Still here

I haven't been forced to evacuate yet, and I'm hoping that I won't have to, but my best friend's mom and dad had to evacuate last night and haven't been able to get back to see if their home is still standing.

Everything reeks of smoke (which, as a longtime smoker, really says something) and there's the constant sound of water-dropping planes and helicopters flying overhead.  In short, this is just a bit more stress than I usually enjoy during the course of a weekend.

I know that the Soviet of California doesn't get much love in these parts, but there are a lot of good people who have lost their homes in the last few days.  If you feel like donating to the Red Cross for disaster relief, you can do so here.

1 Don't get too close to the fire.  With your vodka-rich blood....yeah know.  POOF!  Gone.

2 Nah, we goof on the Soviet of CA, but by all means, give to the Red Cross for relief if you can.

3 I hate that everything-smells-like-smoke air.  We had it clear up north of Denver during the Hayman fire (down toward Colorado Springs).  Gives me bad dreams.

Is there an organization other than the Red Cross that's helping out out there?  I've been unimpressed with their usage of funds and their attitude to volunteers and donations here.  After a tornado wiped out most of one of the rural towns here, I packed up enough food to feed about 20 people and drove up there.  I was told by the Red Cross that it couldn't be accepted.  I ended up giving it to some non-Red Cross volunteers there, who were more than happy to take it.

4 You might be able to find something here, Alice, though I haven't really checked it out.

5 I'm glad you're okay for the moment and if there's anything we can do, you know we will.  I have a friend in the LA area who nearly had to go to the hospital since the smoke was making her asthma act up and she's a lot farther away than you, so I can only imagine how bad it is there.  Stay safe.

6 Looks like we're gonna be okay here.  There's been fire at the southern edge of town all day, but they announced on the news that no structures have been damaged.
