Dear Prop. 8, From 48

Chill.  The Fuck.  Out.

You lost.  Sorry.  The people spoke and they didn't agree with you.  It sucks.  Trust us, we know.  We're about to have not only a President we don't like but a massive, unicorn-eyed cult of followers to contend with.

What you need to do is the same thing we're going to need to do.  Relax, regroup and retry.  Going into full-on psycho mode is only going to alienate you and your cause from the average voter.  Attacking minority and religious groups that are whole-sale against gay marriage isn't going to convince them you are right and it certainly isn't painting you as 'the victim' in this situation.

What you need to do is preach freedom and convince these people that, while they are against it personally, they shouldn't be imposing their opinion legally.  You should try to find ways to prove that the homosexual community and lifestyle aren't hostile and damaging to religion.  It might be smart to attempt not being hostile and damaging to religion as a first step in this process.

In the end, I'm just a touch more on your side than on the "I completely don't give a shit at all" side so I hope you guys succeed.  But you need to succeed the same way movements have succeeded throughout American history.  By convincing your fellow Americans that you are correct.

After all, what do Americans hate more than being told what to do?

1      Let me guess.  You're a libertarian.  It's good to be reminded that libertarians and conservatives see the world very differently.
Great advise for the gays.  But I think they are in the middle of a tantrum so they aren't ready to listen to reason.  I think demographics are on their side.  UNLESS all of those illegal aliens get that amnesty and then vote.  Then it will be another generation or two before gay marriage has any life outside of judicial fatwas.
I've got to say that I've never seen such a childish and classless reaction to a fair and free election.

I suppose I'm on the libertarian side.  I certainly believe the power of the state should not be used to impose behaviors on the population at large.  Liberty, to me, is more important than anyone's opinion about the lives of other people.

After that, I think I agree with you on every other statement.

4 I'm considering asserting Absolute Moral Authority here and ranting about how these reactions impact my life.  Short version, it ain't pretty.  The sad thing is that I've known for a long time that what will throw me back in the closet are the antics of the activists in the gay community, not the Evangelicals.

5 Once strong emotion gets involved, there's simply no talking to many people, regardless of sexual orientation.  I'm at the point with many communities where I just shrug and get on with my life.

Well, Alex, you'd probably have much more intelligent things to say on the matter than I do.  As I said, this issue barely registers for me compared to nearly every other one but I know where I fall generally.

Mostly I'm just irriated when I see a political movement sawing its own foot off to save its toe.

I can't imagine how much it must suck to actually care about how this turns out.

P.S. Also, alex, did you read the Classical Values post about how the "we would prefer to stay in the closet" portion of the homosexual community is constantly railroaded by the "loud and proud" portion since they obviously can't come out and protest as "in the closet gay people."

I thought it was interesting because I'd never thought of that aspect (if it exists in any large quantity, I don't know) of the community before.  The more I actually care to read about it the more confusing and land-mine strewn it becomes.

7 Thanks for the head's up, I'll have to go read that.  The only thing I'm really militant about re:  gay rights is that outing is wrong.  Period.  End of story.  Anyone who does it should DIAF.  I'm looking at you, Perez Hilton.

8 I'm pretty adamant about that myself.  Particularly when hypocritical douchenozzles on the left do it "ironically" to force these people into a public lifestyle they don't desire.

Motherfuckers.  Of course, the left are the most common source of this kind of political outing.  Because of the "hypocricy" of a right-wing homosexual.

I wish there was even a shred of intellectual consistency on the left.  Just one.  Of course, when you only believe in your own desires, that's pretty tough.

9 I think outing is a really rude way of telling someone, "I want you to be even more miserable than I was when I came out."

From your lips to God ears, it's utterly maddening, isn't it?

The only thing I'd add to it is you'd be surprised (well, probably not) how much the average, ill-informed, voter is just as inconsistentas the most unhinged barking-mad moonbat.

It's really hysterical talking to relatively a-political people that votred for Obama and just how easy it is to tie them into rhetorical knots because, deep down, not only are they not really sure why they voted for O! but they also don't really have any firm political/ideological convictions that goes beyond "what's in it for me?" even though they'll swear up and down they really only have the downtrodden in mind (as if any of these people actually know a genuinely down and out soul) or some other braindead claptrap they picked up from that day's Oprah/Ellen/Dr. Phil ep.

Christ, it's enough to drive me to drink, drugs and acts of homocidal malfeasance (but it's all for the children, so it's OK!)
