More like the appropriately punished boy-rapers of the mujahideen.

Unless there is more to this bomb that they haven't told the public, the worst that would happen would be a large car fire. Here's why: without a proper detonator, none of that stuff is going to explode. Gasoline will cause a fireball, but only if you have some kind of explosive to blow up the container and cause a spark to ignite the fuel-air mixture. Without that, it is just going to burn. As for the propane tanks, they have a release valve, so unless they managed to disable that, the worst it will do is shoot out a 3 foot flame. As for the fertilizer, it sounds like this guy flunked out of terrorist school, because everyone knows that you need the right kind to make it go all explodey. (I'm not going to list it, after making sure I was right with a few google searches, I'm sure Janet Napeltano is sending the Feds to my door, no need to provoke them further)
The fact is, this is one person (or at most 3, I have to hedge my bets) trying to do his best Tim McVeigh impression, who didn't even spend 5 minutes on the internet to find out what is readily available. I know that the terrorists are a bunch of fuck-ups, but you have to give them some credit.

I don't know about the fertilizer, but if they had managed to get the propane tanks to explode thereby creating a huge fuel-air mixture and then the fireworks went off, it might have been horrific.
The fumes from the gasoline would have contributed to the mixture. It looks as if they didn't get enough air in the mix.
One thing about this, people learn. The next attempt from them might work out better.
I would say I doubt it's the Taliban, I bet whoever really did it is probably pissed off at them for trying to take "credit".

Given that the tape claiming responsibility was made a day PRIOR to the bombing attempt... I'm not so sure it wasn't them.

I stand corrected. It just seemed a reach for some Pakistani terrorist group to attack Time Square.
But then, it was equally absurd for some Afghan terror group to do so and we know how that worked out.
Huh, the Taliban was involved in both.
Since it's likely they did do it, any takers on whether or not the Oministration will ignore and hide it if they find they got some help from say Iran, Syria or Saudi Arabia?
I will say one thing about jihadis, they understand what many westerners have a problem understanding, you can argue about how you want your civilization goes after you ensure it does go.
Sunni can work with Shiite against the Satans (Big and Little), but lefties can't work with us against terrorists.
James Lileks made that point about Tony Blair, Blair understood that you have to be a warmonger against evil.
