Anthrax in Nevada - update: false positive

The white powder letters sent to thirty governors' offices this week has been reported to be harmless, until today.

A News 4 crew on the scene reports that hazmat officials returned a 'hit' for anthrax on the white powder found in the state capitol mailroom that has forced its employees into quarantine along with our Lemor Shlomof.
Update: I figure since thirty governors' offices have reported white powder mailings, we can assume the US Post Office is enjoying a 40% mail loss rate.

Another update: Turns out it was a false positive.  Whew!

Damn straight

Apparently, while Joe the Plumber was on the campaign trail, he asked McCain "some pretty direct questions" about the financial industry bailout plan and was "appalled" by some of the answers he got. I know, shocking. But it turns out that he held his nose and voted for McCain for pretty much the same reasons as the rest of us.

While Wurzelbacher was critical of McCain during the interview, he had nothing but praise for his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. “Sarah Palin is absolutely the real deal,” he said.
Oh, and he also stuck with the campaign because the thought of an Obama presidency scared him even more than the idea of Maverick McRino in the Oval Office.

Racist.

Apple Yanks Antivirus Advice*

Steve Jobs is a little bitch:

Apple Inc. late Tuesday yanked a controversial support document from its Web site that had urged Mac users to run antivirus software because the recommendation was "old and inaccurate," a company spokesman said today.

The document, which had become the focus of considerable discussion among Mac users and security experts this week, is no longer available on Apple's support site. Instead, browsers directed to its location display a generic message: "We're sorry. We can't find the article you're looking for."

"We have removed the KnowledgeBase article because it was old and inaccurate," Apple spokesman Bill Evans said in an e-mail Wednesday.

Bill Evans is a little bitch, too.

I prefer the explanation provided by the article's first commenter:

Apple yanked it because it's bad PR and that's all they've got behind them. They care about their users security less than their image.

When you're selling an overpriced product on the back of a cult of hype, PR is all that matters.

* - I wasn't impressed with the previous flame level so I'm asking for it double this time.  Also, while I'm knocking Apple, I figure I should link my favorite slam ever:  One thing PC users can do that Mac users can't.

His slam on the iPhone is pretty sweet, too.

Apparently the Mumbai terrorists had help

But not just the kind we've been thinking of.

Officials said drug paraphernalia, including syringes, was recovered from the scene of the attacks, which killed almost 200 people.

The heavily built men, who had undergone training at a special marine camp established by the Lashkar-e-Taibat (LeT) terrorist group in Pakistan, had also used steroids to build a tougher physique."

We found injections containing traces of cocaine and LSD left behind by the terrorists and later found drugs in their blood," said one official.
I'm sure no one here has ever done any of those drugs, and so cannot imagine how incredibly out of their skulls bugfuck crazy they must have been.  It does seem to explain how they managed to go on for so long without sleep, though.

Ah Shit! Here We Go Again!

Another bomb blast in India. This time on a train.

The explosion occurred shortly after the train arrived at Diphu railroad station, about 200 miles (300 kilometers) south of Gauhati, the capital of Assam state, said District Magistrate M.C. Sahu.

The train was heading from Lumding in central Assam to the eastern commercial hub of Tinsukhia, Sahu said.

While no one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, an intelligence official said an ethnic insurgent group, Karbi Longri National Liberation Front, fighting for wide autonomy in the state for the past five years was suspected. He spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not speak publicly about the details.

The front is one of the three groups active in the region; the other two groups have reached cease-fire accords with the government.

Are you ready for Senator Bill Clinton?

We could only be so lucky.  The policies wouldn't be any more horrifying than Hillary!'s, and think of the comedy gold.

That being said, I don't think he wants the pay cut.

I suppose this is a good thing

The intent of the Mumbai attacks was to kill 5000.

One of the reports said that there was quite a bit of ammunition left over, and the police were surprised at how technologically savvy the terrorists were with their satellite phones and bombing techniques.  I guess the Indian police haven't heard of that thar Intarweb.

The Power of Palinmania

I'm strangely not worried (yet) about Gov. Janet Napolitano of Arizona as the next Secretary of Homeland Security.  Why?  She and Gov. Palin seem to get along well.  I think she probably would have made a better Attorney General, but unfortunately for her she never served in the Clinton Administration.

(Oh, and because it makes it less likely that the term-limited Governor will run against Sen. McCain in 2010.)

Pete Sessions elected NRCC Chairman

Failure of failures Rep. Tom Cole dropped his bid for re-election.  Also:

- Rep. Eric Cantor moves up to Minority Whip

- Rep. Mike Pence will be Republican Conference Chairman.

- Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers is now vice-chair of the conference...whatever that means.  (I have a friend who worked for her, so I feel compelled to give her a plug.)

Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Daschle

Just in from CNN.  And it seems he'll also be one of the 1000s of new czars in the Obama Administration as well:

Three sources close to the transition and in a position to know tell CNN that former Sen. Tom Daschle is President-elect Barack Obama's choice to be Secretary of Health and Human Services and the former Senate Majority Leader has indicated he wants the job.

Most significantly, Daschle negotiated that he will also serve as the White House health "czar" — or point person — so that he will report directly to the incoming President. The significance is this guarantees that by wearing two hats Daschle, and not White House staffers, will be writing the health care plan that Obama submits to Congress next year.

I guess it's just as well.  With a Democratic President and overwhelming Democratic majorities in the House and Senate, there's no need for him to stay at his current job

So, which will it be, Joe?

Sen. Joe Lieberman on Election Day:

BECK: But do you agree that Senator Hatch said to me that if we don't at least have the firewall of the filibuster in the Senate that in many ways America will not survive?

LIEBERMAN: Well, I hope it's not like that, but I fear.

But today, Sen.Lieberman kept his Homeland Security chairmanship, and will likely continue to caucus with a 60-vote Democratic majority in the Senate (if Sens. Stevens, Coleman, and Chambliss all lose).

So, will he help them get to 60?  My guess is yes.

Still here

I haven't been forced to evacuate yet, and I'm hoping that I won't have to, but my best friend's mom and dad had to evacuate last night and haven't been able to get back to see if their home is still standing.

Everything reeks of smoke (which, as a longtime smoker, really says something) and there's the constant sound of water-dropping planes and helicopters flying overhead.  In short, this is just a bit more stress than I usually enjoy during the course of a weekend.

I know that the Soviet of California doesn't get much love in these parts, but there are a lot of good people who have lost their homes in the last few days.  If you feel like donating to the Red Cross for disaster relief, you can do so here.

Veterans Day

Don't really have anything eloquent to offer, just continue to keep those who serve and have served in your prayers.  Eddiebear's brother is currently serving, so do keep him in your prayers, and we thank him for his service.  I know good portion of my readership has served in the military, and some are still active, know that you are appreciated.  If you're a lurker, drop a comment, let us know if you've served or to say thanks to our veterans today.

I'd also recommend you drop by This Ain't Hell and The Sniper today, they're sure to have good posts for this Veterans Day.

Cuffy's post is excellent, do check it out.
