Parent FAIL

I don't even know where to start with all the levels of stupidity on this one.

Police believe [the three year old girl] mixed up the semi-automatic with a gun controller for the Nintendo Wii, which looks similar and which she had learned how to use from playing on the games system.

Douglas Cronberger, 32, the gun's owner, said he had forgotten he had left the gun out after he took it from its cabinet when he went to investigate a suspected prowler on Sunday evening.

I'm having a hard time believing this was an accident - teach your toddler that a plastic-but-somewhat-realistic-looking weapon is harmless, teach your kid that it's OK to point it at her own chest and fire, then leave out a real, loaded weapon.  I'd joke that it's weapons-grade stupid, but that'd be beyond poor taste.

1 1.  All the Wii guns I've seen are white and are pretty distinctive.  Guns tend to be either black or silver.
2.  Never in my life have I pointed a Wii gun, or even controller, at myself.
3.  Flame away, but three is probably too young for a kid to be using any kind of gun, whether it be Wii, Nerf, water pistol, or firearm.

2 No flaming from here on point 3, Wolfwood - neither of my kids got to play with toy guns at that age.  Not that a three year old boy won't still make a gun out of anything he can find, but there's a difference between allowing and encouraging.  And as soon as my son was old enough (my daughter's not quite there yet) he got the SERIOUS lecture about not touching the guns.  A three year old just doesn't know how to make that kind of differentiation.

Wii doesn't make a black gun AFAIK, but there are other companies that do (example - note that it claims an 'authentic feel').

3 I don't know why anyone would flame for thinking 3 is too young to be playing with a toy gun.

Yeah, at three they couldn't handle the recoil of a real gun, so you shouldn't encourage them to use simulated hand-held weapons.  A mortar is much safer at that age, plus putting the round in the tube aids hand-eye coordination.
