Praise where praise is due

I may have my doubts about McCain, but I think he is finally running a smart campaign.  First he hit Barack Obama yesterday for choosing to put winning a campaign above winning a war.  Now his campaign is making two smart moves (h/t on both to The Corner).  First, he's countering Sen. Obama's speech in Berlin by reaching out to Berliners himself:

In the latest effort to counter-program Obama’s tour of Europe and the Middle East, the Republican National Committee will air radio ads promoting John McCain’s candidacy in three different Berlins: Berlin, New Hampshire; Berlin, Pennsylvania; and Berlin, Wisconsin.
Eh, maybe a little bit hacky, but it made me laugh nonetheless.  Because I'm a hack, mostly.  Make sure you check out the comments at the link, by the way.  I didn't know Keith Olbermann had so many screen names.

McCain might also consider taking Rush Limbaugh's advice during his visit to New Orleans:
The campaign has been discussing having McCain visit an offshore oil rig during his visit, but it's not certain whether that is still on the agenda. A campaign aide would only say that McCain is planning to do "an event in the region" Thursday.
Sounds like a good idea to me.  Now, if he'd just accompany Gov. Palin on a visit to ANWR so he could change his mind on that issue, too.

Update: Looks like he's not only canceled the oil rig trip, he might be cancelling the New Orleans trip altogether.  Lame.

Is Rep. John Murtha being out-raised by his challenger?

It seems to be true, but with a few caveats:

A Republican challenger to Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania has raised more money than the incumbent in recent months, but also has more debt and has raised less overall.

William Russell, a former Army lieutenant colonel who relocated to Murtha's district to run against him, raised nearly $670,000 in the fundraising quarter that ended June 30.

That's interesting. If you feel like helping Russell rid the House of Representatives of one of it's corrupt members, donate to his campaign here.

Update: It looks like Michelle Malkin was a little bit ahead of me. Her new article is about this House race and it's worth a read. Although this is a little bit groanworthy (emphasis mine):

“The incredible story about Bill’s campaign is that the $15 and $25 contributions are coming in from all over Pennsylvania and every corner of the country,” Luksik noted on the Russell Brigade website (www.russellbrigade.com). “This is K-Street versus Main Street. These are patriotic families expressing support for soldiers, sailors and Marines, and people saying they’ve had enough of the old ‘pay-to-play’ culture in the Capitol. That’s what’s fueling this campaign.”

Hmmm...who else do we know that uses that kind of rhetoric?

Black Gold, Alaska Tea

I don't know where DPUD hides that siren graphic but we've got another big fucking GOP win:

The Bush administration didn’t waste much time after its lifting of the executive ban on off-shore drilling to make its second big gesture towards the oil markets. Late yesterday, the Bureau of Land Management opened 3.9 million acres of land in Alaska for drilling and exploration.

Fucking fantastic! Look for the price of oil to drop another 10 to 20 dollars as speculators begin to speculate that the United States might be back in the oil business. Also, as retarded as sending an envoy to Iran seems geopolitically, economically it may have been a really intelligent plan. President Bush may have just single-handedly popped the oil bubble.

Too optimistic? You tell me.

More good drilling news out of Utah

Remember Jason Chaffetz?  He just defeated amnesty shill and Rep. Chris Cannon in the GOP primary for Utah's 3rd district.  He's also headed north to Alaska for a few days:

Congressional candidate Jason Chaffetz will join several other Republican contenders on a trip to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge next week to see first hand where some have proposed drilling for purported vast oil deposits.

[...]

"Energy has become the No. 1 issue and I want to see firsthand part of the solution," Chaffetz said Wednesday.

I don't know Cannon's stance on ANWR, but it is certainly nice to have a candidate that is pro-active enough to visit the site.  And if Mr. Chaffetz is reading this moronblog for some reason, I just want him to know that he can expect to see an unsolicited cover letter and resume from me in a few days.

Huckabee tells CNN that he isn't in the running to be VP.  That's okay, Hucktard and his supporters can go on supporting and funding corrupt tools like Don Young.  (h/t)

Watch.

Fred Thompson: Wes Clark Is A Cock

Srsly!

I am disappointed that Wes Clark chose to allow himself to be used this way. He really shouldn’t have. It too easily invokes the image of a bantam rooster trying to belittle an American eagle.

I miss The Fred.

Good for McCain

It seems that Sen. John McCain is going to meet with the president of the Log Cabin Republicans soon.

I think this is bad for John McCain, which is unfortunate, but good for the GOP in general.  There are plenty of gay Republicans out there - moderate ones, libertarian ones, conservative ones, some who don't even agree with gay marriage - and I don't think ignoring that fact is particuarly helpful.

