. Now I know that the original was likely an allusion to our relationship with the USSR, sort of making an argument for a soft, lefty let's get along approach with the USSR, so maybe this isn't an obscene stretch, but I find myself at that default position of not mangling a classic by making a crappy remake. Seriously, can we leave the classics alone?

Ya know, as a big enough film geek to actually have a B.A. in it, and my own personal feeling that films can and should be remade to reflect the times if done right, I agree that they should have left this one alone. This was one of my father's favorite movies (he actually laughed when I showed him "Army of Darkness" for the first time and he got the subtle reference to this film in there), and should never, ever be touched. Period. I want to see Hollywood shovel the 12 feet of global warming that I got this year from my front and back yards.

Heh, yeah, we didn't get nearly as much snow as you New Englanders, but we got a few good snowfalls this year. As for remakes...having them done right is such a rare occurrence I generally think they should be left alone.

Well, I'm one of the rare people that actually liked the "Stepford Wives" remake, although I agree there were some holes in it (if you look at the deleted scenes, it does give an explanation that the women were, indeed, supposed to be robots). To me, the remake reflected the times -- women were gaining all the power, while the husbands stood back to let them have their careers. In the original, the husband was upset because the wife had a photography hobby.
And you're right, they are rarely done. But I also think there are only so many stories you can tell. Most end up becoming variations on themselves. The "Psycho" remake was just unnecessary.

Oh, and when I read your post to my husband last night and told him the title, he started laughing and said, "Yup, that pretty much sums up my feelings on it, too."

The
Parent Trap remake with Lindsay Lohan was actually pretty good. I liked its fidelity to the original version with Hayley Mills, and I get a kick out of all the little nods to the original (for example, the golddigger from the first one appears as the mother of the golddigger in the second one). Only thing wrong with the remake is that the girls' mother is too wimpy. You can't believe she ever raised her voice, much less chucked a hairdryer at anyone. Now, Maureen O'Hara? Oh, yeah. She'd definitely clock you if you pissed her off.
Also, I personally think that
Move Over, Darling is better than
My Favorite Wife, of which it is a remake.

Oh, I personally love it when they remake movies and make them to fit their prejudices, nothing loses money like a movie that some Hollywood nitwit thinks is "IMPORTANT!!!" and that makes me laugh.
Besides, as long as they don't remake "The Last Remake of Beau Geste" I'll be fine.

I gotta dis- agree with Scoop about the Stepford Wives remake, probably IMHO, the worst movie ever made, ever.
Made no sense whatsoever, robots, not robots, WTF?
I wanted to throw my shoe through the TV when it was over.
2nd worst movie? Sliver.

Thats why I conceded to the fact that there was that one aspect of it that was confusing if watching the original cut, and that the deleted scenes explains it better. If they left it in, it wouldn't have been so confusing, especially since in the original they WERE robots.
Funny thing is, in my unfinished screenplay (that I still intend on working on -- it's in second draft now) the beginning of the film has the lead character discuss the merits of remakes in relation to "The Stepford Wives" before discussing the remake of "Night of the Living Dead".

I think Al Gore was miscast...or maybe not, he hasn't been nearly as robotic since he went nuts after the 2000 election.
