I don't think I've seen much of anything here about the pastor who wants to burn copies of the Koran on this Saturday, the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, so I'd like to reprint
late Tuesday/early Wednesday (depending on your time zone) with a couple of edits...
Well, that's my take on this controversy, and I'd be happy to hear what you think about it, especially if you agree with me. Because, if we've learned anything over the last twenty or so months, having people refute your arguments is kind of a downer.
1
Nope can't disagree with you at all. However I'd like to tell the GZ Mosque folks that if they Build the mosque WE Burn the Koran...
Matter of fact, if they make the RIGHT move and don't build it, I'll personally fly to Gainsville and denut that pastor before he burns a page...

I think the main reason that burning the koran is a bad idea, other than inciting our enemies, is that, as Christians, one of the main goals of the faith is to live in a way so that others want to do the same. How does this do that?
(Yes, I love run on sentences)

I posted about this over a month ago. But nobody reads the blog that far back
If it weren't for the fact that there will be people there protesting what he's doing, I'd welcome a small bomb dropped on the guy's church, in the same spirit as I'd welcome a small bomb dropped on Westboro Baptist. More in a 'you reap what you sow' sort of thing.

1. This is nothing like Nazi book burnings. The Nazis burned books
to prevent anyone having access to them. Ditto with Muslims (and our troops) burning Bible imports in Afghanistan. I think it's safe to say, this stunt has neither that intent nor effect.
2. Burning the book is not anything like what Muslims do. Unless this will be followed up with razing all mosques and slaughtering all Muslims in the area, with constant patrols to terrorize or kill any stragglers, then it's not really the same thing.
3. This is much closer to when people torched Dixie Chicks CDs back 5 years ago when they claimed they were ashamed to be American. That was a protest, and the burning was symbolic.
4. To claim that it's aces to firebomb someone you mildly disagree with -- even in jest -- kind of proves the point that this kind of symbolism is both common and socially acceptable, no? People burn all kinds of things -- flags, Bibles, CDs, books, posters, effigies. Of course that's offensive (in varying degrees). That's the point. It is a relatively harmless symbolic gesture. A lot of times, people burn something like the Bible that I find horribly offensive. I don't see the hullabaloo erupting about that, and there really shouldn't be. I dismiss the offense and move on. That's what sane people do.

AliceH, your position is much closer to Nazis and Muslims than this guy's is. YOu want to obliterate someone -- offensive someones, true -- that you don't like. Destroy their buildings and, I guess, them with the justification that you don't like what they say.
Aside from the emotional harm these guys cause (and by that I mean the Westboro crowd, who I really cannot stand) what have they done? Have they maimed anyone? Killed anyone? Robbed? Have they even converted anyone to their cause? Aside from being cruel and stupid, what have they done?
Yet, you want to bomb them and you justify it with "you reap what you sow." But they didn't sow violence.
It's safe to say that about the Westboro people, though, isn't it. Not so safe, or socially acceptable, about other groups.

I too am queasy about book burning, no matter the book. I think the pastor could make his point much more effectively by, say, burning the prophet
Muhammad (may He rot in Hell) in effigy.
That said, I fully agree with the pastor that it's time we, the American people, stop our craven capitulation to Islamic terror. I see this event as the first public expression of the anger all real Americans have been feeling since at least 9/11 and I fully expect to see more demonstrations of that anger going forward.
Let's face it we have been relentlessly hectored, and browbeaten into silence by our "leaders" starting with G. W. Bush in the hours and days following 9/11. Well, finally someone has the courage to say, in public, "hold on just a minute there, sparky" we aren't the guilty party here the Islamic terrorist are and it's about time they start worrying about how
we see
them.
Even if, as I expect, the pastor backs down from his Koran burning just the fact that he announced it is enough for now.
By the way, is anyone equally outraged that Rauf just threatened Islamic violence if we don't allow the GZM to be built or even if we require it to be moved? Not that I've heard. Interesting isn't it?

He's not trying to make a point, unfortunately. He's trying to provoke a response.

Isn't the response the point?
I mean, burn a Bible - the intent is to provoke a response, right? To show up the squares how cling to outdated traditions or something?
Burn a Koran, and the intent is to provoke foaming at the mouth outrage in people who can't manage even the slightest provocation, right? The intent is to provoke an hysterical reaction to put paid to the "religion of peace" stuff.

Isn't the response the point?Indeed it is.
Here is a quote that I think we should take very seriously in the war we find ourselves refusing to fight. It's from the Lionel Giles translation of "The Art of War."
"If your opponent is of choleric temper, seek to irritate him."
Note that it's more commonly translated as:
"If your enemy is quick to anger seek to irritate him."
This strikes me as a very good tactic for forcing the enemy to reveal his true nature. And given that they are so very quick to anger there is almost no effort required on our part. Almost anything will work. A cartoon, for example; or refusing them a Victory Mosque at Ground Zero. It's almost too easy.

Actually, Ella, I wasn't responding to you. You're deliberately missing the point.

Alice H, I'm not
deliberately missing the point. I thought the "he" in your statement was the pastor whatever. Who was the he? RayH?

^Agree.
At the beginning of this insignificant contretemps I varied between "who gives a fuck period" to "who cares what this insignificant hick pastor is doing".
...quite unlike how I feel about the middle finger symbolic status of building the New Yawk mosque at Ground Zero btw (which has a degree of symbolism inherent in it, that IS deleterious to the security of the country, as any fricking liberal would understand if they'd crack a history book on Islam).
But at this point in the story ...as of this morning ...since I'm reading so many Islamic threats from their own little home-grown corner of hick-dom, of retaliation to us if "we allow this" to be done ...fuck 'em: let 'em burn. They've made it into an actual issue.
The bigger threat IMHO has become to be seen as conflating a minor local issue into an utterly disastrous response to a global problem ...which is Islamic belligerance and threats.
...and the attempt to insert sharia into a Constitutional republic based upon lots of freedoms. Including speech, and religion. Through threats of generally violent reaction.
Fuck.That.Noise.
It's free-speech ass-fucks: get over it. It's what we do.
Or ...bring it on. Srsly. Let us ...entertain ...you.

So 'Piss Christ' is edgy art while Koran burning is to be condemned from the rafters by all?
My attitude toward both: There are a lot of assholes in the world. What a shock. Who cares.

The guy has the wrong tack entirely by provoking barbarians with an act of destruction. It would be much more nuanced to draw a really detailed depiction of the prophet with a pig's nose and then put it in a glass of urine. Then he could call it "art" and have it's creation underwritten by taxpayers.

I saw on the news last night that some Black Panthers were threatening (unspecified) reprisals if that pastor in Gainesville goes through with his plan to burn Korans.
My first thought was that they were aligning themselves with Muslim terrorists, and, therefore, that they could be tried for treason and as terrorists themselves. But then I thought, hey, we could kill two birds with one stone by sitting back and letting them beat the shit out of that loony pastor, and by then arresting them to get rid of them, too. But, alas, Eric Holder would never allow it ..., arresting the Black Panthers, that is.

Islam is a cancer on humanity. Don't think so. Try going to a Catholic Mass. Don't cross yourself, take communion, or take part in the other rituals and what will happen? Zero.
Enter a mosque and don't remove your shoes and see what happens.
Try to enter Mecca or bring a Bible into Saudi.
I rest my case. Tolerance is another word that the Left uses for submit.
Screw that. Burn them all.
