55 years ago today...

Julius and Elthel Rosenberg were executed for passing the secrets of the atomic bomb to Communist Russia.  Yes, that was back in the good ol' days when we actually prosecuted, convicted, and executed people who were guilty of treason.  Sadly, we now hold multiculturalism so highly that it usurps the Constitution, making treason just another quaint, old-fashioned law like not allowing women to wear pants

Above:  The Rosenbergs prepare for a meeting with V.I. Lenin.

From what I hear, The Rosenberg File is the definitive source for information on the traitorous duo.  As much as I would like to, I have yet to read it.  (I am horrible at reading non-fiction historical books.  Witness by Whittaker Chambers has been on my bookshelf for about 2-3 years now just waiting for me to become an adult and read big kid books.)  The authors set out to write a defense of the Rosenbergs, and found that the evidence just didn't support it.

Apocalypse Worsens

Flooding in the Midwest is now officially the worst in decades:

the Mississippi River – raging at all-time flood highs or near them – devoured thousands of acres of prime farmland. At least nine levees were overrun Wednesday alone and more than 20 in recent days.

From the air, the river looks like a churning sea, swallowing acres and acres of farmland while sweeping over levees and pounding them into submersion. Only the tops of some farmhouses and trees are visible in the worst-hit areas, where the water is already at least 10 feet deep and getting deeper every minute.

At least 19 Illinois counties were declared disaster areas and some 1,100 National Guard troops were on the front lines fighting the floods.

Across the river in Missouri, at least seven levees broke Wednesday between St. Louis and the border, creating havoc in small towns and shutting down roads.

In Washington, the White House and a bipartisan group in the House reached agreement on a war-funding bill that also would provide $2.6 billion in additional disaster aid to replenish accounts already being tapped to deal with the terrible flooding across the Midwest, The Associated Press reported.

Probably ever.  I hope you're all excited for $5.00 bread because that's where we're headed.

To emphasize, this has never happened.  Worse, the rain still isn't totally done.  Four of the next ten days call for thunderstorms in Wisconsin.  I'm sure the forecast is similar all the way up the river basin.

This will definitely get worse before it gets better.  Good thing I'm in Colorado.  I hope my apartment is there when I get back.

The mask slips

Our socialism...let us show you it:

House Democrats responded to President's Bush's call for Congress to lift the moratorium on offshore drilling. This was at an on-camera press conference fed back live.

Among other things, the Democrats called for the government to own refineries so it could better control the flow of the oil supply.

Oh, yeah. That's a fantastic idea. Witness the economic genius, in particular, of Maurice Hinchey (D-Hugo Chavez):
We (the government) should own the refineries. Then we can control how much gets out into the market.
With these people in charge, we are well and truly fucked. Way to go, "permanent GOP majority."

Heh.

OMG SCANDALOUS

A very special parade.

*smack*

More human rights abuses from Yemen, so when does the UN Human Rights Commission or whatever the fuck it's called now pass their next resolution to condemn Israel, instead of condemning this shit?

Funneh.

Eep.

I'M OFFENDED!

Okay, that is pretty good, though Protein Wisdom has had some good ones too.

Presented without context

Barnacles are known as the John Holmes of the invertebrate world with penises reaching up to 10 times their body size. Not all barnacles are equally endowed though. To make the situation more complicated, barnacles are hermaphrodites.
Damn.  Who knew marine biology was so sordid?

Obama plans to neglect his key constituency

Via Drudge (no link yet):

NYT THURSDAY: Obama aides increasingly limiting access for reporters; controlling settings Obama is photographed or filmed... Developing...
What the hell?  What parallel universe is this 'tard living in where he thinks he is getting such horrible press coverage that he has to limit the press?

Update:  Here is the story Drudge linked, although not from the NYT for some reason.

One year of moronblogging and an announcement

It's been one year since I started this moronblog, and I think I've done alright, managed to pull in 100,000 hits within a year, and I think the quality of the site (if you can call it that) has increased vastly, exponentially so with Vinty, MP, Sean and bmac on board.

That said, I do have an announcement as well, I've decided to bring more co-bloggers on, and I've invited Plebian at Daily Dollop to co-blog at doubleplusundead.  I may have one more big surprise contributor, but after that, doubleplusundead will probably be considered a full house, contributor-wise.

Since we're on the subject of changing things up a bit, I've known about this place for a good while, but this is Ace's new site, or will be when the transition is finished.  He's sending people over there now because AoS is fucked up again, so consider this a Moronosphere PSA.

