What Is College Journalism, Alex?

The Answer:

Where pr0n and journalism studies converge.

Only 30 minutes of the feature-length "Pirates II: Stagnetti's Revenge" were screened last night by a group of students running for election in the school's student government, but it was coupled with a panel discussion on freedom of speech, featuring an ACLU representative and some campus college professors.

This is giving me a headache

I just want to make sure I'm understanding this correctly...

So the Fed is taking my tax money - money that, if I don't have the cash in hand to pony up on April 15, I will be charged a 7% interest rate to finance payments through the Feds.

They're taking my tax money - money that I could be using to grow our business, money that I could be spending in our community, money I could be using to pay down debt and make my family more financially secure, money I could be using to enrich our children's lives - and giving it to banks.  Banks that are going use my own money give me a loan at an interest rate probably within a point or two, one way or another, of seven percent.

If I were a dude on the street, and Guido was going to beat me up if I didn't pay protection money, and I had to take a loan from Guido's brother, Joey the loan shark, to pay the protection money, well, I'd think things were kind of screwed up.

So what am I missing here?  This isn't really what our financial system has come to, is it?

Just because you are you

This is not particularly coherent (let's pretend that is a change from my other posts) but things have been bothering me and thus I shall vent all over y'all.

I've been pondering the entitlement mentality lately.  This time my thoughts as such were spurred by the push to forgive student loan debt.  Now, I oppose this on a philosophical basis but were it to pass, I would most certainly take it.  I have massive, massive student loan debt and, frankly, I'll never be out from under it.  However, this debt is my responsibility for my decisions and my choices and the consequences are mine.  I don't like them but I will live with them.  However, it seems that there are many who believe that they should be free to go to an Ivy League school, rack up $150k in debt, then take a job in Midtown Manhattan as a social worker and still be perfectly free to live in a nice loft and buy Prada and go out every night.  The idea of sacrifice and struggle and making choices is simply laughable.  It's as if all of life is to have a guarantee and no hard choices should ever need to be made.

I am greatly concerned by the seeming acceptance of the concept that one is entitled to an easy life just because.  I saw it once referred to as the baby proofing of life and I think that sums it up.  No hard edges.  No steep falls.  No dangers at all.  All of life is now to be a smooth trajectory with guard rails and cushy pillows and no consequences whatsoever.

I loathe this.  If I am not responsible for my failures, then I cannot take credit for my success.  Life hurts.  Sometimes life hurts an enormous amount.  But life is also capable of granting amazing highs.  This urge to level everything out, to become Prozac Nation indeed, is greatly worrisome.  I don't understand how it's easier to let someone else rule your life.  Sure, there are times when that's great but not as a constant thing.

Growing up is understanding that you have to turn your back on some things in order to have others.  Does that suck?  Oh hell yes.  Is that fair?  Nope.  But that's how life is.  Attempting to think otherwise will only end in tragedy.  Yet it seems that our politics are now becoming the Cult of the Perpetual Teenager.  And as much as I wouldn't mind having my 18 yo body back, I do mind being treated like a teenager now.  I don't need the government telling me what to eat, when to sleep, how fast to drive, what to smoke or not smoke or any of the myriad of things that now are Federal cases.

I just want to be left alone to struggle through the best I can.  I hate that this is becoming too much to ask.

Now, as a reward for the tl;dr  IDF babes.

Inevitable: Big cuts to the missile defense program

I think we all knew this was coming, but it doesn't make it suck any less.  Frivolous pork and political favors?  Fuck Yeah!  Health care for wounded vets and missile defense?  Fuck No!  Glad to see the Democrats have their priorities in order.  We're going to have one hell of a mess to clean up over the next few elections.

What a shock!

So, apparently, it turns out Markos Whatshisface and his buddies are a bunch of assholes eager to make jokes about a terrible tragedy because they think they can score political points as a result.

Who knew?

Was there life before Obama?

The only way this could be any more pathetic is if the person who mailed in this postcard was using a Head O State* while YouTubing.

Pathetic Loser

I'm trying to guess what the postcard submitter did to relieve depression prior to Obama's winning the presidency, and coming up blank. Any ideas?

*Head O State - just another way for Obama to fuck America. Head O State's Twitter feed revealed this gem

Yet another idea so stupid only an intellectual would believe it

Passive drinking.

Passive drinking?  Seriously?  Seriously?  Honestly, this is a concept so fucking stupid I expect that laws will be passed about it within the week.

I wish the nanny staters would be honest and admit that what they really want to do is attempt to legislate away any "bad" behavior at all.

Shocka! The DNC Fudging With Numbers!

This time, it's over a petition.

Democrats descended on Capitol Hill Wednesday to deliver hundreds of thousands of pledges from across the country in support of President Obama's budget. The signatures were harvested during a massive effort to tap the president's huge e-mail list and capitalize on a 50-state, door-to-door campaign.

The official DNC release read, "Supporters of President Obama's budget to hand deliver 642,000 pledges...." CNN and the Huffington Post reported the DNC's claim. But the truth is somewhat more complicated.

The president's e-mail list of 13-million resulted in just 114,000 individual pledges — a response rate of less than 1 percent. Party workers secured another 100,000 signatures by hitting the streets. The DNC arrived at its 642,000 figure by making three photocopies of each petition so that every signer's senators and representative could get one.

