I'ts simple. Buckley identifies far more with elitism than he does with any particular political philosophy. This is true for many of the 'top columnists', and is why Obama goes out of his way to pay attention to them (Parker on the plane, Brooks' phone calls, etc).
Obama knows well that a truly free press is anathema to a socialist society, and is working hard to further co-opt the press into being part of the elite establishment. He's clearly gunning for the French model of the press, and is (of course) meeting zero resistance from the MSM.

Our choice, last fall, was between an angry 73 year old with a legislative record far from consistently conservative, who nominated as his running mate a know-nothing religious extremist; on the other side was an appealing, thoughtful man who--for a brief shining moment--seemed to be more than the sum of his ideological parts.
#1 - He's still hung up on Palin. "religious extremist"? on what grounds? (No points against Biden for being mentally retarded?)
#2 - He is still willfully blind to all the warning signs. ("Does Barack Obama have any friends who aren't communists?") At no point was there any real reason to believe BO wasn't an extreme leftist.