The only thing that bothers me about this is that the LCR, organizationally speaking, tends to be of the thought that the reason the GOP loses elections is because they aren't moderate enough.  But, then again, if we're going to complain about people adehring to that train of thought, we should start with the head of the NRCC, not the Log Cabin Republicans.

Another successful RINO hunt!

This time in Utah.  Open borders shill Rep. Chris Cannon lost his primary battle to political newcomer Jason Chaffetz.  The vote was 60%-40%:

The organization built by Chaffetz and Scott overcame a large gap in campaign cash that grew in the final days before the vote. Cannon's fundraising machine raked in $86,000 in large donations over the last dozen days, according the Federal Elections Commission Web site. Over the same time period, Chaffetz gathered just $6,300.

The new cash put Cannon at nearly $740,000 for the two-year election cycle, with Chaffetz at just more than $170,000.

That's interesting.  There's a similar situation in Alaska with Sean Parnell and Don Young.  I hope it ends up the same way.

Reached for comment, McCain spokesperson Juan Hernandez said the following:  "Sen. McCain expresses dismay that the Republicans of Utah's 3rd Congressional district let their hatred of brown people cloud their better judgment.  Hopefully, if he wins in November, Mr. Chaffetz can put aside his irrational fear or undocumented workers and work with the McCain administration."

Angelina Jolie is deciding whether or not she truly hates the black community

Clint Eastwood comes through again:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Clint Eastwood is one of our most famous Republicans. Did you talk politics with him on the set?

ANGELINA JOLIE: Actually, we don't disagree as much as you'd think. I think people assume I'm a Democrat. But I'm registered independent and I'm still undecided. So I'm looking at McCain as well as Obama. Clint can teach me about things domestically and I'm more aware of some things internationally. So it was less a debate and more things we found interesting. But for the first few weeks I was just too nervous to get into any deep conversation!
Interesting. The McCain campaign must be scurrying like mad to get a vial of his blood to her.

I don't really care that much who she votes for, although I'd be glad to have her on board. However, it does make me more optimistic that the long-awaited film version of Atlas Shrugged won't be as filled with suck as I imagined.

Lou Barletta has to be enjoying this

Paul Kanjorski seems to like the taste of his own shoes.  Via Hotair, we get this great video of Kanjorski being confronted by a constituent.  Kanjorski shows his political savvy,

Can someone explain to me how this incompetent boob managed to be one of the few Democrats make a seat gain during the Reagan landslide elections?  In any case, Kanjorski's making a lot of unforced errors, and he faces possibly his toughest challenge in Lou Barletta, who now carries some national recognition and has grassroots support for his tough stance on illegal immigration, so maybe finally conservatives have some good news.  I hope Chris Hackett can take PA 10 as well, maybe conservatives can reclaim the northeast quadrant of the state this year.  I'm not expecting Obama to do well here unless he overruns and routs McCain with his organization, so that should help too.

____

Oh, and since we're on the topic of political incompetence, what the hell is this?  Is Bush purposely trying to drive his approval numbers into the ground?

Senator Jim DeMint creates conservative PAC

DeMint recognizes that the GOP is hemorrhaging funds because of their rampant RINOism and selling out, and is offering an alternative.  His PAC will only give to those who are faithful to conservative principles, and I think I might really like where he's going with this,

Most politicians’ leadership PACs dole out relatively small contributions to a broad swath of candidates to build a constituency for the lawmaker who runs the committee. The direct donations they make are limited to $10,000 per campaign per election cycle. DeMint said he would prefer to inject large chunks of money into unlimited “independent expenditures” -- spending that is not coordinated with the campaign in any way -- on a handful of worthy candidates. Because it is independent of the campaign, there is no restriction on the amount that can be spent on a race. He envisions dumping hundreds of thousands of dollars into ads, literature, phone banks, etc for each of three or four races each cycle for maximum impact.

That's what needs to be done.  You're never going to gain influence if you keep giving funds to the same RINOs year after year, but we can't just walk away entirely either.  If you can't storm the castle, then lay siege and sap the castle walls. This makes me a tad concerned he'll hedge himself when certain RINOs need to be sent packing, Says DeMint about the possibility of having to go on RINO hunts,

“I hope that doesn’t happen where we have to make a decision between a colleague and someone on the outside,”

Is he saying that to calm the RINOs he's stuck dealing with now, or is he really hesitant to do what needs to be done?  I would love to know what he thought of Andy Harris' takedown of the RINO in his district, before Harris won. Moar from DeMint,

DeMint said he understands the need for moderates in the party, particularly in states where conservatives would have difficulty competing. But he believes the GOP’s platform should be conservative and that an influx of conservatives would help the party refashion the kind of clear agenda that has been lost in an effort to ensure party moderates can vote with the party.