DNC spokesperson Natalie Wyeth responded: "This effort was designed to give our supporters the tools to influence their elected officials. Of course we delivered a pledge to each of their members of Congress — 642,000 pledges. That's what we said we were delivering and that's what we did."

When asked about the impression in the DNC press release that there were 642,000 unique pledges, she offered no response.

man I want to punch a hippie

Oh this article makes me want to fetch the stompy boots - Tea Is The New Coffee

Look.  I am a tea snob.  I drink tea in the office since I refuse to drink the swill they call coffee (plus my doctor is a wee tad concerned that my heart will actually explode from the caffeine).  I currently have *counts* nine different kinds of bagged and loose tea here.  I have probably over 30 different kinds at home.

But here's the thing.  I don't think it's some huge social statement.  I don't drink it to make a point about affordable luxuries and showing off in a minor way.  I drink it because it tastes good and I really like it.  It is soothing to sit there with a perfectly made cuppa.

I actually agree with the whole affordable luxury thing.  I won't actually spend $1,000 on a pair of boots, no matter how desperately I want to.  But I will spend $40 on a few ounces of loose tea from which I can brew several cups.  But, again, I'm not trying to be hip and cool and holier than thou.

This whole personal is political and look how fantastically awesome I am thing really makes me want to go stompy.  It's.  Fucking.  Tea.  Really.  Tea.  That's it.  Get the hell over yourselves.  You're not cooler and hipper and holy hell you didn't discover jack shit.  It's.  Fucking.  Tea.  STFU.

Also get off my lawn.

Kathleen Parker Beclowns Herself (This Is Not A Recording)

Yeesh. So let me get this straight....

Kathleen had a schoolgirl crush on Obama, yet she now loves the daughter of Obama's opponent in the election?

The GOP's identity crisis just got more interesting with the recent media splash of Meghan McCain, eldest daughter of the senator who did not become president.

Young McCain, who began blogging during her father's presidential campaign, recently made waves at The Daily Beast when she picked a fight with conservative media mavens Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham. This is enough sport to make the little dog laugh, to say nothing of the dish and the spoon.

McCain, just 24, is one smart cookie. In a matter of weeks, she has created a brand, presenting herself as a fresh face of her daddy's party and a voice for young conservatives. Strategically speaking, what better way to launch herself than to challenge the reigning diva herself, Miz Coulter?

Madonna, meet Britney.

Somewhere, there's an Allahpundit joke waiting to be written, using Parker's new BFF fixation with McCain's daughter.

Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out

It looks like we might be waving buh-bye to one of the douchebags most responsible for this mess we're in as early as next November:

A Quinnipiac University poll shows that Sen. Chris Dodd's approval rating is sinking like a rock. It's so low, anybody who has expressed an interest in challenging him could win.

The QU poll also found that Dodd, a thirty year veteran of the U.S. Senate from Connecticut, would be beat by former 2nd District Republican Congressman Rob Simmons, 50 percent to 34 percent. Republican State Senator Sam Caligiuri, who is largely unknown outside the city of Waterbury, is ahead 41 percent to 37 percent. Former Ambassador Tom Foley, a Greenwich businessman with virtually no name recognition, also beats Dodd 43 percent to 35 percent.

The poll also found that only 32 percent of respondents found Dodd trustworthy. Gee, now there's a shocker.

I just can't wait for the GOP to find a way to completely bungle this golden opportunity.

David Frum is a twat

The twat is gloating because said twat thinks Tedisco lost NY-20.  The twat thinks that it confirms his argument that we need to become like the Tories in the UK.  The twat is ignoring the fact that the Tedisco campaign was poorly run, and of course the fact that he hasn't lost yet, and there are absentees to be counted, but of course that doesn't fit into the twat's agenda.

And yes, you stupid twat, we are worried about this, but I'd rather let the left turn the nation into a Marxist hellhole all at once than let your New Tories do it slowly and painfully.

Stupid question time

If the election of President Obama was supposed to usher in a new age of world peace and change the global perception of America from a fascist threatening superpower to a country of fluffy bunnies and Skittle-shitting unicorn lovers, why is the national flight threat level still at orange?

Nice To See Phast Eddie rendell Is Spending His Porkulus Money Wisely

Hey DPUD, Alex, and Sockless Joe:

Aren't you proud?

The Patriot-News has learned that the money will be spent to hire clowns, mimes, magicians, street performers and comedians (nothing blue) who will be dispatched to malls, fairs and festivals across the state to boost morale.

The governor's idea is based on history: During World War II performers helped keep Americans' spirits up while they were faced with food and gas rationing.

The governor and his economic team believe if people begin feeling more positive they might begin spending more money, which will boost the economy and hopefully bring about more jobs to the commonwealth.

The merriment will be conducted through a new Headquarters of Economic and Emotive Efforts, or HEEE.

No estimate yet on how many performers will be needed to fan out across Pennsylvania, but clearly some counties will need more cheering up than others.

One of the concerns, however, is that the national shortage of clowns at the moment -- due to the foreclosure of the largest clown school in Florida -- could spell difficulties for hiring the needed numbers.

We would recommend that the clowns could be replaced in a pinch by former Wall Street investors eager to relocate and willing to trade their bonuses for Bozo shoes.

We wholeheartedly agree with the governor's approach. Months into this economic mess, we all need something to make us laugh.
