupica, who I thought was mainly a sportswriter, has a column today bitching about Newt Gingrich's opposition to the Ground Zero Mosque, calling him a "scary fanatic" in the title. Fine, whatever. But this line caught my eye:

Gingrich is a Catholic now, by the way, having decided that's not just the best way into heaven for him, but perhaps into the White House as well.

Uhhhh...Mike, I don't know if you've ever bothered to count, but we've had exactly one Catholic president in our 234 year history. You might want to stick to writing about the Yankees.
