Another "moderate" Democrat for ignoring the surge
The #1 (domestic) thing I like about Gen. Petraeus' surge strategy in Iraq is how it forces the Blue Dog Democrats to say things that sound like something out of Nancy Pelosi's press shop. Take Rep. Nick Lampson of Texas' 22nd District, for example. Take this quote from a fawning article in the Fort Bend Herald (emphasis mine):
Lampson represents a conservative district...the one that was held by Tom DeLay until the 2006 elections...so there is a chance to win it back. Lampson's opponent this fall is Pete Olson, a Navy veteran who also served as an aide to Sen. Phil Gramm and as Sen. John Cornyn's Chief of Staff.

Much has been said of the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, with al-Qaida and Taliban possibly coming back into power. Lampson said the U.S. needs to “shore up†its efforts to prevent a downfall.Wow. There's some Grade-A nuance for ya. I hope all current and former military personnel in Lampson's district get a chance to read this quote.
The country needs to scale down combat efforts in Iraq and use a combination of ramped-up intelligence resources and targeted use of Special Forces troops to aid the government.
“Whether the surge helped or not, forget all that. We’re caught up in combat activity, where we really need a police kind of action. I think we’re not accomplishing a great deal when we’re perceived as occupiers.â€
