Um, I know I'm not supposed to ask this...

...seeing as how I'm a "Person of Pallor," but, seriously, what's up with the outpouring of grief from the "black community" as far as the death of Michael Jackson is concerned? They had a retrospective of his music at the A.M.E. Church here in L.A. a few days ago, and I've seen countless black people on the news emoting over him and talking about how they're introducing their children (yes, really!) to his music.  Not to mention how Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have managed to get in on this story.

The thing is, well, I'm not the kind of person who's usually hung up on ethnic/racial identity, but has there ever been anyone who has sprinted as far and fast away from who he really was than Michael Jackson?

I think it was Chris Rock who made the joke about Jackson and America being the only place in the world where a poor boy from Gary, Indiana could grow up to be a rich, white woman, but I haven't heard anybody mention anything like that since he died. I know that we're not to speak ill of the dead, but...

...well, I don't know where I'm going with this, really. Should we be colorblind always? Should we look at race when it's sort of weird to do so? Should we all just drink ourselves into oblivion? The answer is probably the latter, but, well, derp. And glug.

Do we get to vote?

Remember the Elvis stamp from a few years ago? Where we got to vote on whether it would depict the "young Elvis" or the "fat Elvis"? I can only hope that if this comes to pass, we get to vote on "young, dynamic pop star who recorded some of the biggest hits of the eighties" or "bleached-out, drug-addicted scarecrow and child molester." I'd go with the latter, personally.

You know, I hate Rev. Al with all the white-hot passion of a million suns going supernova, but I'll be damned if I don't admire his ability to weasel his way into this whole thing.

(Okay, "admire" isn't quite the right word, but you know what I mean.)

In an article from the UK titled "Down the Mississippi," some ignorant Americans bring up "Obama's Muslim background":

"They would listen to him a lot more openly because they don’t think of him as a pure Westernised person. It is a big deal. They can relate to that part of him, the middle name of Hussein, him being brought up in an Asian country.”

You're not supposed to mention that, you knuckledragging redneck troglody—oh, wait...

I guess it's okay to mention his middle name and his experiences under certain circumstances, but not others.

This time, they're upset with the guys who throw fish at the famous Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle:

Asserting that the practice of lobbing fish above the heads of patrons and tourists at the market and other venues is disrespectful to creatures that already have gone through a lot, an animal rights group is protesting plans to stage a flying-fish exhibition at an upcoming national veterinarians conference in Seattle.

Pointing this out is probably futile, but first of all, they're fish, and—bear with me here—they're already dead. I sort of doubt that respect is much of a priority for a dead halibut.

There's an evil Canadian corporation that seems to be set to deprive its trusty retirees of a key benefit:

"There was no consultation, we just received a letter that this is a done deal, which is totally unfair," Bill Bavis, who retired six years ago after 32 years at Molson's in St. John's, Newfoundland, told the Star. "I think with the economic downturn they're trying to take advantage of us, as a way to cut retirees' benefits and justify it."

Hyperbole much?

I haven't said much (if anything) about the George Tiller murder because, frankly (and I don't want to offend anyone here who feels passionately about the subject) abortion isn't one of my main issues. I have qualms about it, sure, and I think Roe is terrible Constitutional law, but it's just not really something I think about a lot.

All of that said, this is just a leeeeetle bit over the top:

A Nebraska abortion provider has likened the murder of fellow late-term abortion Dr. George Tiller to the assassination of this country's most renowned civil rights leader. The Washington Times reports that Dr. LeRoy Carhart says: "This is the equivalent of Martin Luther King being assassinated. This is the equivalent of Pearl Harbor, the sinking of the Lusitanian [sic] and any other major historic event where we've tolerated the intolerable for too long."

Um, really? I have no idea what MLK thought about abortion, but I suspect that as a clergyman, he might have disapproved of it. Especially the late-term variety. But comparing Tiller's murder to the events that plunged our country into two World Wars? Yeah, that's kind of fucking stupid. Dumbass.

In his own remarks, Obama said that denying the fact of the Holocaust is "baseless," "ignorant" and "hateful." If Ahmadinejad didn't recognize himself, surely the rest of the world did, including Iranians who will vote in their country's presidential election this month.

Riiiiiiiight. First of all, I doubt the people of Iran are quite as enamored of Obama's opinions as you are. Secondly, um, the Holocaust denial thing is sort of a feature, not a bug in that particular corner of the world. Only an idiot wouldn't recognize that.

Obama defends the rights of American Muslims

Unlike the evil Booooooosh, who persecuted Muslims and shredded the Constitution...

In today’s speech in Cairo, the President outlined his personal commitment to engagement with Muslim communities, based on mutual respect. He also emphasized that Islam and America are not competing identities and that the U.S. has a long history of defending freedom of faith, including going to court over it if need be. All of these aspects of the American tradition are woven into the story the President referenced of our Justice Department arguing for the right of a Muslim student to wear the hijab to school:

Moreover, freedom in America is indivisible from the freedom to practice one's religion. That is why there is a mosque in every state in our union, and over 1,200 mosques within our borders. That's why the United States government has gone to court to protect the right of women and girls to wear the hijab and to punish those who would deny it. (Applause.)

Yeah, except that he had nothing to do with that. The White House website goes on to mention that the case he's referring to took place in 2004.

Who was president back then? Aw, who cares. That's ancient history.

(Unless he can use that ancient history to score points against a certain someone, that is.)

Some Internet commentary even refers to Roeder as a "Christian terrorist." Let's see: Christian, pro-gun, anti-government, pro-life. Sounds like a Republican, right? Oh, and he's suspected of being an assassin. Connect them dots.

No, it isn't fair. The GOP can't control who joins the party, and Republicans don't have a corner on random crazies. But what the Democrats have that the Republicans lack is a moderating voice to neutralize the party's more strident characters. While Democrats have Obama, Republicans are stuck with the squeakiest wheel du jour.

I'd ask where you were for the last eight years of BDS, assassination fantasies, and "random crazies", but, oh, that's right, you were hanging out with your MSM buddies. Sure, nobody actually pulled the trigger, but I'm not picturing many mourners at your DC cocktail parties had someone done so.

Also, nice to see that you're still crushing on Barry. You should invite David Brooks, Peggy Noonan, and Christopher Buckley over for a slumber party.

Oh, and take a guess as to which incident gets nary a mention in her column. None of the "more strident characters" on the left might have had an influence on that, Kathleen, would they?

Who Knew Snake Bitten Cock In A Pot Was So Popular?

Apparently, it's a big deal in China. So much so, the government there is trying to ban it.

"It's disgusting and really cruel," wrote one poster on the popular portal sina.com.cn.

"Not only is it cruel and blood-thirsty, but totally amoral," the Chongqing Business Daily cited a neighbor to one of the restaurants as saying.

Health authorities in Guangdong have already told restaurants to stop serving "poisonous snake-bitten chicken" and now those in Chongqing have joined in.

"Although nobody has been poisoned, this at the very least is an irregular way of slaughtering poultry," the business newspaper quoted a local health official as saying.
