Republicans will lose many seats in Congress due to right-wing paranoia about the Census and refusal to fill out census forms, gloats the liberal web site Daily Kos.

 

The number of Congressional districts a state gets is based on how many of its citizens return completed census forms. Because voters in conservative states are completing and returning census forms at lower rates than voters in liberal states, conservative states will lose many seats in the House of Representatives that they would otherwise gain due to increases in their population.

The good news is this will keep Glenn Beck employed crying about progressivism for the next 10 years. Or maybe people will actually figure out that decisions have consequences, and instead of acting like spoiled children they will fill out the forms.

(I know there are some here who have expressed reservations about filling out their census form. Sorry if I insulted you but again fill out the damn form.)

Update: I was surfing around to a few other sites that showed up in Google for this subject and followed a link over to Free Republic where the discussion was all about only answering the "required" questions and speculation that it won't matter after November anyway because the GOP will be back in power and that will neutralize the census. Both of those assertions are wrong. The Constitution lets Congress pretty much ask anything they want:

The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct.

and election of a GOP majority doesn't invalidate the census. First off, the first election it effects is 2012. Secondly there is an apportionment formula for figuring out how many reps a state gets. After that the districts themselves are drawn by the states not congress.

I went to Catholic grade school and one of my friends was Jewish. He never stood out except he had to tell us about Passover every year.
He went there because it was a good school (seriously, believe it or not but I used to know how to use punctuation properly) and the only reason I knew he was Jewish was because he told me. It made no difference to any of us. He was just Gerard.
He kicked my ass once and that's how we became friends, I took my beating like a man.
He went to Catholic School and even used to go to Mass with the rest of us, he just didn't take any Sacraments.

Contrast him with these jerks going to Trinity University, an expressly Methodist Presbyterian University..

I am deeply deeply disturbed

Some fool has composed a list of the 10 worst science fiction book series and he included the 10 volume L. Ron Hubbard classic Mission Earth on it.

How could he?  written by the master of science fiction himself this series had it all.  Intergalactic intrigue, love, war, hot women in leather, mind control helmets, penis enlargement surgery (wait, what?) drug addiction (??), lesbian B&D fetishists who are converted to heterosexuality by the love (read raped by) of a good man (???), and a plot by the American Psychological Association to seize control of the Earth (????). 

Hmmm, reading those last few maybe I should reconsider my position that this truly was the greatest SF masterpiece of all time. 

Actually what deeply disturbs me is that this is only number 3 on the list.  It should be the number one worst series of all time.  Actually they should invent a new form of math to truly describe it's suckiness.  But the author of the list only rated it number 3, after the Foundation trilogy (which while not great and definitely overrated ) certainly didn't suck that bad, and the Legend of Dune series which I have never even seen. 

Someone should think about revoking his book reviewer license.

Say, what if Riverside County started deporting all criminal illegal aliens?

Scam or just stupid?

Via the Puppy Blender we see this Forbes article on the runaway Toyota Pious from last week.

He talks about how the guy claimed he reached down to try to pull up the pedal but was afraid to take his hands off the wheel to shift into neutral.... errr... was afraid the car would flip if he shifted into neutral.

He also mentions another setting on the Pious, you can shift into "B" and it slows the car down to help your brakes, it's for going downhills.

He links to a Car and Driver article on how to stop your car when the accelerator sticks.
Funnily enough you apply the brakes and your car stops. I know, counter-intuitive.
They did it with a Pious and it stopped fairly quickly. They even tried a supercharged Mustang and it still stopped with the gas all the way down.
It took a long time (903 feet), but it stopped.

Now I was skeptical from the start, the story was a little much, the details looked stupid so it looked to me like scam or his attempt at his 15-minutes.

Back in around '03 or '04 a French restaurant opened in Crystal City (part of Arlington) maybe a week or two after the House voted on "Freedom Fries".
At the time, that part of Crystal City was full of the Patent office and lots of military personnel.

I've always held that up as a Great Moment in Bad Timing (stolen from Mad Magazine circa 1980).

Yeah, there's an exception to every rule

I consider myself more or less a First Amendment absolutist. The State cannot limit what I can say. Period.

But. Yeah. I have exceptions.

The Westboro freaks can go fuck themselves.

Actually, my position isn't that inconsistent.  The State cannot stop me from saying what I want.  But that doesn't mean that I can say anything I want with no consequences.  Of *course* those utter fucktards (apologies to the fucking retarded for the comparison) intended to cause emotional distress.  That's the entire point of their acting up.  That they are being held liable for that speech is in no way a state action limiting their speech.  This is a private cause of action being brought by a private person for indignities directed to his family specifically.  This is distinguishable from, say, the Code Pink rally puppetheads because those protests are directed towards either a.  some entity such as the US or b.  a political figure.  The protests aren't against Cheney in his individual capacity but against Cheney as VP and as representative of US policy.

The Westboro "protests" are directed at the most solemn occasions of private families.  Being a soldier should not place one into the same position as a politician.  The soldier enforces state policy.  The soldier does not create that policy.  If Westboro wants to speak, it should be prepared to pay the price.

So.  Were I on the Court the opinion would be consist of the following "The Court hereby reverses and reinstates the award to plaintiff.  The Westboro defendants, individually and in their association, can DIAF."
