Philadelphia wins again: Philly considering sinking USS Olympia to create a reef or scrapping it

The title of course being a reference to the phrase Africa Wins Again.  Anyway, the Olympia was an armored cruiser built in the late 1800's, Olympia played an active role in our seizing the Philippines from the Spanish in the Spanish-American War, and is the last American warship still afloat from that war.

Olympia was Commodore Dewey's flagship during the Battle of Manila Bay, in which US Naval forces launched a devastating attack on the Spanish fleet in the Pacific, inflicting devastating losses on the Spanish Pacific fleet and a coastal battery, the US Asiatic Fleet only suffered one fatality during the battle, the Chief Engineer of the USS McCulloch's heart gave out during the battle.  Due to Dewey's actions at Manila Bay, he was promoted to the rank of Admiral of the Navy, a rank that only Dewey has held.

After the Spanish-American War, Olympia was an active training ship and was used to bring the Unknown Soldier of WWI back home.  She was decommissioned in 1922.  So, they're looking for a benefactor now.  You can't tell me that between the residents of the greater Philly area, Navy history geeks, Navy vets and their families, the state and Feds and wealthy donors, they can't scrounge up the $20 million to do the needed repairs.

Heart of stone redux

So. A Mass. Dem who voted against an amendment prohibiting illegal immigrants from getting welfare and other state benefits got violently rear-ended by a v v drunk suspected illegal immigrant.  Did you see the part about the guy laughing off the charges?  And how he can't get reported to ICE since Mass is a sanctuary state?

Here. Have a musical tribute to this.

Jenny McCarthy: Call your office.

It appears that the doctor responsible for that bullshit autism from vaccination claims is such a shitty doctor he's not allowed to practice in England anymore.

I'd say we should ban Jenny from practicing in America but with her career, that hardly seems necessary.

Blind squirrel. Nut. Etc.

Whether or not he means it, Obama issued a statement today fully backing up South Korea's response to the ship sinking. This includes the following:

U.S. support for South Korea’s defense is unequivocal, and the President has directed his military commanders to coordinate closely with their Republic of Korea counterparts to ensure readiness and to deter future aggression.  We will build on an already strong foundation of excellent cooperation between our militaries and explore further enhancements to our joint posture on the Peninsula as part of our ongoing dialogue.

That's pretty harsh in diplospeak.  As one of the commentators put it, we're one illegal ship movement by North Korea from a nuclear war. (Business Insider I think)  Of course I think this will go nuclear, it's not like Kim Jong Il is sane.

Hey, I'll give Obama credit, he's at least saying the things that need to be said.  That's more than I thought would take place.  It's a bit terrifying to think why he'd be saying this.  There must be more intel out there that demonstrates the need for aggressive, public statements.

Things just got more endy than funny again.  Oh.  Yay.

(Random note - I saw the news articles on this, went to get the official WH link to the statement, didn't see it and the page updated with the statement just as I went to do a search.  That was a bit creepy)

My DVR hates me

Okay, so how the fuck did it decide that recording the first hour of the LOST series finale was something that it didn't want to do, even though I expressly programmed it to record THE WHOLE MOTHERFUCKING EPISODE?!!!!!

Now, I have to wait until ABC decides to put the episode up on their website to see what I missed.

And pardon me for wanting to enjoy the first hour of the most watched series finale in A FUCKING DECADE without buffering.

Fuck you, DVR.  Fuck. You.

Ninjas!

I can't help but think that if these were real ninjas, the muggers wouldn't have escaped, though.

Stupid question time

Can someone explain to me the difference between prisoner and hostage?  For instance, do we exchanges prisoners for other prisoners, or is that something we only do with hostages?

And just a bit of theoretical fancifulness - if John Bolton's moustache were the Secretary of State instead of Overcharge Clinton, would I be asking that question at all?

Presented without context

"I thought I’d see that on the Lower East Side. I think that’s fabulous!" he said. "It’s a beautiful penis." The Post reporter wonders if this is appropriate for children's eye level. "It’s New York. Kids have seen worse," the stylist says.
Of course they have. In New York, kids are exposed to hideous penises almost every day.

Are You There, Gaia? It's Me, Algore

I should not be surprised that the left would want to hide and block any references to how awful their plans would be and are for this country. But this really set me off.

And here is my take and message to the left:

Friday afternoon WTF

I missed Draw Mohammed Day yesterday thanks to accidentally chlorine gassing myself just a little bit, so we're going to pretend that this picture is my contribution since it's just bizarre enough that I wanted to blog about it anyway:

Here's the link to the Ebay auction.  I have two comments about it.

