Shocka! Enviro-weenie Policies Not Popular In Enviro-weenie Strongholds

Yeah, color me shocked. And what is doubly impressive is how the folks in Seattle recently treated attempts to raise the costs of being green.

Plastic bag makers have lobbied hard to defeat the fee, outspending opponents about 15 to 1.

Adam Parmer, a spokesman for the Coalition to Stop the Seattle Bag Tax, said the results show the bag fee was "a costly, unnecessary tax" and the wrong approach to changing behavior.

"Seattle voters have made it clear that this is not the approach they want to take in protecting the environment," he said.

Supporters argue the fee would encourage more reusable bags, cut down on pollution and waste, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"This campaign is about much more than just one decision of the voters," said Rob Gala, a spokesman for Seattle Green Bag campaign, which backed the fee. "It's really about raising the awareness of voters, and we've really accomplished that."{yeah, to the tune of getting your sissy ass kicked all over Seattle-ed.}

Also in Seattle, unpopular Mayor Greg Nickels was narrowly trailing two challengers in his bid for a third term. Sierra Club activist Mike McGinn has a slim lead with 27 percent of the vote. Cell phone executive Joe Mallahan has 26 percent, while Nickels has 25 percent. The top two finishers will advance to the November Election.

Nickels, while prominent nationally for his initiatives to make the city greener, has been dogged locally by criticism of a sometimes heavy-handed style and of the city's {shitty-ed.} response to a December snowstorm that paralyzed Seattle for nearly two weeks.

I may have played around with this article just a bit.

What a shock that green intiatives are not very popular when people have to face up to the costs of them.

"Climate change is very real," [Senator Debbie Stabenow (D., Mich.)] confessed as she embraced cap and trade's massive tax increase on Michigan industry - at the same time claiming, against all the evidence, that it would not lead to an increase in manufacturing costs or energy prices. "Global warming creates volatility. I feel it when I'm flying. The storms are more volatile. We are paying the price in more hurricanes and tornadoes."

Of course, this makes as much sense as every other bit of global warming 'science'.

I don't think the leftards who declared climate change to be of such devastating impact that it could require global military intervention considered the upside: this means we need to grow our military!  Especially given that it looks like we might have to deploy to the Middle East on a large scale - that in itself is probably good for doubling our military funding.  I bet those stupid congressmen who killed the F-22 funding feel like idjits now!

On a side note, WTF is going on with our hurricane season this year?  I thought things were only supposed to get worse after Katrina...

Today's Dose Of Enviro-Weenie Stupidity

Greenies want to fight power production in England using unique methods.

Tesco is sending 5,000 tons of leftover meat a year to be burned to generate electricity for homes, it emerged yesterday.

The supermarket disposes of enough meat that has passed its sell-by date to power 600 homes for a year through the National Grid.

Other major supermarkets plan to follow suit. But animal rights campaigners yesterday said many homeowners would be 'horrified' to learn that their electricity was generated by the 'macabre' recycling scheme {oh, so these shitstains now oppose recycling? Good to know-ed.}.

Tesco has hailed the scheme as part of a 'green' drive which had enabled it to stop sending any of the waste it produces to environmentally damaging landfill sites {And what about the meat? Maybe we should just have Tesco throw rotten meat at the hippies. That would be a fitting.catharsis for my Punch a Hippie habit.-ed.}.

But the campaigners said the environmental benefits were far outweighed by the greenhouse gases produced by all the extra animals unnecessarily reared {he said "reared". Snicker-ed}for slaughter in the first place.

Ok, fuck you right there. What the fuck are Brits going to use to fuel their homes? If not rotten meat, what else? Oh, that's right. They have a shitload of oil in their own backyard, but the armpit raping fabulously foreskinned  assmaggots in the Gaia movement are doing everything they can to fuck this up worse than the final exam at Ted Kennedy's Driving and Scuba Diving School.

Oh well. But at least we have wind power. That's awesomely safe, right? Right?

Uh, no.

At the heart of Dr Pierpont's findings is that humans are affected by low-frequency noise and vibrations from wind turbines through their ear bones, rather like fish and other amphibians. That humans have the same sensitivity as fish is based on new discoveries made by scientists at Manchester University and New South Wales last year. This, she claims, overturns the medical orthodoxy of the past 70 years on which acousticians working for wind farms are using to base their noise measurements. "It has been gospel among acousticians for years that if a person can't hear a sound, it's too weak for it to be detected or registered by any other part of the body," she said. "But this is no longer true. Humans can hear through the bones. This is amazing. It would be heretical if it hadn't been shown in a well-conducted experiment."

