McCain-Palin trivia for the night
I swear I won't single-handedly turn this blog into an "all Palin, all the time" format, but I can't really get it out of my head. So deal with it.
Anyway, I just realized that this is the first time since Reagan-Bush 1984 that both nominees on a major party ticket haven't been lawyers. John McCain went to the U.S. Naval Academy while Sarah Palin got a journalism degree from the University of Idaho.
No offense to Gabe, of course, but that's kind of refreshing.
Update: I once again prove my Moron credentials. This is the first time a national ticket has had two non-lawyers since...ummm...2004.
Yeah, Cheney's one of those evil oilmen that has daily transfusions of the blood of innocents from those fallen during the epic 'War for Oil', or some I'm told--his misbegotten sidekick is one of those evil, capitalist, MBAs: monsters of baseless agresssion, again, for oil.
They don't do God's work like The One who organized communities in uprisings against "The Man" and, in his spare time, rescued kittens from trees. His sidekick, Lyin--err, Smilin' Joe Biden apparently has an IQ higher than yours...if you hadn't heard.

Indian man buys out theatre to prove horror movie isn't too scaryI wish I had that kind of money to throw around. Then again, that might not be that bad in India, I'm guessing because people are poorer, there are a lot of movie watchers, so tickets are probably cheaper, unlike here where they take half a week's pay for a ticket. In any case, the film has been advertised as being too scary to watch alone.
These goofy "so scary that" promotionals and ads are ridiculous, but my favorite of these promotionals is for The Screaming Skull (which was featured on MST3K, you can see the corny promotional after the Gumby short, or skip to 6:00, but the Gumby bit was funneh),
Approval poll
Whaddya think of the GOP House performance? The Senate? Bush? Whaddya think of McCain? Hawkins has a series of polls at RWN, I petitioned for "Abysmal" as a choice, but I doubt that's happening.
That blog has been around how long? And he isn't able to do inline polling yet? Getting a full redirect is really farking annoying.
Also, having a simple approve/disapprove is idiotic. For example, relative to the Senate, the House republicans look awesome, but they're still mediocre at best.

The "Republicans" have given up any semblance of being a party standing on anything resembling core principles(for un-principled expediency known as pragmatism), from the top(POTUS) to the bottom(state gov't)and the ticket in November is just one more reflection of that abdication of personal responsibility, party-wide, at every level. "Republicans" now argue over things that are just varying degrees of socialism/moral equivalence that even Democrats wouldn't have seriously considered 40 years ago. The RINO Party now offers its constituents slower creeping socialism, and globalist surrender of national sovereignty...

McCain, who has pulled even with Barack Obama due in part to his very effective attacks on Obama's "celebrity," spent the evening collecting checks from Hollywood stars or people who once might have fit that description. Among those attending: Dean Cain (Superman); James Caan (Godfather I and II, Bottle Rocket); Jon Voight (Midnight Cowboy, Deliverance); Robert Davi (License to Kill); Lou Ferrigno (The Incredible Hulk); Adam Carolla (The Man Show); Lacy Chabert (Party of Five).

McCain VP Survey
John Hawkins at RWN sometimes does surveys of opinions from various bloggers from the VRWC, and I'm usually on the mailing list now, so I've done a few. This one is about McCain and the VP selection, my results were pretty much in line with the majority, so here be the questions, my choices, and why (if necessary),
Out of the following VP candidates rumored to be on McCain's short list, which one DO YOU THINK HE WILL TAKE?
McCain I think will pick Pawlenty, and that's probably only because he knows he can't get away with putting Lieberman on there.
Out of the following VP candidates rumored to be on McCain's short list, which one WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HIM TAKE?
I think this is pretty obvious if you read our crapblog, most of us at doubleplusundead have been all about Palin.
Out of the following VP candidates rumored to be on McCain's short list, which one WOULD YOU LEAST LIKE TO SEE HIM TAKE?
Lieberman, not because I dislike the guy, because I do like him, but I like him as respectable and civil opposition and as a generally decent (but mostly wrong on policy) guy, but not as a VP.
Vaguely related(since we're talking Presidential candidates and their VPs, but fucking hilarious.
I was going to blast you for not putting Huckaduck as 'least liked', then I actually read the post at RWN and noticed he's not included in the poll.
Hell with it, you should have still answered Huckabee. Wimp.

On the wardrobe malfunction - at least it was only one boob that fell out so I'm only blind in one eye. yikes. It was bad enough the first time.
I have to agree. Lieberman isn't all that bad - I think he's got scruples even if his policy sucks and blows in some areas.

