The Chicago Way

I really like John Stossel and not just because of the mustache. He's also one of the few reporters who is willing to dig into some less than sexy stories.

A story about a window manufacturing company isn't particularly sexy or fascinating.  But it's these kinds of wink wink nudge nudge deals that people understand.  Look, maybe there's nothing at all improper going on there.  But it certainly looks fishy.

I've mentioned before that there's a huge political corruption scandal that's now over a year old up my way.  Much of it is this kind of stuff.  Company A gets the bid for the new school because Company A gave a little something something to a councilman.  People understand business being slotted to Friends of because that happens on the local level.  Sure, there's some tolerance for this.  I joke that the only reason to run for sewer commission is to get your idiot nephew a job.  But push that far enough and people get ticked.  It's not something impersonal, it's your company and your cousin's company that didn't get that bid because somebody knows somebody.  That's personal.

Again, maybe this is all on the up and up.  That certainly didn't stop the shrieking from the Left about Haliburton and Cheney (pbuh).
