Nanny Statism: Conservatives Are Not Immune From The Idiot Disease

The grinding march toward the Nanny State continues, this time in Athens, Alabama.  They are considering a reinstatement of Prohibition in the city, part of a campaign by Christian groups, a mere four years after they voted to end Prohibition in the city.  Businesses are trying to argue from a tax and economic level, which I think is unfortunate.  They should be arguing on the basis of personal rights, and the dangers of setting a precedent for more Nanny Statism.

That said, it has been an economic positive, alcohol sales taxes have increased tax rolls significantly, for both the city and the school system.  Its also caused a growth in the restaurant business because they built in Athens to escape Prohibition.  You'll notice I'm using Prohibition instead of the less charged term 'dry', that's intentional.

I was amazed to learn nearly a third of Alabama is still under Prohibition.  I'm appalled by the fact that Pennsylvania's liquor industry is a government owned operation, but I think I'm even more disgusted by the Nanny Statism on display by Alabama.  Too many religious conservatives fall into this trap, and its gonna damage the conservative movement.
