Interesting theory on the purpose of the human appendix

The theory suggests the appendix may possibly serve as a safe haven for beneficial intestinal bacteria during times of sickness.  They also suggest the reason that there is no perceivable negative effect when an appendix is removed is because in industrialized nations, we rarely, if ever have major widespread intestinal disease outbreaks, and modern medicine on top of that.  Interesting article.