I'm looking forward to that, too. Haven't decided if they give away too much in the preview or not - I've read the book, my husband hasn't, I'm not sure if he picked up on the psychiatrist or not when we saw the trailer. Didn't want to ask so he didn't figure it out from me asking.

Random thought on the Biden pick
Could the idea with picking Biden be that they are in fact hoping Mr. Smarm inevitably puts his foot in his mouth? Someone as gaffe-prone as Mr. Smarm will probably say something stupid and outrageous enough at some point to draw strong political fire from the right. That might possibly draw it away from Obama, which could be useful.
If you've ever listened to Dick Morris, he always says that when he was a Clinton advisor and the GOP attacked Hillary, the Clintonistas were cool with it because the GOP wasn't making political attacks on Bill. I wonder if in part a similar philosophy is at work here.
The Biden pick is because Obama needs an adult supervisor on the campaign trail, someone to wipe up his dribble, to powder his behind and tell him how it's special and different from everybody else's.
Seriously- they needed at least one actual politician with experience on the ticket. I think it's a rule or industry standard or something.
There's only one state that would dare give you the crazy rasberry ant
\ Lone Star!
Yes, it seems that parts of Texas have been invaded by a type of crazy ant(yes, there really is a breed of ant called the crazy ant, they don't move in single file like most ants, more of a disorganized horde, hence the "crazy"). It is now informally named the Rasberry crazy ant, after an exterminator who discovered the pest early on. For some reason, they actually try and go after wiring and electronics like food, and are wreaking havoc on wiring and electrical systems in parts of Texas.

My dad called me around lunchtime to note that he was watching an old episode of Lingo on Game Show Network, and noticed that one of the contestants was none other than Silky Pony's baby momma Rielle Hunter. Earlier this month, a blast near a police station in northern Algeria wounded 21 people. And a suicide bomber on a motorcycle targeted a military convoy in late July, injuring 13 soldiers.
In both instances, the militant group Al Qaeda Islamic Maghreb claimed responsibility.
The same group also is accused of orchestrating a double car bomb attack in Algiers in December that struck a United Nations headquarters and Algeria's Constitutional Council building. The attack killed dozens of people, including 17 U.N. staffers.
What? Algeria wasn't involved in the war in Iraq? Well, surely large contingents of U.N. soldiers raped the innocent in Iraq! No?
AQIM seeks to destabilize countries such as Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, which it sees as enemies of the Islamic state, authorities say.
Then it must be the Moroccan and Tunisian soldiers who were especially brutal in Iraq and Afghanistan! No? You mean to tell me that this bombing didn't have anything to do with Goebush McHitlerBurton's war for oil?
Are you implying that AmeriKKKa isn't responsible for Al Qaeda's wrath but rather, that Islamic terrorists are nihilistic monsters who only yearn to destroy all that their betters have created?
Say it ain't so!

McCain handed opportunity
Now, will he screw that opportunity up or not? In any case, Obama is getting hammered for his ghoulish stance on abortion and lies about the issue. I have to think even some people who are moderately pro-choice are going to be turned off by Obama's extreme positions and record on the issue.
1
I'm vaguely pro-choice and I think his position is utterly disgusting. Once a fetus is outside the mother's body, it's a child. There should be no freaking question as to whether or not that child should receive medical care. The fact that it's even debatable is horrifying. That's infanticide, pure and simple. I feel the same way about partial birth abortion.
The more things like that and sex selective abortion and selectively aborting multiples becomes somehow acceptable, the less I support abortion at all.
Of course, I firmly believe that Roe v. Wade is one of the worst Supreme Court decisions ever so I'm not precisely sending funds off to NARAL here.

My prediction is that McVain will follow his normal "Mavericky" course and shoot himself in both feet by being a LIBERAL ally, as usual, and taking a LIBERAL VP.
Posted by: J David at August 18, 2008 11:38 AM (FWuUZ)
The problem is Obama picked the worst possible response, which was to vacillate. Look, he's a Democrat. It doesn't surprise anybody that he votes pro-choice. Instead of saying "I'm pro-choice, and that was bad legislation" or some such, he's trying the tired "I'm personally against abortion but have to vote pro-choice" line that Democrats seem to think fools naive evangelicals into voting for them.
Here's a clue: it doesn't. Single-issue abortion voters always pull D if they're pro-choice, and R if they're pro-life. End of discussion.
Why either side feels it necessary to try to convince these single-issue voters to cross the aisle will always be a mystery to me.
