Sadly, there are a few out there

So, was out of state for the weekend, during my drive out I stopped for gas, a soda and to take a leak at a gas station, the place had one or two small tables and you could buy sandwiches there.

Anyway, heading to the bathroom to take a leak, been driving for a few hours and had to seriously friggin' go, and there's two guys sitting eating lunch. One's got a paper open and, poking the paper with his finger and ranting to the other guy, "Look at these fuckin' idiots running our country, and don't even get me started on that fuckin' (says loudly) N*GGER in the White House!"  No, I didn't light into him for his racist douchebaggery, I had other, more important things to do, like take a piss. Here's the thing, though, this guy sounded EXACTLY like Nick the shopkeeper in Falling Down

It took everything, and I mean everything I had not to stop, lean over the table, point to my head and evoke Nick's "Think about it!" verbal tic.

If you're unfamiliar with Falling Down, it's worth renting or sitting and watching if it's on TV, here are the relevant scenes, if you need a refresher,

1 There are a LOT of them.  I think most of them are just people raised in a way that allowed the use of that term as a perjorative without being directly racist (yes, it's possible)  I think those verbal ticks should be corrected, but there is a difference between poor upbringing and being a racist.

When I was in Oki, the term "Dink" was so commonplace, that even I found myself using it sometimes, even though I essentially lived in town with a japanese girl, shopping at japanese stores (when I didn't feel like making a run back to base) and visiting with my friends, some of whom were japanese to plan out our weekends.

The ubiquitous use of the term made it acceptable in a sarcastic sense, I don't think anyone used it aggressively, just sort of a sarcastic jab at someone else, like how I would call one of my best friends (who is part jewish) "scorch" or how that same friend would call me (I'm german/italian) "Axis."

A Word doesn't make a person racist, an Idea does.

2 Nah, in this case I think the guy really was a racist shit, he really emphasized the slur, kinda in a "I fucking dare someone to call me on it" kinda thing.

3 okay, I was just making the distinction, truly racist fucks can go fuck themselves.

I think most of you know something of me, I'm not a racist, and racists piss me off.  Some of my coworkers, and one in particular was a real dick about it.  Guy outweighed me by a hundred pounds, but he would spout "nigger" like it was a comma, In the middle of a shop filled with black people, and I had to constantly correct him (nice guy other than his racism, I know, that sounds weird, but you have to look for the good in people.) "NOT NEAR ME! DAN!"

At 6'1 and a relatively fit 220 (at the time, I've lost too much weight since) This guy was 6'5 and about 300, and almost all muscle (he was a juicer after an assbeating he got in his early twenties) You would see a group of friends turn into enemies, and then everyone apologizing.

A shame we have to work so hard to get that ignorance out of the minds of adults.

4 I would have to go through a significant internal struggle if someone directly challenged me or the environment to challenge them on their ignorance.

I remember watching "Mississippi Burning." when I was a kid, and the line that stands out for me is "If you can't be better than a nigger, than . . . .(whatever the rest of the line is.)"

The Dehumanization that Genes character created of his own father, was rather profound for me, cuz it's something completely alien to my understanding, and with my own history, and that phrase in mind, and some dipshit saying something like that, would likely set me off.

I stopped talking to my own father (who I love) for about a year, when he went off on a racist rant.  After he shut up, I said something like "I don't like you anymore dad, and when you figure out why, I will answer your calls."

5 I will always know that Deep Creek Lake is in Garrett (sp?) County.

My friend's brother had a "cabin" on the lake, we went for a weekend in September and were in a bar on the lake, we boated to it, watching MNF between the Foreskins and the Cowboys (my friends were all from DC).
A girl started "shushing" her boyfriend when he responded, very loudly, emphatically and positively:
"Don't shush me, you can say nigger loud as you want anywhar in Garrett County"

I didn't put the emphasis on "anywhar", he did.
We all cheered him, not in agreement but in a, "You go idiot" way, he said to his girlfriend, "See?"
