Harry Potter and the IPCC

A bunch of wizards scientists are now saying that Dark Magicks Global Warming could result in Gaia's Mighty Wrath volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

Yes, really, these people are saying that stuff in the air can cause things below the earth's crust to happen.

1 I've had exactly that conversatioon with someone.
You see, since the air is so much warmer it warms the interior of the Earth causing more...uhhh..stuff to happen.

So even though it hasn't warmed in over 10 years, global worming is wreaking havoc on the whole solar system.

You know how the Sun has been largely inactive during the cooling period? Well, correlation does not imply causation.
In fact, what's been happening is that global worming has affected the Earth's magnetic field, and since the Earth is the center of the solar system, it's affected the magnetic field of the Sun and changed how it acts.

It's all very scientifical, your wingnut brain just doesn't have the ability to grasp it.

Actually, the research is real and the mechanism is theoretically plausible. Some ice sheets are up to 2 miles thick - think about it - that affects the functional depth of structures in the crust underneath.  So glacier retreat can change the pressure felt by the magma (only in the area under the glacier).  Also changes in the glaciers can be reasonably hypothesized to stress the crust under them (I'd think this would be as much an effect of glacier advance as of retreat).

Of course, this only effects volcanic activity under glaciers, would be an effect over hundreds of years even assuming unrelenting warming, does not address whether the average retreat of the glaciers today is in any way out of line with patterns over eons, does not address focal discrepancies in glacier retreat, does not address how much global warming is going on, how much is anthropogenic, how much of even that we can do anything about, how best to go about it (all independent crucial questions the warmists ignore), or the countervailing cooling effect of volcano ash release!

So it's silly for "journalists" to use the current Icelandic volcanic eruption (which even the vulconologists who did this research state has nothing to do with a warming effect because the ice above this volcano is too thin) to raise alarms about global warming, but reflexive mockery of the whole idea of warming affecting at least some volcanoes is probably the wrong way to go.

3 I gotta disagree there Gracchus.

The Earth is freaking huge, there's many, many millions of tons of dirt, water, rock and living things above any point on the mantle, adding a couple miles of ice is like putting a ten pount weight on top of your car. Sure it'll affect it, but it won't be noticeable.

So saying that global worming affects the below the crust just doesn't make any scientific sense, it does make religious sense if you think of Gaia as a vengeful god wreaking plagues on an imPrius world.
