Mitt's in the tank

The McCain campaign has considered putting Gov. Mitt Romney on the bottom of the ticket. I wonder if they liked what they saw:

While Mitt Romney's set of paid PR minions are busy pushing out Mitt for Vice President spin, McCain campaign insiders say that while it's true they have polled Romney on the bottom of the ticket, the data confirms that such a move would be a political disaster for the party.

"Mitt tanks the ticket," says a McCain insider. "We lose fiscal conservatives. We lose social conservatives. We lose Catholics. We lose evangelicals. All the groups were spending time and money on bringing into the camp would be lost. He just doesn't help us enough to do something like this, as much as Mitt might think we should. He doesn't even win us Massachusetts."
Reached for comment, Sean Hannity said he would continue promoting Romney on his radio show as the best choice for vice president, because he knows the economy and "might" win Michigan.

All kidding aside, my first reaction to this was very foolish.  I got excited.  Then I stepped into McCainWorld.  In McCainWorld, staffers see this polling info and say "See, a conservative like Romney sinks the ticket.  We need a moderate.  A maverick."  So instead of going for someone like Gov. Sarah Palin, they'll go for someone like Gov. Charlie Crist.

1 Romney would be a bad idea, one of McCain's only strong points is that pro-2nd people are nervous as hell about Obama, particularly the NRA, that may be one of the few places of support McCain can get.  Romney is such an idiot about 2nd Amendment issues that choosing him could be damaging.  McCain needs anyone he can who is willing actually spend money to see Obama lose.

With the victory in the Heller decision, the NRA and other groups also smell blood in the water, they know the fascist gun control movement is on the run and damaged, and they may fear an Obama/Democrat win and gain may give the gun control movement a second wind.

2 I don't dismiss the possibility that Mitt could drag down the ticket, but losing fisc-cons? Really?

I'm not necessarily for or against Mitt for VP, but this smells funny to me.

3 The only thing I can think is maybe he's referencing worries about Romneycare.

4 Ha.  You beat me to it, dpud.  That's the first thing that comes to mind when I hear "Romney" and "fiscal conservative" in the same sentence.

5 And I don't even really have anything against Romney on that front.  I just think that, overall, he's a boring, predictable choice.

6 I don't think he does anything for McCain beyond maybe having a CEO onboard helps deflect criticism of McCain's ignorance on economic matters and relaxes concerns from corporate donors.

Romney is a good guy, and I like him, but he isn't a good candidate or campaigner.  He's the kind of guy you want teaching candidates that are solid how to build a machine, organize and raise funds, or doing the organizing himself in the RNC.

The RNC is a mess, this is the same organization that just recognized they were having millions funds embezzled a few months back.  That screams "We're disorganized!  We don't know what the hell we're doing!" to me.  I think Romney could get the organization back into shape and do a damn good job at it.

If there is one thing the guy knows how to do, it's taking something that's an organizational disaster, moving in, taking charge, and cleaning it up.  He did that with the Olympics, he did with the buyouts they did at Bain Capital, and he made some progress on that front in Massachusetts.  They could use that at the RNC in a bad way.

I can't say that I really like Mitt Romney--he ran a poor campaign, and isn't much of a conservative. If McCain is going to pick a running mate to appeal to conservatives, he has a lot of choices that are much better.

8 I agree, Romney has a place in the GOP, it just isn't as VP.

9 I really like DPUD's pitch for Romney for RNC Chair.  That is an absolutely outstanding idea.

10 I've thought that's where he belonged for a while now.

11 "...Romney tanks the ticket..." indeed!  He had unlimited cash, a built-in support-base/money machine, and candidates, toward the end, like Juan and the Huckster. How Romney, of Massachusetts, helps the GOP is a mystery I cannot fathom...

12 Oh, he can help the GOP in a big way, just not as a VP.