   1. I never would have thought to describe this as "romantic", and
   2. Thank heavens this is not a used item.

Oh, and no, this isn't what I was looking for on Ebay when I found it.

Things Trey Grayson wouldn't have done, pt. 1

Part 1 of a continuing series, to be sure.  Rand Paul has canceled his planned appearance on Meet the Press, something that usually gives a candidate who's actually a good candidate tons of free, positive exposure (see Rubio, Marco), because he's had a "long week."

Jackass. And I'd like to thank Erick Erickson, Sen. Jim DeMint, and all the other people who endorsed Paul over a perfectly qualified candidate, whose only sin was serving the people of Kentucky.

Actual homophobia

Malawi gay couple sentenced to 14 years hard labor for being gay.

What's the reaction?  The UK, Malawi's largest donor, expressed dismay but isn't cutting any aid.  The US thinks this is a step backwards in human rights.  Amnesty is campaigning to get them freed.

I have yet to see any major celebrity call the entire country homophobes.  I did see this on the Logo twitter feed so there's at least one queercentric business (and Logo is a business never forget that) who was appalled.  I haven't heard much of anything from what's known as Gay, Inc. though, honestly, that could be because I stopped paying attention to HRC et al years ago.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but I think people sometimes forget that there are portions of the world where it is actively dangerous for me to take a breath just because of who I want to bang.

Why on earth would anyone think there's a problem with the Mexican border?

I mean. It's not like there are Mexican pirates on a Texas lake or anything.

Okay, let's get the snark out of the way first - Chuck Norris would roundhouse kick the boat right out from under them.  Let's send the Australian ninjas over to settle the pirates v. ninjas controversy once and for all.  One Ranger, one riot, one Skidoo.

Now that that's out of the way, pirates. On a Texas lake.  With machine guns.  Why the HELL have they not been shot dead?  Seriously, where are the Rangers?  Where is the police protection?  Since this is a cross border excursion, where are the Feds?

This is an all out assault on American citizens by those from another country.  Hell, yes, I want mortar rounds shot at them.

h/t commenter over at Head Moron's in the Euro thread.  (sorry closed the tab and can't remember who)

Well, there's this, and then there's also this.

I guess Hope for a different tone and Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes in out politics mean different things to different people.

DMD

Here's a really offensive one.

Remember when the other kids would tease you and you'd react so they kept doing it because it was just so damned fun to fuck with you?

Think about it.

Australian ninjas save the day

There is so much win here that I don't know if the universe can handle it.  First off - bad guys are foiled, which is always a win.  Secondly, bad guys are foiled by actual ninjas, which is beyond win.

Three muggers in Australia got the fright of their lives when their attack was interrupted by five black-clad ninja warriors.

[...]

"These guys have turned around and seen five ninjas in black ninja uniforms running towards them. They just bolted."

The victim suffered minor injuries, and the men stole his mobile phone and iPod, according to police.

Mr Soto said the man could have escaped the assault with some training in ninjitsu - a Japanese martial art. As for the attackers, "They just picked the wrong spot," he added.

Hahahahaha! Hah. Hah. Ahem.

I can't even pretend to sum this up any better than Deceiver did.  Read the whole article, but here's a taste of some awesomesauce for ya:

On Monday, President Obama signed the Daniel Pearl Freedom of the Press Act, a measure that gives the federal government an oversight role in tracking international press freedom issues. He then promptly refused to take questions from the press.

Posts like this one are why Deceiver continues to be a guilty pleasure.

You'd think I would be laughing at this

But, actually, I'm not. BP is using Kevin Costner's invention to try to clean up the oil spill.  I don't pretend to understand if this really is stupid or not but here's the thing.  First, the headline is designed to make you laugh at Costner.  If you read more, you find out that this is a long term project for Costner and his brother, who appears to have some kind of scientific background.  Why the hell can't an actor invent something?  Seriously, why not?  Just because he's an actor doesn't mean he's right.  It also doesn't mean he's wrong.  Also, they've been at this since Valdez in 1989 and the first license for this thing was issued in 1993 so it's not like he's jumping on this right now.

Second, I did not know that Costner's blown $40 million of his own money on various enviro things.  You know what?  We're always bitching about the environuts lecturing The Little People on what we have to do while they go jetting around (I'm looking at you Gore).  It appears that Costner's actually putting his money where his mouth is.  Good for him.

I still think he's an enormous tool.  But I'm not automatically going to mock this.  If it works?  Good!
