I was just barely a stupid teenager then, and I knew next to nothing about international politics, but I had watched the demonstrations on CNN (which wasn't then the joke that it is today) but I knew that the people gathered in Beijing were fighting for their freedom. When I saw what was happening to the people there, when the troops and the tanks moved in and the whole thing disintegrated into a bloody mess, well, I cried. I knew that something horrible had happened to people who were standing up for something that they believed in. I knew that something horrible had happened. Even though I was ignorant of the evils of communisim at the time, I knew that it was wrong.

I remember this very well. At the time I was living off campus at the University of Missouri and my next door neighbors were Chinese graduate students studying medicine and nursing. They had friends at the Beijing protests. We followed the protests closely everyday and I will never forget the horror and grief they expressed when the Communist government crushed the democracy protests.
