Parnell vs. Young: What's next?

I woke up this morning to the disheartening news from Alaska:

Republican Rep. Don Young — whose three and a half decade hold on Alaska’s sole House seat was imperiled by political ethics controversies — holds a razor-thin lead over Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell who ran a strong primary challenge against the embattled congressman.

With 98 percent of the state’s precincts reporting in the House contest, Young led Parnell by a margin of just 145 votes. At one point late in the count, Parnell had held a small lead over Young. That tiny gap, if it holds up in the final results, could permit the trailing candidate to call for a recount. Republican state Rep. Gabrielle LeDoux received the remaining 9 percent of the vote.

Hopefully Sean Parnell will seek a recount.

I would like to go ahead and congratulate Gabrielle LeDoux for getting our attention by staying in a race she had no chance of winning.  I'd hope that she'd feel some shame for (possibly) allowing Rep. Don Young to eek out a primary victory,  but with her being a politician I know there's no way that will happen. 

So when Democrat Ethan Berkowitz gets sworn in as Alaska's sole House member this January, you can thank Ms. LeDoux.

McCain should be more careful about timing

As you may have heard, Sen. McCain may be changing the timing of his vice presidential selection announcement.

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain may announce his choice for a running mate earlier than expected, sources told FOX News on Monday.

McCain had previously said he would announce his vice presidential pick on Friday and would appear with that individual at a rally in Dayton, Ohio, following the announcement.  Friday is McCain’s 72nd birthday.

But sources close to McCain’s campaign told FOX News that his decision may come sooner than that — possibly on Thursday, when Barack Obama accepts the Democratic nomination at Invesco field in Denver, Colo.

I think this is a huge mistake.  There is no way--no way--that any news agency is going to turn attention away from the Sermon on the Mount to see who is going to be at the bottom of the GOP ticket. 

That being said, if he does choose to do this, I think we can rule out any typical old, boring, Republican white guys.

Don't Hit the Cowbell

Fewer Americans went without health insurance in 2007 than in the prior year, while there was a gain in median household income adjusted for inflation, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday. The number of people without health insurance fell to 45.7 million in 2007 from 47 million in 2006, the government said in its annual snapshot. Median household income adjusted for inflation rose 1.3% to $50,233. The poverty rate hit 12.5% in 2007, compared with 12.3% in the prior year - not statistically different, according to Census.

This can't be possible. We're in the worst depression since the FDR was in office and there is absolutely no way that people can get health insurance without being blessed by The One.

 I call bullshit.

Primary day in Alaska

Today is the Alaska House GOP primary. 

Rep. Don Young will be out of office regardless of what happens in this primary, but I'd rather him get taken down here so the seat will stay in GOP hands.  So if you're in Alaska, make sure to go vote for Parnell today.  I'll have the results posted tonight!

Time for some Saturday night K-Lo bashing

I should really be doing something more interesting on a Saturday night but, well, here we are.  Here's Kathryn Jean Lopez talking about inspiring politicians:

A born-again Christian woman who sat next to me on the plane from Chicago said the exact same thing to me. Bizarre in one sense — she clearly gets that from Christ, but Obama gives her some added kick.

We really need a pol on our side inspiring people. We're losing that contest.

The problem is that we do have politicians on the GOP side who can inspire people.  You just never hear about them because people like K-Lo only push boring, generic, uninspiring politicians like Mitt Romney. 

I'm also a little creeped out that she thinks we need an "inspiring" politician in the mold of Barack Obama.  That's the last thing I want.  We came close to a Messianic cult of personality with Ron "I see nothing wrong with advertising on Stormfront" Paul.  It's not exactly something I want to recreate.  It's tacky and leads to the type of unhinged apologetics we're seeing out of the Obama supporters.  I know the point she was trying to make, I just think it was a clunky way of saying it.

What McCain's new "Biden" ad really means

In case you missed it, here is McCain's new ad featuring Joe Biden's preference of McCain over an inexperienced Barack Obama:



As DrewM points out, this is exactly the type of ad you would expect to see "every time the VP choice is someone who was in the primaries." 

This begs the question: Would McCain put out an ad like this if he too was choosing someone he fought against in the primaries?  Unless McCain has lost all good sense (big "if," I know) he won't pick someone who will allow Obama and the DNC to turn around and do the same thing to him. 

Update:  Someone thinks that it will be Romney, now more than ever.  I'll give you three guesses...

Well, there go my nerdblogging plans for the night...

I signed up for the BarryO Super Double Secret VP Text Message^tm so that it would wake me up early in the morning, allowing me to run to the comp and make a quick post and go to bed.  

Well, it seems that (dammit) I gave the Obama campaign access to my phone for no reason, as all signs point to Obama-Biden 2008.  If you needed conclusive evidence that the Obama campaign doesn't know or care that the public thinks BarryO is arrogant, well, there it is.  Ed Morrissey is all over it with updates and a post wondering what went wrong with Obama's VP rollout.

I'll be back with a post tomorrow with who I think McCain should (and will) choose to contrast with Obama's vice president. 

Update: CNN has confirmed that it is Joe Biden.

IOC launches investigation over allegations against Chinese gymnast

As we've seen in recent days, there have not only been verbal accusations, bust some sources that give legitimacy to the accusations.  The IOC has now launched an investigation.  This could be hugely embarrassing to China if they see medals stripped away.  The question is, will this be a thing where they do the investigation quickly while everyone is watching, or later and quietly so not to embarrass China?

That's the rumor.  I should have known, whether it's President or VP, the GOP always goes for the person whose turn it is.

Update: FWIW, I have a source (yeah, you heard me) who says that Rudy Giuliani's people have been on the ground in Ohio and Pennsylvania, but I have no way to corroborate that.  Just sayin'.

I can almost hear the heads exploding at the Family Research Council now

Hallmark has begun to make same-sex wedding cards (emphasis mine):

Hallmark added the cards after California joined Massachusetts as the only U.S. states with legal gay marriage. A handful of other states have recognized same-sex civil unions.

The language inside the cards is neutral, with no mention of wedding or marriage, making them also suitable for a commitment ceremony. Hallmark says the move is a response to consumer demand, not any political pressure.

Can another cage match Huckabee's social conservatives and free market conservatives be far behind?  A blogger can dream, can't he?

Nuclear War

Does this make anyone else uncomfortable?

After Warsaw and Washington announced the agreement on the deal last week, top Russian Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn warned that Poland is risking attack, and possibly a nuclear one, by deploying the American missile defense system, Russia's Interfax news agency reported.

Did a 'top Russian general' just threaten nuclear war? Just now? Holy fucking shit.

Somebody had better fucking blink really soon.  Post-apocalyptic shit is awesome for movies and video games but I think I'd rather my daughter grow up in a world without savage zombie-mutants.
