Cousin of yours

He's doing it wrong, BTW, you're supposed to hold the lighter in front of the can and use it like a flamethrower...friggin' amateurs, I tell ya.

Connections - Wheel of Fortune

A documentary series by historian James Burke, "Connections" attempted to explain how various historical events and personalities led to discoveries that built off each other to bring about the modern world. Since the series originally ran in 1978 some of the material is a little dated but it is still one of the most interesting programs to have been aired on TV in my opinion. Fortunately James Burke has placed the entire series on YouTube (as well as the two follow on series).

Episode 5 - "Wheel of Fortune" traces astrological knowledge in ancient Greek manuscripts from Baghdad’s founder, Caliph Al-Mansur, via the Muslim monastery/medical school at Gundeshapur, to the medieval Church’s need for alarm clocks (the water horologium and the verge and foliot clock). The clock mainspring gave way to the pendulum clock, but the latter could not be used by mariners, thus the need for precision machining by way of Huntsman’s improved steel (1797) and Maudslay’s use (1800) of Ramsden’s idea of using a screw to better measure (which he took from the turner’s trade). This process made a better mainspring and was also used by the Royal Navy to make better blocks. Le Blanc mentioned this same basic idea to Thomas Jefferson who transmitted this "American system of manufactures" -- precision machine-tooling of musket parts for interchangeability -- to New Englanders Eli Whitney, John Hall and Simeon North. The American efficiency expert Frank Gilbreth and his psychologist wife later improved the whole new system of the modern production line.

I am only embedding the first portion of each episode the entire playlist for the episode is here.

Portal is homework

I've had a history professor who required viewing Monty Python (and asked questions on it in the final exam), but I have yet to have an instructor require me to play a video game for class

OK, that's not true.  I had to play video games for my Flash class. But that was understandable - Kitten Cannon teaches valuable lessons about programming and physics.

Now if we can just convince the curriculators (I'm hesitant to call them educators) of the value of weapons training for the upcoming zombie apocalypse...

Presented without context

"The orgasm is the ultimate feeling of lust; it shouldn't be limited to ejaculation," he said. "You can reach it through art or by looking at a landscape and thinking 'Wow!'"
This actually goes a long way toward explaining why I'm not allowed in various prestigious museums and galleries anymore.

(And, well, let's just say that the less that's said about those high school kids from the art class on their field trip, the better.)

Don't they ever smile?

This is pretty cool.
Color pics by some famous Russian photographer from 100 years ago.
The color makes them freaky.
You don't expect to see some Emir Khan clutching his huge sword in color.

The Cossack looking Khan is freaky too, you can tell he's the real thing. He's not in a play or movie, he's just back from a busy day beheading peasants who were late on their taxes and maybe a quick pogrom on the Jews.

None of them are smiling. It's weird, even the kids aren't smiling.
That's why I don't like Russian literature, if I want depressing people who expect the worst, I'll read Allah.

Logic is not their strong suit.

After watching Penn & Teller's Bullshit, I'm forced to ask:  How is it that the same people who believe in holistic medicine and hate corporations believe that everyone should be required to use corporate health care and that people who keep their children out of the hospital for religious reasons should go to jail?  If that wasn't enough contradictions, they apparently DON'T believe people should get cradle to grave health care if, toward the grave end, they are comatose.

Its almost like they're all crazy.

Fantasy Foozball

Two things.

First, we need one more player to go sign up.

Second, the draft is tonight IF we get that last player.  Else, it will be consigned to a further delay.

How painful is this?

No, seriously, how painful would this be?  It seems like a sort of one-size-fits-all solution, which I'm thinking would be a problem even when it's not serving its intended purpose.

I don't understand the appeal of a 3D penis destroyed by flesh chomping fish. Call me a buzzkill if you wish but I cannot understand why this is funny.
You know, aside from the notion that any rational person would think that the author was "a buzzkill," these may just be the two most sensible sentences ever written in the English language.

Two notable Denver deaths this week

I am sorry to say that Reggie McDaniel died on Friday.  His movie reviews were a refreshing change from your typical Rotten Tomatoes fare, and he was surprisingly spot-on with most of his reviews.

On a brighter note, Bruce Pierce died Monday.  Pierce was the neo-Nazi who assassinated Alan Berg in 1984.  Berg was caustic and liked to cause a ruckus, but no one should die for their words and beliefs.

Cancer Sucks

In keeping with the cancer motif we seem to have here, I'm posting this link to a sports journalist.
Quote
The lymphoma we’d thought we’d beaten into remission back in May came roaring back last month. We threw some really nasty chemo at it. The cancer ate it up and came back for more.

And so I’m going to die, and not in four or five months. I’ve got probably a couple of halfway decent weeks left. Then the lymphoma will take over my bloodstream and kill me.

I can't imagine.
He's going to chronicle the rest of his life.
A year and a half ago my mother died because of cancer.
Ghe cancer didn't kill her, losing huge chunks of her lungs did. She was going in for surgery to remove the cancerous parts when she had a blood clot that stopped oxygen flow to half of the lung that was mostly cancer free.
They couldn't remove what was left as she could barely breathe as it was. She basically suffocated to death over a space of about a month or two.

Cancer sucks, it's interesting and kind of uplifting to see this guy say, "Fuck you".
Not as eloquently as eddiebear, but still interesting.
Via the Agitator
update, title added, I couldn't think of one and put if off and then forgot.
Edited to make my point clear.

Another Series Worth Watching - Physics for Future Presidents

One of the most popular series of videos on youtube Physics for Future Presidents is a synopsis of modern qualitative physics. There is some stuff in here which people will disagree with, he is a global warming and alternative energy advocate for example, but knowing the arguments supporting those propositions is not a bad thing.

Episode I – Atoms and Heat

Next week - Atoms and Heat II

Connections – Distant Voices

I know this is a few days late, it’s been a busy week here and it completely slipped my mind until I saw the ONT over at Ace’s.

Continuing with the weekly posting of the British TV series "Connections".

Episode Three: "Distant Voices" suggests that telecommunications exist because Normans had stirrups for horse riding which in turn led them to further advancements in warfare. Deep mine shafts flooded and scientists in search of a solution examined vacuums, air pressure and other natural phenomena.

I am only embedding the first portion of each episode the entire playlist for the episode is here.

The complete series is available from Amazon