“In order to accommodate everyone, we have become nothing,” he said.

Moderates can be a royal pain in the ass, and they often undeniably suck ass, but we're always going to have to deal with them to an extent when a huge part of our nation is now made up of Marxists and statists.  However, we're now in a situation where we have RINO tools like Lindsey Graham in South Carolina, and facing no competition from real conservatives!  South Carolina!  We should have some asskicking right wing nut in that chair, not sniveling McCain toadie Graham.  An eeevil right winger who makes Harry Reid's trousers dingy with one angry stare, not this douche.

I get that you're gonna have to have a RINO in certain districts, but the RINOs and kleptocrats we've allowed to fester in seats that should be occupied by solid conservatives have proven to be a highly destructive and a disaster, and we need to rectify it.

Speaking of RINO's...Wistful for Huck?  Rich Lowry has lost his fucking mind.

bullet dodged? ron paul to hold his own rEVOLutionary convention in minneapolis

Here we thought the Democrats might get away with no chaos while we get  stuck with the rEVOLutionaries causing mischief during the GOP Convention.  Maybe not.  As long as the GOP Convention people can keep the Paulnut delegates on a leash, most of the rest of them should be over at the Ron Paul convention comparing foil headgear and talking about Trilats, NAU, neocon conspiracies and the gold standard.

sarah palin to be vp?

Hmm, this is interestingI like Palin, and she gets big kudos for being a Republican with a spine, an endangered species these days.  Yeah, choosing her weakens McCain's inexperience argument against Obama a bit, and there is a limit to how much she'll do in terms of bringing a state, but I agree with Allah, McCain needs a fresh face to go with his run, some counter to the "stodgy ol' whitey party" narrative, and someone who isn't going to piss off a lot of conservatives.  Palin would be a decent choice.

Besides, she'd fit in well here in Pennsylvania,

up the down ticket

Since most of us think McCain sucks, we ought to compile a list of decent candidates to support, I've gone over some of these candidates before, but we could use a refresher and some additions to the list.  If you have any candidates who are good conservatives in need of support, drop a comment and let us know.

So, I've got four names off the top of my head, I'll have to look into the archives to find some more, I'm from PA, so three of them are in PA, and one from MD, but if you've got some more, that'd be great.

Lou Barletta, in District 11, in Northeast PA.  You may remember Barletta as the mayor of Hazleton, PA.  Hazleton was one of the first cities to impose tough sanctions and enforcement on illegal immigration and businesses who hired them.  Hazleton did and continues to do the job the federal government refuses to do because of Barletta.  He won reelection in a landslide, a testament to popular support of his performance.  And you have to love a Republican who will take a piss on McCain's shoes for his Amnesty policy.  I bet that has the PA GOP gnashing their teeth.

Chris Hackett, in District 10, in Northcentral PA.  Hackett was a businessman before jumping into politics.  Unlike his primary opponent, Hackett was opposed to pork, and is focusing his campaign on the obscene amount of wasteful spending coming out of DC.  The GOP lost D10 in 2006 to scandal, but is a solidly conservative district, and we should be able to reclaim it.

Glenn Thompson, District 5, Central PA.  Glenn faced a tough field in the primary, with several very wealthy businessmen who put a ton of cash into ads and campaigning.  In particular, a somewhat ham-handed and sleazy guy named Matt Shaner.  Glenn had the least funding and was the most low-key of those running, but still won.  Joe at Alabama in Between favored Thompson over the other candidates, and I trust his judgment.  Thompson should be able to take the seat from what I've seen Joe report, his opponent is a dunce, I guess, but he'd be a good candidate to support too.

Andy Harris, in District 1, Maryland.  Harris defeated the sitting Congressman in the Primary, who was a total RINO of the Lincoln Chafee mold.  Unfortunately for Harris, he now has to face the Democrat who now has at least one of the RINOs top campaign workers working against him now too.  Conservatives are always told to shut up, sit down, eat the turd sandwich and like it, RINOs refuse to do it and go Vichy.  Let's make them eat one here.

Toni Gilhooley, District 17, PA.  Conservative Belle suggested her, and I think she'd be a big improvement over Democrat Tim Holden.  PA might be a good place to look at for downticket moves this year, Obama is not gonna do well here, and there are a few seats that Blue Dogs and pro-2nd or pro-life Dems have taken in earlier elections, but with the potential for a weak presidential candidate performance here, maybe we can ride that wave.