In the UK, Dr Christopher Hanning, founder of the British Sleep Society, who has also backed her research, said: "Dr Pierpont's detailed recording of the harm caused by wind turbine noise will lay firm foundations for future research. It should be required reading for all planners considering wind farms. Like so many earlier medical pioneers exposing the weaknesses of current orthodoxy, Dr Pierpont has been subject to much denigration and criticism and ... it is tribute to her strength of character and conviction that this important book is going to reach publication."

Dr Pierpont's thesis, which is to be published in October by K-Selected Books, has been peer reviewed and includes an endorsement from Professor Lord May, former chief scientific adviser to the UK government. Lord May describes her research as "impressive, interesting and important".

Her new material about the impact of turbine noise on health will be of concern to the Government given its plans for about 4,000 new wind turbines across the country. Ed Miliband, the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, has made wind power a central part of his new green policy to encourage renewable energy sources. Another 3,000 are planned off-shore.

Drawing on the early work of Dr Amanda Harry, a British GP in Portsmouth who had been alerted by her patients to the potential health risk, Dr Pierpont gathered together 10 further families from around the world who were living near large wind turbines, giving her a cluster of 38 people, from infants to age 75, to explore the pathophysiology of WTS for the case series. Eight of the 10 families she analysed for the study have now moved away from their homes.

Uh-oh. Fucking imbeciles. This makes me want to go and throw a car battery into a lake just to spite these fools.

This is probably the greatest example of how to fuck with the self righteous cockgobblins who hector us about the cars we drive, and how we need to adopt more "Gaia-Friendly" methods of getting around, especially in those lawnmowers with a roof.

Eco-friendly Smart cars are small enough to be picked up by just a few people and dumped into the Dutch capital's canals, reports De Telegraaf newspaper.

One victim Casper de Jong was woken by police after they found his Smart floating in the waterway outside his apartment.

Mr de Jong said: "Several weeks ago the same thing happened to my companion's Smart. Both cars were a complete write-off."

One Smart sales worker said: "We're not supposed to talk about this because the police don't want the craze to spread but we've had quite a few drowned cars returned to us."

Oh yeah. Just reading this bit of truth to power made me want to go out and punch a hippie, urinate on his hemp blanket to improve the smell, and then throw a car battery into the lake as a celebration.

Remember When The Obamas Planted That Garden At The White House?

Yeah, well it turns out the garden and the vegetables it produced may not be as Hope and Change-y as originally predicted.

Instead, an embarrassed White House admitted today that the plot — whose lettuce, herbs and other produce have been consumed by the first family, visiting dignitaries, local school children and a women's homeless shelter — had tested positive for elevated levels of lead.

A spokeswoman for the White House said the soil in the garden had lead concentrations of 93 parts per million of lead. Health experts say it is safe to raise leafy vegetables in soil with concentrations of 10-50 parts per million, and urban gardens typically have raised lead levels. However, it is advised for young children to be tested for exposure to lead if they play in areas where lead concentrations exceed 100 parts per million. The Environmental Protection Agency puts the threshold for dangerous lead levels at 300 parts per million.

A little environmentalist FAIL for you this evening

I'm sure you've heard this before, I remember hearing about this in both high school and college science classes.  We were all told how we had to control pollution because trace amounts of chemicals in the environment were causing frogs to be deformed, born less one or more legs. 

Well, like most things that environmentalists say, that was utter bullshit.  As it turns out, mutations aren't the cause of the lost leg to begin with, dragonfly nymphs (larvae) are.  What happens is the larvae attack tadpoles in the early stage of a tadpole's development.  The dragonfly larvae will eat the developing legs of a tadpole, the reason being that the legs of a tadpole develop their poison glands in their legs later than their bodies.  It also takes time for the tadpole to develop the regenerative capabilities of a frog, so if a larvae eats the leg at the right stage of development, it won't grow back, many die, but a few make it, and thus, the one legged frogs.

A Message To The UN Envirodorks

"Single use plastic bags which choke marine life, should be banned or phased out rapidly everywhere. There is simply zero justification for manufacturing them anymore, anywhere," said Achim Steiner, executive director of the U.N. Environment Programme. His office advises U.N. member states on environmental policies.

Steiner's declaration accompanied a UNEP report that identifies plastic as the most pervasive form of ocean litter. According to the report, "Plastic, the most prevalent component of marine debris, poses hazards because it persists so long in the ocean, degrading into tinier and tinier bits that can be consumed by the smallest marine life at the base of the food web."

