Not to keep picking on Althouse, but she's a repeated practitioner who seems to totally refuse to accept that she was a gullible mark who wanted to believe and conned herself.

Those repeated posts and her comment about how "You can't comprehend $9.7 trillion and if you say you can you're stupid" made me lose most of the respect I had for her. 

Non-math people never realize exactly how ignorant they look when they make declarative statements about mathematical stuff.
Not just mathematicians, but economists, scientists and engineers in every field work with and "grasp" those numbers and greater all the time. At least, the good ones do. Otherwise they'd keep screwing up. If you can't "grasp" 10 or a100 trillion, you can't know if your answer "makes sense" so you'd be less likely to pick up on your mistakes, for instance. "Hmmmm, that should be around 10 trillion germ cells in that culture, not 2, I'd better recheck and see."

I know a guy who's another genius lawyer who is totally sure that lawyers are the smartest people "Anybody who passes the bar is a genius" is a direct, un-blockquoted, quote. He told me that infinity is a discrete number (he didn't know how to use the word "discrete", but that's what he meant) beyond which you can't go.

How do you respond? I tried, but he wouldn't listen, he knew what he knew and that was that.
