Speculative Fiction

I'm sure it's old, but it's new to me.
It's a huge compilation of free stories from various sci-fi authors. Lots of it is from Amazing and Astounding Stories and stuff like that from the 30s, 40s and 50s.
Very cool.

They're the ones who call it "Speculative Fiction". That's always made me laugh.
It's what you call science fiction in polite company. So naturally I always point and laugh when I hear it.
I don't get invited to polite company too much. Odd that.

I forgot where I saw it, I had a comment thread bookmarked from years ago that I clicked, at Sharp as a Marble, I either clicked his blogroll and found the link at that site or found it in his archives.

The Emmy your Emmy could smell like!

Old Spice Guy won an Emmy! Okay, okay technically the creative team at the ad agency but if Gore has an Oscar than Old Spice Guy has an Emmy.

Annnnd obligatory.

And this is great - it's an interview about how the ad was made.  Dear God, the guys are 12.

D-Day Piper Bill Millin Dead at 88

You might remember the bagpipe scenes from The Longest Day...yeah, Millin was that guy.  Not Hollywood BS, Millin was a real guy, and he really did play the bagpipes during Normandy.  Even though playing the pipes had pretty much been barred from frontline action since WWI, Millin's commanding officer ordered him to play anyway in order to boost morale, and Millin complied.

You have to admire a guy who'd march unarmed onto Sword Beach, playing away on loud bagpipes while Jerry's shooting at you and lobbing mortars and shells your way.

WANT! FUCKING WANT!!1!1!ty

I mean, I really, really, really fucking want this. And the name of the company? Scandicraft! How fucking awesome!

The quadrotors can launch, recover, and recharge themselves at their huts (or “hangars” I guess), and when it snows (which I hear it doesn’t do once or twice a year), the bots can stay snug at home, enjoying their stylish furnishings which you can find at your friendly neighborhood IKEA as part of the new Röböüüüt collection.

Only thing missing? A Machine gun. Other than that, it's fucking perfect!

Watching this video gave me the kind of boner that leads to an awesome night of pork roasts and pussytubing.

So, 1 in 5 Americans Think Obama is a Muslim

That's obviously idiotic.

Everybody knows that Obama is an atheist.

I'd suggest he could be an agnostic but I'm pretty sure there is no topic on which Obama would admit he doesn't know the answer.

Not to belabor the point but...

is Ace on fucking fire or what?

So -- Confederate flag at the SC statehouse again?

Because the people flying the flag there say they too have good, non-objectionable motivations for doing so -- a reminder of heritage, honoring the dead, etc., etc. But previously we have shown skepticism towards their claimed motivations, and also decided their motivations were irrelevant -- it wouldn't even matter, we decided, if their motives were pure; the important thing was the Confederate flag was too hurtful to have near the people's house of government.

Again, so I now find out this isn't the rule anymore.

So if it's not the rule anymore: Why can't we have the Confederate flag at the SC statehouse?

Yes, I know, blacks (and others, including whites) consider it offensive and a nasty reminder of a national tragedy; but the spokesmen from Cordoba House have a response to such concerns, and that response is "Fuck yourself, get over it already."

So why doesn't that work in South Carolina, too?

I bring it up because making that leap to tie those together is simply genius.

Kate Mara has a little sister

And I thought that at least one of our bloggers would be interested that she's been cast as Lisbeth Salander, but he hasn't even bothered responding.

This is Rooney Mara, Kate's little sister.  Kate and Rooney are great-granddaughters of the founders of both the Steelers and the Giants, BTW.

It's amazing how few cheesecake shots of Rooney are out there.

In case you've forgotten who Kate Mara is...

And now for something completely different

Have some random dancing videos, just because watching people be amazing at what they do always puts me in a good mood.

Astaire was 50 when he did that, btw.

Oh Mikhail, seriously, you're unreal.

When I think class, I think Gene Kelly. Also, I can't even stand up on roller skates.

As DPud put it so well, crapblog needs moar Aishwarya.

Oh, Cyd. Greatest. Legs. Ever.

This is more awesome than "You got your chocolate in my peanut butter!"

It's especially awesome because the person who talked me into watching Chuck and the person who introduced me to the Old Spice Guy responses are hitched and all.

The only way it could get any better is if Isaiah Mustafa had a recurring role. I could totally see him as an NSA agent constantly pissing off John Casey by being bigger, badder, smarter, and more handsome than Casey.  Preferably with his shirt off.
