Math is hard...

So hard it causes the capacitors on Dell computers to fail:

Dell, along with many other manufacturers of PCs, used capacitors produced by Nichicon, a Japanese electronics giant. According to court documents [PDF] in the suit against Dell brought by a major customer, Nichicon sold faulty capacitors, a key motherboard component, that leaked and failed with alarming regularity -- and Dell knew it.

...

Dell didn't make those capacitors, but once the company knew they were faulty, it obviously had a duty to its customers to recall the affected machines. It didn't. Instead it covered up the problems, relying on ridiculous excuses and blaming its customers.

According to the Times, when the University of Texas complained that its Dell PCs were failing, the company said the school's math department had pushed them too hard, making them solve difficult calculations.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that what computers are supposed to do? I work in the ITE industry (or worked actually until I find another ITE job) and I remember the Taiwanese capacitor fiasco very well. It wasn't just Dell that was affected, but most companies fessed up to it immediately.

If the title seems familiar that's because it is

Hitchens has esophageal cancer

I was never a big Hitch fan, but this is very sad news, I cannot begin to tell you how horrible a way esophageal cancer is to go, my great grandfather died from it.  And I hate to sound so concrete on that, but esophageal cancer is one of those ones that is pretty much a death sentence.

And yes, Allah's got that right, cigarettes and excess alcohol will absolutely do this to you, it was rare to see my great grandfather without a lit cigarette in his mouth until his health started going downhill.  Which is why you'll never, ever see me touch a cigarette (well, that and they smell wretched and cheap, yes it's partly tobacco snobbery, too), and only smoke a pipe or cigar on occasion.

I like a good burger as much as the next guy...

...but then again, when I go out to get one, I don't need a Secret Service detail:

When in Rome ... Go to Ray's Hell Burger

President Obama treated Russian president Dmitry Medvedev to a traditional American lunch at the Arlington eatery Thursday before returning to the White House for a joint news conference.

Obama ate a traditional cheeseburger, while Medvedev added jalepenos, mushrooms and onions to his. The pair shared an order of fries, according to the White House. No word on which superpower paid for the meal. (Update, 1:47 p.m.: It was Obama's treat.)

Yeah, and the aforementioned Secret Service detail was our treat.

Seriously, I don't know if this place delivers, but even if they normally don't, I'm sure they would have made an exception after getting a phone order from the White House.

Well, that didn't take long

Jerry Brown pretty much immediately went Godwin on GOP opponent Meg Whitman, and did it pretty stupidly to boot:

"It's like Goebbels," referring to Hitler's notorious Minister of Propaganda. "Goebbels invented this kind of propaganda. He took control of the whole world. She wants to be president. That's her ambition, the first woman president. That's what this is all about."
Now, I don't claim to bed a professional historian or anything, but I don't remember when exactly it was that Goebbels "took control of the whole world."

Oh, and of course, the comments comparing Whitman to an infamous Nazi were "taken out of context." Yeah.

ORLY?

Hot Air Headlines linked to a column from someone I've never heard of by the name of Froma Harrop, which had to do with the fact that Obama isn't a god (I won't even bother to link to his Dem nomination speech, what with healing the sick and lowering the seas), but I found this innaresting:

With all due respect to colleagues, these things aren't happening to Obama. They are happening to the world. Obama's vaunted "good luck" was in campaign politics, a far smaller and more manageable stage than he's playing on today. There has never been a time in world history when stuff wasn't happening.
Um, are you sure you want to go there? Oh, who the fuck am I kidding?

Shaken, not stirred

Hey, maybe Valerie Plame actually was the cream of the crop in terms of our nation's super secret agents after all...

I was recruited by the CIA once, or I might have been. I'm not sure. Because the CIA knows how to make offers that are understood but deniable.
Click here to find out who the International Man of Mystery that made this claim actually is!

Plausible deniability has never sounded quite so...plausible.

Driven to distraction

Well, hey, I guess that while it's comforting to know that in spite of his many, many foreign policy gaffes (inappropriate bows, shitty gifts, outright snubs of the Crowned Heads of Europe, etc.) at least our president isn't distracted by urges to bang his supermodel wife.

Oh, wait.

