The Disconnect Between J-School And Working In A Newsroom On Display

As many of you know by now, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, where the editor dropped the now-infamous "Decider" line, is going belly up. And as the curtain goes down, many of the folks there are writing blog posts on what is goin on.

Well, one post sent my irony meter through the roof. Food Reporter Rebekah Denn gave her notes from her intern days on how to be a good journalist.

Her advice?

1. Work hard.
2. Be serious.
3. Be eager.
4. Read the paper.
5. Remember you're a rookie.
6. Be top-notch at everything.
7. Talk to lots of people.
8. Get the story.
9. Do things quickly.
10. Have clean copy.
11. Triple-check facts.
12. Never make the same mistake twice.
13. Take editing well.
14. Come up with ideas.
15. Do lots of stories and lots of kinds.
16. Be outgoing.
17. Demand feedback.
18. You are responsible for yourself.
19. Don't kick the waterboy.
20. Look at the map.
21. Know the folks you work with – who to go to (for different things).
22. Listen.
23. Pick your battles.
24. Don't be left out.
25. Get comfortable walking in editors' offices.
26. Keep copies.
27. Be clear.
