Haig RIP

Alexander Haig is dead. (link via Ace, but I saw the news on TV)

He did some truly great things, but he will always be remembered for his statement that he was in control when Ronnie Raygun was shot.

I'll always remember that, I saw it on TV and I laughed my ass off.
I have to admit, it was a bit of hilarity on a not so pleasant day.

I understand why he did it, but it was still just funny.

1 On the day Reagan was shot, I have always thought that Haig meant that he was the ranking man on the ground at the whitehouse until the Vice President could get there.  He did not mean, i think, that he was in charge of the government.  If Haig were a democratic cabinet member he would have been given a chance to clarify the statement.

3 I saw it, he was all nervous/excited. He claimed afterward he was just trying to calm a fearful nation.

Problem was, we weren't fearful. Especially after he "calmed our fears"
It was hysterical, I laughed long before our media betters told me it was okay to laugh.

I agree our media betters would have spun this differently if it was a Dem, but it was funny all on its own.

4 When I saw the movie "Down Periscope" when Rob Schneider was explaining why he should take over the boat, all I could think of was Haig.

5 I think the most misunderstood thing about what Haig did was why he did it.  His primary concern was sending a message to the Russians that we still had a finger on the button and that any first strike they thought they could get away with would still be met with Mutually Assured Destruction.

Because I guarantee someone in the Soviet Union did consider it, even just a little bit, after Reagan was shot.

6 I absolutely agree, but it was still funny.
It was funny because of how he looked, not what he did.
