We're number one! We're number one!For sentencing teenagers to life in prison...I'm gonna take a wild guess and say Philly is to blame. This information came from Human Rights Watch, unsurprisingly. Liberal hand-wringing is sure to follow.
Basically the reason is because PA is pretty rigid in sentencing for first and second degree murder, even if you are young. I wonder how long it is till PA lefty politicians start calling for reduced sentences for teenagers who commit these crimes?

I'm still learning from you, but I'm trying to achieve my goals. I certainly enjoy reading all that is posted on your blog.Keep the information coming. I loved it.

I told you, all shoes all the time
First, I would like to thank The Academy doubleplusundead for graciously extending the invite to post here. I promise not to abuse this power. Much.
Second, I did warn you about the shoes. Technically boots in this case, but whatevs.
I want those like burning. Some of us consider Cruella De Vil a role model, you know.
Third, it's so nice to know that now I'm not just known as that bi chick who is terrified of spiders and clowns but I'm now known as that bi chick who is terrified of spiders and clowns and does anal. My mother would be so proud.
Patience and lube, people. Patience and lube. Diamonds are also useful, just sayin'.
Oh and nice boots ... think I'll ship a pair to Pam Anderson and tell her they're made of actual dalmations. She'd probably believe it as she used to think Uggs were sheep-friendly.

This piece was an inspiration for me to share with everyone I know. I must congratulate the author and the place and coming up with a beautiful creature like this.
My very first conspiracy theory!
Earlier today, Barack Obama urged people to watch the debate on CNN (h/t):
And now this. In a post entitled "Obama Won," Quin Hillyer writes (emphasis mine):
Two caveats: First, because of some incredibly bad transportation luck,
I missed the first 17 minutes of the debate, so if there were knock-out
blows during those 17 minutes, I missed them. Second, I cheated: I
watched very closely the CNN response dial. The dial clearly showed
that Obama won. And the dial matched my impressions.
I want to know who was in those focus groups, and how "independent" they actually are. Hey, I'm just "raising questions."

RMT is currently constructing the Kahuku Wind facility located on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. The 30-MW facility will feature 12 wind turbines and will generate enough clean energy to power about 7,700 homes each year. RMT is providing engineering, procurement, and construction of the civil and electrical infrastructure, including roads, crane walks and pads, turbine foundations, tower erection, a 23-kV underground collector system, a 23/46-kV step-up substation, and a 7,000-square-foot operations and maintenance building.

With the economy nosing us down the path to a future where we're all wandering the desert in spiked hockey pads
and Captain Bullshit apparently gaining in the polls, you may be
tempted to crack open your neighbor's skull and feast on the goo

"Serenity Now" or two, and chillax. And I'm here to help you do just that, with...bunnies!

I lived in Japan for 4.5 years back in my more respectable days. That doesn't seem weird at all. Seeing 'saririmen' calmly reading tentacle rape porno comics on the subway on the way home from work and nobody giving it a second thought? To me, that's weird.

And reading Megan McArdle over the last few days really drives the point home. Also, it makes me pretty sure I was wrong when I said the government shouldn't get involved in this one. It is one thing to stand on principle and object to writing blank checks to failing businesses but another to give large loans (in effect) to businesses that will probably be able to repay them in the middle term.
Anyway, read basically everything on her site if you are curious about the current financial situation and feel like being overwhelmed by economics.
Correction: After being told what's up in the comments, I have to suggest that Megan McArdle (and the entire Atlantic Magazine) be added to the DPUD banned website list. I read MA since she started and always found her writing thoughtful and well-informed but in the last several years her writing on politics has strayed further and further from reality. Now, Gabriel informs me that she's parroting that ridiculous Trig Trutherism horseshit on her blog.
It is always very disappointing when someone you respect lets you down.
Meh. McArdle is half-smart when it comes to this stuff. I stopped reading her a long time ago because she always just asks a lot of rhetorical questions without any real analysis. Reading her today, I see that nothing has changed.
Anyone not asking the question of what happens when the Alt-A resets come down the pipe in a year or two shouldn't be writing on this subject at all.

Perhaps more proof that I'm not an economist. At any rate, is there anyone anywhere that actually knows what is happening with these 'bail outs?'
It seems that even the people voting on them have no idea.

I do work in the finance industry, and I avoid saying anything (unlike most topics) because I know just enough to know I don't know what the hell to do. I generally frown on government intervention, but I fear the alternative solution (to a government caused problem, BTW) would be disastrous.

