District 9

I saw several kids under 13 at a showing of District 9. It’s not for kids. It’s rated R for a reason (and no, it hasn’t any pirates). The film has zero nudity and very little other sexually suggestive content. Given the American tolerance for violence and language, it takes a lot of both to get an R-rating without sex. Don’t take your kids to see this film. Just don’t.

I’m certainly not revealing anything new to say that District 9 has strong racial overtones. For Pete’s sake, they set it in Johannesburg. But race is an imperfect analogy for the movie, and one that the movie doesn’t force down the viewer’s throat. If you’re worried about a ham-fisted race lecture, don’t be. Look to Alien Nation for your racial commentary. Instead, worry about more mundane distractions, like character and plot.

Michael Vick, you ignorant slut

Baseball players are so stupid.

It contained a link to an August 16 item in the New York Post. Brian Costello of the Post writes in the first paragraph of the article that, on the evening after Vick's return to the practice field, he "sat in a corner booth . . . in the Riverbend Bar & Grill, sipping on a Grey Goose and pineapple juice and talking with two friends."...Vick's conditional reinstatement to the NFL contains an express prohibition against the use of drugs and alcohol.
Doesn't Vick know that Grey Goose is a girl drink?

I've Been There

I just wasn't as motivated as this guy:

A Chinese lorry driver jumped into a fast-flowing river because he couldn't take his wife's nagging anymore.

Zhou and his wife were on a ferry on the Yangtze River when it all became too much for him, reports the Chongqing Evening Post.

Members of the ship's crew saw the man suddenly run out of his cabin with his hands covering his ears, and shouting: "I can't stand it any longer."

They initially thought he was suffering from an ear injury and went to help him but found he was unhurt.

"While we were still puzzling over the this, his wife ran up and continued nagging him," said one crewmate.

"The husband covered his ears again and said: 'I need a break' before jumping over the side into the rushing river.

Heh.

From the insatiable Zombie Reagan:

How do you tell a communist? Well, it's someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It's someone who understands Marx and Lenin.

My Computer Nerd Blog

I'm going to go ahead and abuse my blogging privileges for a minute and pimp my new Programming blog Out on a ZiMB

I know its above the heads of you morons but I'll be talking about PHP development, primarily in the context of IBM System i platforms but will also wonder into general Web Development topics and geeky news.

If that is your bailiwick, check it out.  Otherwise ignore it and I'll enjoy the sweet, sweet search engine bounce achieved by posting it here.

In related news, if you happen to watch that season of The Real World, you may see me dancing like a white boy in the back of the shots.  Also, the blond one has good style and I told her as much.

My first reaction is "You've got to be kidding"

but maybe this isn't so stupid after all.

In July, in a sharp break from tradition, the Army began encouraging its personnel — from the privates to the generals — to go online and collaboratively rewrite seven of the field manuals that give instructions on all aspects of Army life.

The program uses the same software behind the online encyclopedia Wikipedia and could potentially lead to hundreds of Army guides being “wikified.” The goal, say the officers behind the effort, is to tap more experience and advice from battle-tested soldiers rather than relying on the specialists within the Army’s array of colleges and research centers who have traditionally written the manuals.

I served a total of 14 years between the Army and the Navy most of it as Hospital Corpsman assigned to the Fleet Marine Force . One of my major complaints at the time was that instructions and training manuals were always years out of date with what was going on in the real world. This seems like an attempt to address that issue and that is a good thing, but I have concerns.

The idea behind doctrine is to have a common jumping off point for everyone. If it is constantly in a state of revision how is that supposed to work? Additionally most US military doctrine is extensively wargamed and tested in various exercises before it ever makes it onto paper but here it seems like anyone who has had one harebrained scheme work once can add it to the wiki and now it is accepted wisdom. That doesn't seem real smart to me. Granted according to the article there will be editors assigned to review each change but what will the criteria for review be, and if this program takes off what will the backlog be?

I hope the review is going to be strict because I have the feeling that the main users of this are going to be the people who feel like "the brass" can never do anything right and good knows wjat kind of moronic solutions they are going to propose.  If this program is utilized by responsible Officers and NCO's and suggestions are properly reviewed however I can see where it could be very helpful in addressing changing situations in a real time fashion.

A Blackness in the sky

Via the Agitator we find Science Blog's post on a Hubble Telescope video.
To quote Science Blog, "If you watch only one astronomy video this year, make it this one."
They found a blank section of sky, as black as they could find with no stars. It was about the size of "a grain of sand held at arm's length" and focused the Hubble on it for a week or more. They saw (edited for loose facts)three thousand galaxies as they were 13 billion years ago. Then, they did it again with better stuff and saw even earlier the light images were still from about 13 billion years ago but they were older than the previous.

Very cool.
Below the fold is a pic from the oldest light images they've captured.

Wow

On the one hand, shame on Denver Police Department for not protecting a suspect in custody.  On the other hand, kudos to the suspect for saving us the cost of trial and incarceration, and more kudos for thinking innovatively.