(Notice there in that Newsweek link that they question Olivia Wilde's position on the list while...well, I think you know where I'm going with this.)

Kids Parents these days

You know, I'm a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It was a great show. It was well-written, action-packed, and featured a bunch of really hot actresses. That said, if I had a daughter, I don't think I'd name her Buffy. A son? Not gonna be named Angel (or Spike, for that matter).

God, I really hate people sometimes.

Holy crap

I'm not a very religious guy, much less a Bible scholar, but I'm pretty sure that it's not cool to compare yourself to Job because you've lost a few acting gigs and have been mocked on the internets.

And, while I again must emphasize that I'm not much of a student of The Good Book, I don't remember the part of Job's story where he begged a bunch of strangers for money.

US Orders Blackout Over North Korean Torpedoing Of Gulf Of Mexico Oil Rig

By: Sorcha Faal, and as reported to her Western Subscribers

A grim report circulating in the Kremlin today written by Russia’s Northern Fleet is reporting that the United States has ordered a complete media blackout over North Korea’s torpedoing of the giant Deepwater Horizon oil platform owned by the World’s largest offshore drilling contractor Transocean that was built and financed by South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd., that has caused great loss of life, untold billions in economic damage to the South Korean economy, and an environmental catastrophe to the United States.

Most important to understand about this latest attack by North Korea against its South Korean enemy is that under the existing “laws of war” it was a permissible action as they remain in a state of war against each other due to South Korea’s refusal to sign the 1953 Armistice ending the Korean War.

…

On the night of April 20th the North Korean Mini Submarine manned by these “suicidal” 17th Sniper Corps soldiers attacked the Deepwater Horizon with what are believed to be 2 incendiary torpedoes causing a massive explosion and resulting in 11 workers on this giant oil rig being killed outright. Barely 48 hours later, on April 22nd , this North Korean Mini Submarine committed its final atrocity by exploding itself directly beneath the Deepwater Horizon causing this $1 Billion oil rig to sink beneath the seas and marking 2010’s celebration of Earth Day with one of the largest environmental catastrophes our World has ever seen.

To the reason for North Korea attacking the Deepwater Horizon, these reports say, was to present US President Obama with an “impossible dilemma” prior to the opening of the United Nations Review Conference of the Parties to the Treat on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) set to begin May 3rd in New York.

Ah another fine conspiracy theory brought to you by the lovely people at what does it mean (sorry no links for loonies).

I can believe that there was a terrorist attack, I can even believe that North Korea might want to try something like this. What I have trouble believing is that if this was a North Korean attack and all this information was out there that it wouldn’t have leaked from someplace besides the Russian Northern Fleet, and that if the Russians were leaking it they wouldn’t have contacted someone a little more reliable than Sorcha Faal, say maybe the NY Times or the Washington Post. Sorcha Faal was also behind a rumor last year the Obama was ordering 100,000 troops deployed. Lew Rockwell’s site (the guy behind the anti-Semitic Ron Paul newsletters) was all over that rumor as was The Classic Liberal, so I am not going to be real surprised if they pick this one up and give it a lot more distribution than it deserves.

Do you have kids in school?

No, I'm not asking because I'd like to buy them for a reasonable price.

(Although, if you want to send me an e-mail discussing terms—no, no, NO. I mean, wait, my parole officer says I'm not supposed to do that kind of thing.)

Anyway, I'm asking because you'd better find out whether or not they're being shown this fucking Marxist trash (the original, not the rebuttal) in their classrooms:

Abuse of power in Maryland

Guy on his motorcycle was speeding and gets busted...by a police officer who is in an unmarked car with no lights or siren, wearing no uniform, shows no badge, and draws his sidearm the second he gets out of the car, and doesn't ID himself as police for several seconds.  There's a police cruiser coming up behind him at the last second.

Blocking someone off with your car like that, failing to ID yourself as police and drawing your weapon the second you step out of the vehicle is a damn good way to get yourself killed, whether that's getting shot by someone with a carry permit or run down by the driver.  Naturally, instead of taking this as a hint to put a muzzle on Officer Aggro McJackass, the Maryland State Police are threatening the motorcyclist with charges of illegal wiretapping/recording, because he had a helmet cam on, and recorded the whole thing, which found its way on teh intarwebs.