The housing bubble blog is a good place for general info. The problem is you have to read the comments, but a lot of the commenters there are also half-smart and a lot are also socialists. It can be hard to sort out the wheat from the chaff.
I'd like to think I know what I'm talking about, but as I always say, this stuff is so incredibly complicated, I'd need my own blog to do it any justice (as commenting should be reasonably short). I posted a few screeds in a thread yesterday and one today (with the added bonus of me getting into a pissing contest with JackStraw) over at Moron Central, if you care to see some of what I think. Ace doesn't post too many econo threads, so they shouldn't be hard to find.
Anyway, that's gonna have to bit it from me for a bit as I promised the kiddies they could play Spore on my system.

I'm one of the people that's been reading Megan since her original blogging days at "Live at the WTC!" That's seven years, I've been following her.
Three weeks ago she repeated the Trig Trutherism smear which she no doubt read on her fellow Atlantic writer Sully's blog. And that's when I called it quits.

Heh, hope you know I'm kidding ... you get a lot of shit at Moron Central, but you're obviously a very smart guy ... just accept the fact that you can keep learning, and you're in great shape.
Hell, I even learned something today in an Ace econ thread ... which seems pretty hard to believe to me ... jdub put me some knowledge on tungsten. Eccentric, and probably useless, but you never know.

I'm looking at you Bill O'Reilly & Lou Dobbs
One of my newest pet peeves is having people declare that I'm not "fair minded" or "able to think independently" because my political positions are based on a guiding political philosophy, rather than however I feel at any particular moment.

What is it Log Cabin says? He gets a lot more grief from gays about being Republican than he gets from Republicans for being gay.

Yeah, I'm bi. Thus the fake dyke accusation. Because you see, either I'm a dyke who is in denial or I'm a straight chick who is trying to be hip by claiming to like girls. There is a very large segment of the gay/lesbian community who flatly refuse to believe that bisexuality exists. It's spectacularly tedious to fight about.
I absolutely get more grief from gays about being Republican than I do from Republicans for being gay. It's not even close.

Millions of spiders have colonized the HafenCity revitalization of Hamburg's old port district, daily Berliner Morgenpost reported on Monday. Some windows alone are infested with more than 700 creepy crawlers.
The carefully planned district is chock-full of angular modern architecture with plenty of nooks perfect for the larinioides sclopetarius. The spiders seem to like the district so much that they appear to be taking over one of Europe's largest building sites, according to the paper.
“They are the rats of the spider world,” biologist Anja Nioduschewski told the paper. HafenCity is financing the doctoral student's research into the arachnid problem.
The spiders can grow up to four centimetres long and they spin large webs to catch their prey. Nioduschewski is researching whether two different light treatments will scare other insects away, removing the spider's source of food. But so far, neither treatment has worked, she said.

There are choices. Catch a million flies and feed the flies big meals loaded up on arsenic. Release the flies and let the spiders eat them. Repeat 50 times. Do over for next generation of spiders.
OR.... Fire. Lots and lots of hot fire.
"Thou shalt not suffer a spider to live." or something like that.

he is a full-blooded Hispanic woman. She is probably more than 70 years old, silver-haired, small creases his face, smiling the way just as the spring breeze rippled the clear water.
(I can't see the video but I have a feeling I know what you're talking about).
Talk about creeped out, I was watching the Discovery Channel last night, a show called "Before the Dinosaurs" about the creepy-crawlies that were around before lizards and mammals took over.
They had a 10-foot centipede. A 10-foot centipede. They had gigantic spiders (Is that the clip?) and they had huge dragon flies.
So this morning I'm sitting in my office right around sun-up and this big-ass dragon fly is buzzing my window. No, not the one with the 3-foot wingspan, but still pretty darn big. I thought it was after me. I half expected it to come crashing through the window.

The clip you can't see is from "Before the Dinosaurs," Veeshir. And it includes the giant spiders and ten-foot-tall millipedes. Like my brother said as we were watching it, any bug that you can actually hear walking on the ground is really bad news.

During this historic time, pointing out the socialistic agenda of our
new President, does nothing to help him achieve the changes he hopes to
bring. The President clearly pointed out to the Republicans that they
should not listen to you. Sadly given the vote this evening in the
house, too many of them are not following the guidance of the
President. If you continue to speak such truthful things about our
President, the minority party will only strengthen their resolve to
stand firm against the President's wishes. Please remember this every
day you are on the radio.
