Life imitates "Buddy Christ"

I'm not a religious person, and I'm not easily offended, but somehow, this just seems...wrong:

Father David Buckley unveiled the £35,000 seven-foot high bronze statue at the Our Lady Immaculate and St Philip Neri Catholic church in Uckfield.

Cornish's sculpture was funded by money left by Winifred Gregory, 87, a member of the congregation who passed away last year.

Christ is wearing jeans and a shirt billowing in the wind while his hair and beard are neatly and fashionably trimmed.

You can see a photo of the statue at the link. It kind of looks like he should be riding a skateboard.

1 The face even looks like Buddy Christ.

I suppose I can appreciate their reasoning, but I'm not much for modernization of religion.

2 It doesn't look anything like Jesus (or at least modern depictions of him). The only clue as to who the sculpture is of is that it is on a church. Although the halo does narrow it down.

3 Okay, let me see if I have this straight. Jesus wearing jeans = bad. Jesus depicted wearing a loin cloth and being executed = good. Any religion that takes an instrument of torture and execution and turns it into a symbol of its faith is disgusting.

(I usually try to ignore trolls, but that's weapons-grade assholity there, and I say this as someone who no longer believes)

Spoken like an idiot who doesn't understand symbolism.

Hate-filled and stupid is no way to go through life son.

I gotta disagree on the skateboarding deal, he's dancing. Those are definitely "jazz hands".

One other thing, does anybody else get the feeling that Uckfield's slogan is

"Help us buy an "F"?

I mean, that statue belongs in Fuckfield.

And yes, I do usually go for the low-hanging fruit. Why do you ask?

Blarg:

As someone who is marginally religious, take this into account: Jesus probably did wear only a loin cloth while executed. Jeans? Not so much.

As for the rest of the statue, I could care less, but why is it you love coming here to be an asshat, but never stick around to defend your positions?
