D-Day Piper Bill Millin Dead at 88

You might remember the bagpipe scenes from The Longest Day...yeah, Millin was that guy.  Not Hollywood BS, Millin was a real guy, and he really did play the bagpipes during Normandy.  Even though playing the pipes had pretty much been barred from frontline action since WWI, Millin's commanding officer ordered him to play anyway in order to boost morale, and Millin complied.




You have to admire a guy who'd march unarmed onto Sword Beach, playing away on loud bagpipes while Jerry's shooting at you and lobbing mortars and shells your way.
