But of fucking course

There are no words. Seriously, since I'm a racist if I say anything negative about this, there really are no words. I mean, what could I possibly say?

I guess *sigh* is more of a sound than a word.

1 He won it for not being Bush.

I find it fitting, I would love to build a hall of Nobel winners with a smiling pic of Yassir Arafat with bloody hands in the entranceway.

Besides, how's he going to be like St. Jimmeh if he doesn't win one?

It's also fitting in that it's now, officially a joke. Especially since his contribution to peace has been......uhhhhh...... nothing.
In fact, I expect a bunch of serious wars next year to make it even more perfect.

2 What happens to world peace if Iran gets nukes on Obama's watch. will they take the medal back?

Posted by: johnnosk at October 09, 2009 06:56 AM (OZ/mN)

3 The Nobel Committee hates Teh Joos too, obviously.

Posted by: Alice H at October 09, 2009 07:06 AM (qJHYy)

4 They awarded him the medal for "hope"?

HOPE?!? Have they seen what Obama's Hope has done for Israel's security, Poland's security, South Korea's security, average Iranians and Hondurans' security? Have they seen what his Hope has done in Afghanistan? Have they seen what his Hope has done to our greatest ally, Britain?

Sheesh. If Carter winning it, not in the 80s/90s for his (misguided) work in the Middle East/Election Monitoring/House Building but while Bush was in office, didn't prove what a joke this whole deal was/is, then awarding a sitting President who is less than a year into his first year in office the award (for no concrete accomplishments) proves what a partisan joke it is.

What's next, Ahmedinnerjacket getting one next year? Zelaya? Zombie Castro?

Posted by: eddiebear at October 09, 2009 07:17 AM (vzcc2)

5 A fraudulent award, for a fraudulent President.

How .. symbolic.

6 Althouse for the win. She notes the question isn't why he won the Nobel, it's why didn't he get the Olympics.

The story of Barack Obama is the story of winning things when he hasn't yet done enough to deserve them. He is, quite simply, Barack Obama. We understand that. Why didn't the IOC understand? You could see it in that smile on his face, when he concluded his little speech in Copenhagen, that he bore the sublime knowledge he would acquire the Olympics for Chicago. Because he is Barack Obama, the man to whom grand prizes are given.

Last Friday, it was so disconcerting. It just didn't make sense. Chicago is out?! Chicago is out?! And now, things feel right again.

Posted by: Veeshir at October 09, 2009 07:33 AM (QbT7Z)

7 The deadline for Nobel Prize nominations was February 1.  Obama took office, what, ten years before that?  Oh,wait, no, it was TEN DAYS before that.

The short list is decided in March.  So by that point, Obama had announced the closure of Guantanamo Bay, reinstated foreign abortion funding, let Biden announce that we were going to have open talks with Iran, taken his first vacation at Camp David, and sent Hillary Clinton to overcharge things with Russia and tell Israel that they couldn't even have natural population growth within their settlements.

Notice a fucking theme?

Posted by: Alice H at October 09, 2009 07:58 AM (qJHYy)

8 From the citation:
For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman.

In light of their previous awards to Arafat and Carter, I think we can determine their ideas of international policy and attitudes.

Posted by: Alice H at October 09, 2009 08:12 AM (qJHYy)

9 And another interesting note - no Nobel prizes were awarded from 1939-1943, the 1944 award was given to the Red Cross, and no awards after that were given to anyone associated with ending WWII.

Posted by: Alice H at October 09, 2009 08:18 AM (qJHYy)

10 Oh, and I forgot Cordell fucking Hull - father of the UN, who advised Roosevelt to send Jews seeking asylum back to Europe during the Holocaust.

Nope, no theme here!

I forgot to add that Manbearpig had been awarded the Peace Prize as well.

**MASSIVE BLACK HELICOPTER ALERT**

I know the submissions were made a while ago, so this was always a fait accompli to have another laurel bestowed upon Teh Won, but how much of this happened as a salve to his bruised ego for the Olympics?

