Baby it's cold outside

Saw this via the Puppy Blender.
Sunspot activity isn't really getting better. It's more active than last year, but still a minimum.
According to the article, the minimum has been for 26 months, normal ones are about 16 months.
Some scientists are measuring magnetic activity in the sunspots. That's been going down steadily.
Now, they're predicting that by 2016 there wouldn't be enough magnetism to sustain sunspots. That seems almost like reverse-global warmmongers. Looking at a trend and assuming it'll continue that way and then WE ALL DIE!!!!!!, except this time from the coming ice age, not from bursting into flames.
At least they note that there's no proof the trend will continue in a straight line graph, but...
There is precedent for the Sun shutting down, the "Little Ice Age" a few hundred years ago, and, of course, the Earth's climate has gone up and down for as long as there's been an Earth.
I have to admit, I'm rooting for the global warmmongers because I really hate the cold, I just prefer my science to have a basis in fact and not endlessly subject to "correction" when you get caught.

I'm sure this is a metaphor for something.

Any ideas what that something is?

Presented without context

"I've got a little penis inside of me," the 34-year-old actress said on NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
Call me lazy, but you know, I don't think I even have to come up with a joke here.

More proof that cockroaches will outlive us all

Cockroach brains kill MRSA and E. coli.

I'm terrified of cockroaches, it's probably the only thing I'm more afraid of than guacamole.  If I were dying of MRSA, and was told that all I had to do to be cured was eat a pill made of cockroach brains, I think you'd all be coming to my funeral.

Hey Alice

I think I figured out why CraigsList is taking down their adult section.

Sadly, the vaccine has not been FDA approved for use on websites.

Upcoming debates on Intelligence Squared

I don't really know if anyone else here is interested in these things, but Intelligence Squared has a number of interesting debates airing over the next couple months.

Sep 14 - Treat Terrorists Like Enemy Combatants, Not Criminals:

In 2009 the Justice Department announced that 9/11 plotter Khalid Shaikh Mohammed would be tried in New York City, setting off a firestorm of protests. Besides the cost and safety concerns, at issue are whether terrorists should be tried in criminal court or whether national security requires the use of military commissions. Likewise, issues like the closing of Guantanamo, the reading of Miranda rights, and enhanced interrogation all center on the same question: How should the U.S. treat captured alleged terrorists? In a war with no foreseeable end, whose actors are neither criminals nor soldiers; can we keep America safe and still bring terrorists to justice.

Oct 6 - Islam Is A Religion Of Peace

Is the rise of terrorism and violence justifiably traced to the teachings of Islam, or is this call to war a twisted interpretation of the true Muslim faith? Most of the world’s 1.5 billion Muslims are moderates who see Islamic terrorism as a violation of their sacred texts. Is it wrong to let a radical minority represent authentic Islam? Has fear blinded us to its lessons of tolerance and peace?

Ayaan Hirsi Ali will be arguing against the motion

Oct 26 - Big Government Is Stifling The American Spirit

Intellectuals, tea partiers and everyone in between are concerned about the size of our government and how it affects America’s financial and political future. Is government intervention in everything from economic policy to health care rewarding the “takers,” and not the “makers,” stifling innovators, entrepreneurs and business owners? Or has government done too little to support the growing poor and rapidly shrinking middle class?

Art Laffer will be arguing for the motion

Personally I find these debates kind of interesting.  The arguments aren't as in-depth as I would like, but it's an hour long show so that's to be expected, however a lot of times I think it points out weak areas in the arguments on both sides.  I find that useful in refining my own arguments for and against certain positions.

Sci Fi Libertarian?

On a whim I started reading "The Prefect" by Alastair Reynolds (along with several short stories) and as I delved through it I found more and more instances in which it almost seemed to have a libertarian (small 'l') bent to its message (what there is of one, which is benevolently minor).

Then I read this phrase:

(Genocide) had to be done the old-fashioned way, the historical way: not with a single catastrophic release of air or heat, something that would have been detectable from afar, but with the apparatus of state: armed force, applied via her new army of servitors. The citizens had been rounded up, pacified with lies and then executed by machine.

It was more impactful when you also consider that it revolves around an unarmed citizenry.   I'm not saying that is his intention but it certainly read as pro-power to the citizen at the expense of the state.

One.  And I'd lay down every fucking penny I own on the fact that these guys will end up fucking things up, I guaran-fucking-tee it, this is PA, land of Murtha, after all.  Seriously, these gas and oil people are spending a ton of fucking money here in this part of PA, the pipelines aren't even set up yet and people are only starting to dipping into their initial royalty checks, but that's all gonna go away if these idiots fuck it up.

Pffft, fucking quitter

As someone with a BA in History, I think it's vitally important to note that the fat Indonesian kid who was smoking two packs of cigs a day has managed to kick the smoking habit with rehab.  Rehab was provided for the child in Jakarta by the Indonesian government.

I giggled like a tard when the reporter referred to the cigs as fags, I'll admit it.

In other news the fat Iraqi gangsta kid was recently quoted recently by Iraqi news sources that he quote "Still won't hesitate to cap a fuckin' bitchass motherfucker."

So, how long till this kid is back up to two packs a day again?  From there, how long till he switches to unfiltered?  How long till he's cast as Tattoo for the inevitable Fantasy Island themed movie that Hollywood'll pinch off onto America's collective lap?

Eh,. there's nothing going on except Minitru/Journolist trying to explain how 300,000+ people on the Mall is no big deal and, of couse, the usual litany of outrages from Obama.
It's hard to keep up with them all. Especially since I try to limit my outrage/week rate. I get worked up.

Nobody's posting so here's a silly thread for a silly season.
Considering that Hollywood loves to remake good movies and make them worse, why don't they remake movies that sucked into something good?

I wish someone who had actually read the book instead of skimmed it for names had done Starship Troopers.

There are some really bad Lovecraft "B" movies that could be fan-farging-tastic. The SciFi channel should be looking into that. There aren't enough 'e's in the word "creepy" for Lovecraft. Again, it needs someone who has actually read some Lovecraft books.

Any ideas?