The ban is already being tested in China, where retailers giving out thin bags can be fined up to $1,464. According to one nationwide survey, 40 billion fewer plastic bags were given out in grocery stores after the law's enactment. In addition, Ireland managed to cut single-use plastic bag consumption 90 percent by levying a fee on each bag that consumers use.

In the United States, only San Francisco has completely banned plastic bags. Los Angeles will do so in 2010. Also, Washington, D.C.'s city council is set to vote on a five-cent-a-bag tax later this month. On first reading, the bill passed unanimously. Similar proposals have failed in New York and Philadelphia.

Keith Christman, senior director for the plastics division of the American Chemistry Council, responded that the term "single-use" is misleading because most people actually reuse plastic bags, "for example, to line their trash cans."

"A ban on plastic bags could also cause some unintended consequences," he said. In particular, the increased demand for paper bags would double greenhouse emissions and create "a dramatic increase in waste," Christman said.

Shocka! Green Power Is A Royal Pain In The Ass!

Why am I not surprised by this?

The Devens Enterprise Commission, which regulates the plant and other businesses on what used to be Fort Devens, has already slapped the company with two noise ordinance violations.

“This green-energy company has polluted the neighborhood with noise, and it seems not to be working very hard to correct this,” Perry said.

Evergreen spokesman Chris Lawson disagreed and, after downplaying the noise problem, said the company is “really fully committed to working with the community.”

But that’s not enough for neighbors, who initially thought the noise was related to the massive plant’s construction, which began last July. By January, however, nearby residents realized the noise stemmed from the manufacturing process and began complaining.

“Imagine tuning your radio to a station that gets only static,” said Jay Wallace, co-owner of Dunroven Farm. “Then imagine having to listen to that 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That’s what we are living with.”

Since the neighbors complained, the company has installed sound-dampening devices, replaced defective blower units, and changed its gas delivery schedules, Lawson said. The company has also hired a noise consultant.

But neighbors say the noise problem hasn’t gotten any better and that could mean trouble for Evergreen.

The plant’s temporary occupancy permit expires this month, and the enterprise commission has told neighbors the plant won’t get a permanent occupancy permit until the noise levels drop, Wallace said. The company also faces possible daily fines for noise violations.

How about Wen Jiabao attempting to torpedo the US economy by buying Treasury bills by the boatload, then saying he thinks they're risky?

Unsurprising

Unvaccinated children are 23 times more likely to get whooping cough.

75% of infants under the age of six months that get whooping cough have to be hospitalized.  The whooping cough vaccine is administered from two to eighteen months in five doses, but isn't considered fully into effect until the vaccination schedule has been completed.  Whooping cough is highly contagious.

So, idiots who choose to let your little germ factories run around spewing bacteria all over everyone they come in contact with, think about the infants you're hospitalizing.  Think about someone other than yourself and your family and your personal need to be oh-so-different and cutting-edge and rejecting of conventional wisdom.

I didn't know hippies liked vodka

Um, that's really more of a salad than a cocktail. I think I'll just go ahead and continue swilling mine straight out of the 1.75 liter plastic jug which, no, I do not recycle. Take that, you Marin County assholes!

The Ironing Is Delicious

Well, it appears as though some of the policies regarding clearing brush in order to prevent forst fires in California sparked a forest fire in California.

Fire officials said someone, or possibly a group of people, was clearing vegetation on what appeared to be private land near the trail around the time the fire erupted Tuesday.

"Any time you use any power tool, there's always a possibility, especially if the conditions are right," said Joe Waterman, the overall fire commander from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Some Santa Barbara County residents recently received annual notices advising them they had until June 1 to clear potentially hazardous brush, county fire Capt. Glenn Fidler said.

It was not immediately clear whether the blaze originated in an area targeted by such a notice.

Officials declined to comment further about the type of power tool that may have been used, or if anyone could face charges.

The fire has destroyed 77 homes, damaged 22 others and forced the evacuation of approximately 30,000 people to safer ground.

Hillary Clinton has an impressive resume. Former First Lady, former Senator from New York, current Secretary of State. And somehow, in the midst of all that, she managed to become a Climatologist:

"The science [of global warming] is unambiguous and the logic that flows from it is inescapable," Clinton said.

"Climate change is a clear and present danger to our world that demands immediate attention. Facts on the ground are outstripping worse-case scenario models that were developed only a few years ago."

I'm sorry to interrupt Dr. Clinton here, but I'd just like to mention at this point that it's a balmy 66 degrees and slightly cloudy here today. Although it did get pretty hot here last week, and my air conditioner crapped out...OH MY GOD WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!
