The mask slips

Our socialism...let us show you it:

House Democrats responded to President's Bush's call for Congress to lift the moratorium on offshore drilling. This was at an on-camera press conference fed back live.

Among other things, the Democrats called for the government to own refineries so it could better control the flow of the oil supply.

Oh, yeah. That's a fantastic idea. Witness the economic genius, in particular, of Maurice Hinchey (D-Hugo Chavez):
We (the government) should own the refineries. Then we can control how much gets out into the market.
With these people in charge, we are well and truly fucked. Way to go, "permanent GOP majority."

Here, wash your mind out with some Ronnie Raygun quotes.

'Of the four wars in my lifetime, none came about because the U.S. Was too strong.'

6 Talk about not understanding things. First the point was to fund NEW oil refineries since the industry hasn't built any new ones in 30 years.  They aren't suggesting taking over the existing ones.

There are only a limited number of existing aging refineries in the US. So every time one has a fire (like a few weeks ago) or demand goes up the supply get tighter to the public, but the price paid for the crude stays the same.

Second: Limited and aging refineries are now in the realm of national security.

Third: Every time someone mentioned federal regulation or corrections the right wing screamed.

Well what do you want?

If the oil companies had the sense that there would be open competition then they might change the game and invest in the infrastructure, but since regulation seems socialist too then the oil companies just limit the size of the spigot and you get prices higher then the actual raw supply suggests.

You want free market then sometimes you have to interject into the system a correction because the oil companies see no reason to improve the means of refining and delivery.

7 First off, muffler, even if you're right (which I doubt sincerely having seen Hinchey's comments) about the idea being about government ownership of just new refineries, how is that the government's business?  Does the energy Department start refining crude oil into petroleum?  If so, who does it buy the crude from?  How does it set the price for the gas it refines?  Are you beginning to see the problems here?

Secondly, you talk about there being "only a limited number of existing aging refineries in the US."  Well, no shit, Sherlock!  But I can damn well guarantee you that it wasn't the oil companies or people on the right who were screaming "Not In My Back Yard!" every time a new one was proposed.  Nope, that clusterfuck was caused by people like you and Hinchey.

Finally, you write "Every time someone mentioned federal regulation or corrections the right wing screamed."  You're damn right, though I don't see your point.  You seem to think that the government owning new oil refineries will amount to "open competition."  What the fuck are you smoking, son?  Because it must be some good shit.  But you might want to put down the bong and read a little bit about economics.