Oh, and most important, thanks to all you morons for continuing to read my crappy blog.

Angry Obama Supporters Storm WSJ Offices

A protest by angry Barack Obama supporters erupted into violence this morning as demonstrators stormed the offices of The Wall Street Journal and overturned two cars in the street.  Riot police were on hand but unable to prevent the damage.  No arrests have yet been reported.

The protestors, organized by the Guardian Council of the Organization for the Reverential Election of Obama (OREO), were demonstrating against the Journal for its continuing practice of running a drawing of Barack Obama instead of a photograph of the candidate, which is forbidden under OREO law.

Claim: Kos Obama birth certification forged

I guess this story has come back from the dead, Brian linked a Townhall blogger's argument that the certificate Kos posted was bogus, or at least suspect, and Ace has since picked it up.  I'm not ready to call the certificate bogus until I see someone post a Hawaiian certificate to offer a full comparison, and really, a nice gif like this would help.  I'm crap with Paint even, so I'm going to hold off on making a judgment on whether this thing is bogus or not until I see further evidence to suggest it is.  Would be funny if Kos Rathered himself, though.

It was probably less painful than high school

Getting shot, that is:

A Philadelphia teen was rushed to the hospital after being shot just minutes after his high school graduation commencement concluded.

The shooting happened outside the Liacouras Center on the campus of Temple University in North Philadelphia at about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday. Shots rang out while family and friends were gathering to congratulate the graduates from Strawberry Mansion High School.

Police said two rival groups at the school were involved in an altercation outside when an unknown gunman fired two shots into the crowd.
Wait?  I thought that the only way young people in George W. Bush's Amerikkka got killed was by joining the military to fight in an illegal war?  Turns out they can get shot at home just as easily, so long as they're living in cities run top-to-bottom by anti-gun Democrats.

Vegas brothels fall on hard times

...not so hard times, maybe?  Anyway, both Vegas casinos and the brothels on the outskirts of Vegas are seeing both their revenues drop, though Vegas' drop is much less pronounced, going from about $615 million to about $515 in casino revenues from December to March. The Nevada Brothel Owners' Association says their business may have dropped as much as 45%

Seems gas prices are a big cause of that, truckers are a major source of business for brothels (truckers seek services from prostitutes?  GTFO!), and the cost of diesel is leaving them with a little less extra money.  I do think as the cost of fuel continues to be high, places like Vegas, that rely heavily on tourist money are going to feel some serious pain.  Wonder if Harry Reid will decide we indeed can drill our way out of our oil shortages if Vegas starts hurting in a big enough way?

I guess this kills all my web-based monkey store plans...

Let it not be said that Congress doesn't understand the needs and concerns of everyday Americans.  With the price of fuel reaching record highs, the House of Representatives has finally taken some decisive action...to ban the interstate sale of pet monkeys:

House members on Tuesday turned a debate on a low-profile bill on pet monkeys into another round in the debate over how to address the price of gasoline.

The bill (HR 2964) would ban the interstate sale or trade of monkeys, chimpanzees and other non-human primates. The House passed it, 302-96, but not before GOP lawmakers argued that the Democratic majority had misplaced priorities.

Not only did Republicans think the bill was unnecessary, but they said floor time would be better spent discussing how to lower gas prices.

“Maybe we should actually spend more time with human primate energy issues, rather than the non-human primate non-issue,” said Rob Bishop, R-Utah. Other GOP lawmakers made similar comments.
The bill had the support of 96 Republicans, including new conservative standard-bearer Rep. Tom Davis (Va.), kleptocrat Rep. Don Young (Ak.), and NRCC Chairman Rep. Tom Cole.

Remember back in 2002-2003 when people were talking about a permanent Republican majority?  Ahhh, those were the days.

Obama wants minorities behind him...just not...err...behind him

Just another bold move by the Obama campaign to prevent right-wing, Clinton-supporting bloggers like Larry Johnson from spreading any more unwanted rumors, I'm sure:

Two Muslim women were prohibited from sitting behind the podium at Barack Obama’s Monday rally in Detroit, apparently so their headscarves would not appear in photographs with him, according to a report Wednesday in the Politico.com.

The Washington-based Web site reported that Obama campaign volunteers said the women could not wear the hijabs behind the candidate, though they gave different reasons for the rule.

One volunteer said that one of the women could not be seen on TV with Obama “because of the political climate and what’s going on in the world and what’s going on with Muslim Americans,” according to the Muslim woman’s friend.

