Shocka! Arlen Specter's Support Of Spendulus Hurts Him Back Home

Help us, Ob-Wan Ke-Toomey, you're our only hope.

A look inside the numbers shows the problem for Specter may be even more significant. Fifty-eight percent (58%) of Republican voters in the state are less likely to vote for Specter. Among voters not affiliated with either major party, just 27% are more likely to support the long-time incumbent while 48% are less likely to do so.

These numbers are not surprising given the partisan response to the stimulus bill itself. Nationwide, support for the stimulus legislation increased following President Obama’s nationally televised press conference earlier this week. Still, the legislation is perceived as being what Democrats want rather than a bipartisan product.

In Pennsylvania, 69% of Republicans oppose the package while 73% of Democrats favor it. Those not affiliated with either major party are evenly divided. That partisan divide places Specter in a difficult position. Even though Specter has aligned himself with the president and other Democrats on the stimulus, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has announced that the Pennsylvania Republican is one of their top targets for the 2010 election cycle.

Specter won re-election in 2004 by a 53% to 42% margin. However, he barely survived a conservative primary challenge from then-Congressman Pat Toomey. Even though he had the support of the state’s Republican establishment, Specter was able to defeat Toomey only by two points, 51% to 49%.

1 I just got into a brutal fight on the phone with someone from Specter's office.  Suffice it to say, we had a weeeeee bit of a disagreement as to what he should do.  I was actually talking to a senior staffer and asked him some direct questions about the content of the bill he couldn't answer.  I finally asked if any of the actually *read* the thing since it came out of committee.  That's when it got supremely heated, mainly because I called bullshit on claims they had.  Seriously, no one knows what's in it except possible Heritage and what they're finding is extremely worrisome.

3 Tom Coburn just pointed out in a twit that the bill is 1,071 pages at $737 million a page.

4 Maybe Pennsylvania Republicans will turn out to be more intelligent than their Murtha-supporting counterparts, but I seriously doubt it. Didn't a more conservative Republican run against Spectre in a primary a few years ago, and Spectre received the support of the party and the president?

6 Our state solidified its criminal stupidity by re-electing our borderline corrupt governor Ed Rendell who was out-debated by an ex-football player.

7 Remember when Toomey ran against Specter, George Bush helped Specter.

10 Specter doesn't care what the dumb Pennsylvania voters think. Obama bribed Specter to get his vote on the Financial Destruction package. Specter, who always thought a lot more of himself than was warranted, is going to the Supreme Court to replace Ginsberg, who will resign for reasons of health.
Specter's health  is not good and he, in turn, will resign before the end of Obama's first term, allowing Specter's obit to end with Justice and not Senator.
Democrat Ed Rendell will appoint a solid lefty to replace Specter. Specter, while on the court, will take his orders on key cases, directly from Rahm Emanuel.

11 The Democratic Senatorial Committee and the Republican Senatorial Committee should be targeting Specter in 2010.  Its time for PA Republicans to dump this horse's ass.
