Haiti

I watched the 60 minutes special on Haiti last night and I don't have much to say after watching a front-loader scoop corpses into a truck like in Soylent Green.

I don't know how that country can ever recover.  It seems almost certain that Haiti as it has been is gone and a new country will have to rise up and take its place.

1 I'm shocked as hell that the civil unrest isn't more widespread and deadly.  I guess these people are used to the government failing them and being on their own.  I can only imagine if such levels of incompetence were being displayed in a recovery effort here in the US.  It makes the Katrina debacle pale in comparison

2 Did anybody else hear the announcer in yesterday's Jets/Chargers game call it "Hatia" (Haysha)?
Not Simms, the other guy.

6 Yes, I heard him call it Hay-Sha.  I had family over for a birthday party and it got a big laugh.

Morans.

Okay, here's my chance to get booed down.

Haiti is ungovernable*, and all our well-meaning aid to the survivors won't change that. I would rather not see American forces tied down in a place that is basically Somalia with more seashore and I don't think there'll be a phoenix to rise from these ashes.

*Ungovernable by Western standards: the deeds required to make Haiti into a (non-totalitarian) functioning state are such that no Western government would support them . You can't make bricks without straw, you can't keep peace where there is none originally, and you can't 'restore' a functioning government to a place where there hasn't been one in over a generation.

8 We'd have to take it as something like Guam or Puerto Rico, except with lots of machetes and home-made guns. declare martial law, send about a brazillion military police (not Marines) with lots of nasty riot gear for a lot of years.
Cannonize Aristide if he shows up, they must have some big black powder cannons in some old French fort/tourist attraction/thug's HQ.

After the MPs get along doing their thing, send in Haliburton to "rebuild" it (this time, with rebar!).
It would be much easier than Iraq, there would not be an endless supply of crazed suicidals, just a bunch of dudes "fucking up in a fucked up world" (to steal a line from Eric Flint's 1632).

If the gov't wasn't just a bunch of corrupt thugs stealing everything in sight, they'd probably rather be working and eating like, food and stuff, if we're the gov't, that takes care of the source of most of the problems that country faces.
After that, it would probably be a cool place. We could get some evil logging companies to go down to figure out how to make some forests quick, some golf courses and get Hilton and co. in there because they can trust the gov't (US, well, sorta trust them) and then Haiti is a good vacay spot.

That's not what's gonna happen. The UN will "organize" things, so only people with cute kids will get the aid, the NGOs will get high and screw children and the UN apparatchiks skim off the top half of the $billions and then, when the world gets tired of paying attention, Haiti goes back to its hell.

It sucks to be Haitian. Even Cuba probably looks good from there.

10 mrfixit, great idea.
The pay-per-view rights alone would pay to rebuild the country afterward.