The Detroit metro area has a large Muslim population loyal to the Democratic Party, and that having at least one Muslim woman behind Obama would just represent the area more accurately.  They've got a meme and, dammit, they've got to run with it!

(And yes, I do know that the campaign has already apologized.  But I am still outraged!  OUTRAGED!)

The Birds: Home Edition

In addition to squawking lousing and flinging food everywhere, birds have another charming little habit. They want to kill you:

A Corpus Christi, Texas, man died and his daughter spent weeks in the hospital because of a diseased cockatiel bought from a PetSmart store, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday by the man's family.

Joe De La Garza, 63, died of psittacosis, also known as parrot disease and parrot fever, KRIS 6 News reported. It is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium chlamydophila psittaci and can be passed from numerous bird species to humans.

De La Garza's family told KRIS 6 News that De La Garza's daughter Amanda bought the cockatiel from PetSmart on Sept. 30, 2006. Less than a month later in October, De La Garza died. Amanda was sickened and fell into a coma. She spent weeks in the hospital and has since recovered.
Reached for comment, presumptive Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama said: "It is the failed parrot murder policy of Dick Cheney, George W. Bush, and errr...ummm....I'm glad you're excited to be here in Pine Bluff!...okay...yeah...Halliburton that has been distracting us from giving art therapy to intersexual Hispanics."

Questions For Any Lawyers Out There

Be afraid....be very afraid.

Howard Weyers tried the "carrot" approach by giving his employees incentives and encouragement to quit smoking. But when that didn't work, he resorted to the stick. A big stick.

Weyers, owner of a health care benefits administrator in Lansing, Mich., gave his 200 employees an ultimatum in 2004: Quit smoking in 15 months or lose your job. He refused to hire smokers. Ultimately, he extended his smoking ban to employees' spouses and monitored compliance through mandatory random blood testing.

Spouses, and blood testing.

Question: How the fuck can an employer mandate you to control the actions of your spouse?

What if you had a bad day, had a few drinks and got crazy and had a smoke, and got "randomly" blood tested the next day, resulting in being fired for engaging in perfectly legal behavior?

Would signing a paper agreeing to those terms allow the employer to have any unconstitutional rules they want? Do they get to own you because you get a paycheck from them?

If so, couldn't they require you sign a paper that you'll vote Democrat or lose your job? Or that you have to blow a horse every third Tuesday? Or that your spouse has to blow a horse every third Tuesday?

Why aren't people suing the living shit out of this company?

How the fuck can this fly? My head is gonna explode.

Hmmmmmm...

Sarah Desrosiers, the owner of a British hair salon, had a job opening for a junior stylist. She interviewed one particular young lady for the position, decided she wasn't right for the job, and now she's being forced to pay the applicant, with whom she figures she spent a total of about ten minutes during that job interview, £4,000.

Here's a bit of Sarah's story, with one or two teensy little details redacted or omitted:

For a year, Sarah has been facing financial ruin, due to a compensation claim for £34,000 brought by [the applicant], 19, who has maintained she is due that figure after being turned down for a job at the Wedge salon in London's King's Cross.

In the event, the tribunal ruled this week that while [the applicant's] claim of direct discrimination failed, her claim for indirect discrimination had succeeded.

Sarah has therefore been ordered to pay £4,000 compensation by way of 'injury to feelings'.

Although this is a smaller sum than she'd feared she might have to hand over, Sarah, 32, is still outraged.

'I am a small business and the bottom line is that this is not a woman who worked for me,' says Sarah.

'She is simply someone I met for a job interview, who, for a host of reasons, was not right for the job. I cannot see how she deserves £4,000.

'As for the notion that I've injured her feelings - well, people's feelings get injured every day. I dread to think the sorts of things that people will try to claim injured feelings for now that this precedent has been set.'
Wanna go ahead and take a wild guess as to what the applicant's claims of discrimination and injured feelings stemmed from? You'll be shocked, utterly shocked, I tell you! Oh, and no fair peeking at the link to the story before making your guess!

This could be fun!

You know, I agree with Vinty that if we're going to have to economize on what we use from AP stories, we'd better find the most important news nuggets we can in the fewest words.

That said, I was shocked by a quote from Obama adviser Richard Clarke which I found in this article:

"I'm[...]disgusted by[...]Americans."
Pretty scathing, huh? I wonder, what could have possibly driven Clarke to such naked hatred of his own countrymen?
