The problem is not so much that Zinn's leftist garbage is used in schools, its just not given any context, particularly in high school, most don't learn about historiography, that there are different interpretations of history, different philosophies and schools of thought, and that Howard Zinn's interpretation of history isn't the only interpretation of that history, and isn't necessarily the correct one, either.
If schools are going to use books like this, they need to offer multiple interpretations of the history being written about, or make it clear that Zinn's interpretation of history is not the only one, and to not necessarily take it as God's truth.

We need to learn where we went wrong in 2008, and see why we're still getting it wrong. Conservatives have no reason to jump on board the Straight Talk Express right now, none. I'm absolutely stunned by the number of people who are doing so, if not fully jumping on board, then at least softening their rhetoric.
It makes no sense for us to do so, Sun-Dub the Strategerist has things absolutely correct, we have no reason to give McCain what he wants right now, we get nothing by doing so, we're better off stringing him along and trying to, God forbid, make concessions to his own side, using the threat of not showing up to polls to get some concessions. I haven't decided what to do, but for those who are willing to eat the turd sandwich, why not try and at least score some condiments?
Beyond that, Sun-Dub the Strategerist also has this right, McCain's speech today is pandering crap, and people are way too willing to accept it. McCain's still got a legion of amnesty supporters and other assorted RINOs around him, when we see Juan Hernandez and a few other shady guys thrown the hell out of of his campaign, that might be a sufficient show of goodwill for us not to dismiss him out of hand. But the willingness of conservatives to accept his bullshit platitudes remind me of the Chinpokomon episode of South Park.

For those of us who can't bring themselves to vote for McCain, this is the kind of project we can promote and support, and should, if we aren't gonna devote ourselves to promoting a presidential candidate this year. We can still fight and win without compromising on principles.
His opponent is a very well entrenched Democrat, and was one of the few who actually made a gain by winning a seat during Reagan's 49 state blowout. Its generally considered a safe seat, let's see if we can change that. Even if we can't take the seat, maybe we can force the Democrats hand and force them to drop resources on a seat they thought they had a lock on. They might win big this year, but we shouldn't make it easy for them.
He's only announced today (primaries are late April here, so its not late), so his machinery isn't together yet, but its pretty obvious he's gonna be relying heavily on grassroots support from conservatives. I'll have updates as he gets things in gear.

CPAC’s attendees are overwhelmingly very young — college kids and others in their early 20s. Coulter is undeniably appealing to that group. Indeed, her red meat, bomb throwing style would have been much more appealing to me twenty years ago.
Not so much, Coulter doesn't appeal to me at all. She should pretty much relegated to useful idiot status, far as I'm concerned. When she has something coherent to say, use it to further the conservative cause, when she starts spouting teh crazee, ignore her and try and keep her quiet.

Look, I'm a huge political junkie and try and stay involved, but this is just obnoxious. Good grief people, let your little kid just be a damn kid. Parents are putting their yoots in political themed shirts and dragging them to demonstrations on a regular basis.
Values are important, I'm not about to say kids shouldn't be taught values, but this goes beyond teaching values, this is using young kids as a political tool, and cheating them out of a childhood. Have we really reached the point where we're gonna propagandize our kids on this level the second they leave the womb?
It's getting a little too close to Hitlerjugend territory for me. When they reach their teenage years, sure, talk about politics, but the woman in the story has been forcing her kid to wear propaganda and dragging him to lots of demonstrations since he was three! And you'll note, I don't mention that she's a raging leftist, because I'm sure there are conservatives who do the same damn thing, this is douchebaggery on a bipartisan level.
I'll say this though, for those that are turned off about the increasingly cutthroat political climate now? Get ready, because when we get a generation of kids who have spent their whole lives being propagandized at this level and beyond, partisan politics of today may look like, well, child's play.

The big breakthrough in this research was discovered by accident, normally creating carbon nanotubes is very time-consuming because carbon atoms usually doesn't form in a neat pattern when they bond. One of the researchers noticed that there was a patch of carbon atoms that were bonding together in a neat fashion, and researchers successfully found a way to replicate the effect, making nanotube production much easier, and it has many different potential applications. Northrop Grumman is looking into it for possible use in military communications systems.

Given that the National Guard is the only part of our government that got anything right during Katrina, this is obviously concerning, because FEMA is obviously a mess and the local and state groups are kind of a crapshoot, but probably not close to prepared for an emergency of that magnitude.
"We looked at their plans. They're totally unacceptable," said commission chairman Arnold Punaro, a retired Marine Corps major general.
"You couldn't move a Girl Scout unit with the kind of planning they're doing," Punaro said of plans drafted by U.S. Northern Command, the part of the military responsible for homeland defense.
The commission states that the military has not spent enough time planning for an internal attack, the problem continues to be in part bureaucratic drag, there are conflicts between state and federal governments about authority. Beyond that, when responding to an internal disaster of that level, it would primarily fall under the responsibility of the National Guard, and the Guard has generally been built up as a supplement to locals, not as a leader, as it would almost have to be during that level of disaster.
The article also notes that the Guard and Reserve are being used more actively in theater now, and there needs to be adjustments made to the way they function.
Beyond all that, we ought to look beyond how the Pentagon and our government respond to this level of crisis, what about our response? We certainly don't need to be paranoid, but this ought to be a warning to us, our government isn't necessarily prepared for a disaster, so it may be worth investing some time into learning some basic disaster preparation skills. I don't mean some crazed paramilitary survivalist who lives in the most desolate parts of Montana either, but at least enough to evacuate on your own and survive a few days on your own until things stabilize.
