Odds are very against us
Between the media's open advocacy for Obama and what now looks to be widespread fundraising fraud in the Obama campaign, a story that will be suppressed by the media ferociously, we're going to have a hell of a time competing.
We can't withdraw though, which I see a lot of people wanting to do or doing...
I know that it's in the conservative nature to wash our hands of it all and withdraw with the hope that the whole corrupt mass will just devour itself and burn out, while doing our best to shut out the rest as best we can. Conservatives tend to turn inward, liberals lash out viciously, which we've all learned over the past eight years.
The worthless RINOs, the vile Kleptocrats, the Beltway snobs, the corporate sellouts, the Bush-led government expansion, the endless caving or conspiring with the Democrats, we're all tired of them, we'd all love to see them driven out of DC, then out of the conservative movement and maybe the GOP itself. I get the argument that says just let them self-destruct and rebuild, anyone who reads this site with any regularity knows that I've spent much of the election arguing that, and going on what facts we had at the time, I thought that was the best course of action. The facts on the ground have changed, and my opinion with it.
I knew Obama was going to be bad news, but he, the media and his cultists are turning into something truly disturbing. The combination of Obama's rank Marxism and willingness to disregard ethics or law pushed me into being solidly against letting the GOP collapse. Obama's (or Axelrod's) massive astroturfing campaign, both the videos and endless "concerned Conservative Christian" comments, threatening lawsuits to challenge broadcast licenses of television stations who played NRA ads, the Missouri "Truth Squads", the supremely creepy Obamajugend ad (professionally produced, BTW), the fundraising fraud and relentless bias noted above, and the endless, rabid, gratuitous attacks on Gov. Palin have convinced me that any benefit a rout of the corrupt, useless vermin assholes heading up the GOP (and yes, the GOP leadership are largely corrupt, useless vermin assholes) would be eclipsed by the fact that the Democrats are turning into a bizarre fascistic movement.
I'm not using the term fascistic lightly. They're letting their inner authoritarian out in a big way, and I don't think they're going to stop, shame and fear of a backlash isn't going to contain them anymore, not like it had, and they're only going to get worse. Pandora's box is open. I'd rather not let them have the force of law behind their movement anymore than they already do, which means we have to win, even with a no-good RINO dirtbag like McCain. Admittedly with McCain we're only slowing their advance, given that he's practically a Democrat anyway, but we need to buy ourselves time to rebuild if possible. We can't dismiss the possibility that the left will use the force of law to try and prevent us from organizing anymore, not after the Missouri Truth Squads story and trying to silence the NRA.
I think this VP debate this coming Thursday is going to be of major importance. For most conservatives, the key question is still, "is it better to let the GOP crash and burn and rebuild, or prop up the bloated, worthless GOP for now and use it as a shield till we can rebuild?" Having Gov. Palin on the ticket gives conservatives a reason to choose the latter.
If she fails or is proven unready, this is going to be one brutal election. Palin (or her potential, however you choose to look at it) is a major part of what keeps the base from flipping back to "let the GOP sink" mode. The Beltway set's often obnoxious pessimism and grumbling isn't doing anything to improve things, either. If she can't overcome the hurdle (which the Beltway set has helped build), it's going to be a major demoralizer for conservatives, and may well cost the GOP the election.
McCain can do more as well. I agree with WLS of Patterico's post here, short of Obama imploding or the Obama cultists and media scaring people away, McCain has to make drastic changes. The "us vs. them" populism is only going to take him so far, and it won't likely be far enough. I think the approach WLS is arguing for is a great one. As WLS says, McCain needs to drop the collegiate Congress bullshit and start hammering corruption from the Beltway set. All of them, by name, both parties with the recognition that he'd be burning many bridges in the Senate and House and elsewhere, with the recognition that he'd never be welcomed by the Beltway set again. He needs to tie Obama to that corruption, he needs to exploit the fact the Obama will never sever his ties to corrupt Democrats. Hammer, hammer away. This combined with some strong showings by Gov Palin would at the very least make the Obama campaign sweat.
Last, we all need to do more, if possible. If nothing else, call your local GOP apparatus and demand campaign signs. Volunteer if possible, be it phone banks or knocking on doors. And it doesn't have to just be work through the GOP. If you can't stomach helping the GOP directly, you can make a positive effort through groups like Citizens Against Gov't Waste, the Club for Growth, the NRA, pro-life organizations and any other organization.
Don't forget the down ticket (nice to see that the big bloggers finally caught up to Vinty!)people too, if you can't bring yourself to help McCain, maybe there's someone in your state that can be helped, I know that we have some good candidates for the House here in PA. Barletta and Hackett are both worth supporting here if you can't find anyone else. We can make this happen, but we can't let ourselves withdraw, as naturally inclined as we are to do so.