Okay, this might be my favorite link on this.

I exited Hotmail after sending a very important, bacon-related email when I saw a story about this on their page.

They had a poll asking whether he deserved it.

Right now it's 62% "No, he has no significant accomplishments".

The comments are a hoot too

What an insult to the likes of the Dali Lama and TRUE peace advocates! Its a political decision, period.

And

Really?!! Maybe he should thank GW for this...since everything else during his tenure has been attributed to him!

The hits just keep coming.

Reading Hot Air we see this link to the Wash Post and this quote

Woodrow Wilson was awarded the prize in 1919, after helping to found the League of Nations and shaping the Treaty of Versailles;

So I'm gonna say that by that metric Obama deserves the prize.

He hasn't created a useless internationaly body full of dictators, but he does suck up to one.

The Treaty of Versailles was one of the worst ideas in the last century (and that's saying something) that helped lead to WWII.

So Obama's sucking up to the UN and setting the stage for a huge, world-wide conflagration surely looks to be right in line with Woodrow Wilson's naive foreign policy.

14 So, yeah, wake up, read this morning's news, and "Yeah, they gave Obama the Nobel Peace Prize"  Me:  WTF?  I go to a few other sites, sure enough, they gave the goof a Nobel Prize.  I just laughed.  Why the fuck not?

Posted by: doubleplusundead at October 09, 2009 09:44 AM (Kk9wi)

15 Can we throw this in the face of anyone who says he's only been in office a short time, what do you expect him to have accomplished by now?

Posted by: Alice H at October 09, 2009 09:47 AM (qJHYy)

16 Everyone gets a trophy!

Ought to make up those cheap award ribbons with Nobel Peace Prize on them, and start handing them out to everyone.

I guess I now really do believe in a world cabal of evil, or the Illuminati, or grays, or moth-man, or shadow people, or somethin'; this is like Coast-to-Coast AM come true. No more jokes about 2012 for me, let me tell you.

Sigh.

19 It'd be funny if the joke wasn't on us. This isn't the first time the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to a murderer or a cheerleader for global government. The latter is why he got the prize, really, being a lacky for the UN and traitorous to the US. Congratulations! I'm so fed up with this mans undermining of the Constitution and lies, Paul Watson was right when he wrote Obama is more deserving of an oscar than a Nobel Peace Prize. I can only imagine his acceptance speech now. I found a fun game to relieve the stress of hypocrisy of the whole situation, fittingly it's built around the plot of Obama tossing the Constitution and replacing it with a global government - the reason why he got his Nobel! Just google "2011: Obama's Coup Fails"

21 Nice pic Dubya.

I am a little depressed, I had what I thought was an original idea and when I went to find an image of Kanye so he could interrupt Obama, I found this page.
Chock full of all the ideas that I thought of and a bunch I didn't.
Well played.

23 Man, I miss W.

I hope he's well.  Not that we'd hear about it unless he wasn't.

24 I don't know if I miss Bush all that much. Toward the end he was mostly screwing with me.
I do miss his professionalism.

He understood what it meant to be President of the United States.

Posted by: Veeshir at October 09, 2009 02:00 PM (brT3o)

25 Veeshir, I echo all those sentiments.  It was more an expression of exasperation at the inadequacy of Barack than the adequacy of George.

Kinda the opposite of the reason Ogabe won the Peace Prize.

Posted by: leoncaruthers at October 09, 2009 02:07 PM (PH0UW)

26 Yeah, he's cheapening the presidency.
It's funny, after Clinton's WalMart presidency (everything's on sale and no class) I didn't think that was possible.

30 Gee thanks.

I was this close (I'm holding my thumb right next to my forefinger) to true enlightenment and you shot it all to hell.

Oh well, back to being an asshole.

That's what I get for being in a car all day, not listening to the radio because my daughter would freak out.  I finally unpack in my hotel and spend twenty minutes getting the fucking internet to work only to find out that Nobel Prizes are the equivilent of candy.

My head fucking hurts.
